The Power of Teamwork: Overcoming Health, Motherhood, Entrepreneurship Challenges with Tanya Alvarez

Does the struggle of juggling motherhood and entrepreneurship sound familiar to you? Have you been told to simply work harder or figure it out on your own in order to find success in both areas? The stress and burnout from trying to do it all without any support can be overwhelming, leaving you feeling drained and discouraged.

In this episode, our guest is Tanya Alvarez, who at age 25 started a New York ad agency using credit cards and went from zero to 1 million in revenue in the first year. She's overcome a whole lot in her life. She's 45 now, and we chat a good bit about health struggles that she's been through, although perspective is critical with regard to that and how frankly, her sister has much more severe health struggles.

I always wanted to be like, in your 20s, especially from my background, there was a little chip on my shoulder that I wanted to prove, be that entrepreneur, right? But then I was like, wait, what about if I work myself? What's the cost? It's kind of like running, right? I wanted to run in high school to run again to division one, ended up at division three, even though I got full scholarships to division one because of the education. And then I had to think, do I want to be a professional runner? Well, luckily, I didn't, because I would have figured out later on in my life that I wasn't able to full on. But the whole point is, what's the cost that you're willing to do? - Tanya Alvarez

Insights: What I Learned from Interviewing 100+ Guests

Insights: What I Learned from Interviewing 100+ Guests

What I Learned from Interviewing 100 Plus Guests

A reflection on 120 podcast episodes.

    Episode Highlights:
In this first episode of "Insights into Culture and Leadership," I share a powerful story from my experience in Haiti after an earthquake. I draw a contrast between good and bad leadership, exemplified by a compassionate youth leader working with orphans and harsh teachers in a school.

In Haiti, I met a Haitian youth leader who demonstrated exemplary leadership by working with earthquake orphans, fostering healing through music and expression. This contrasts with a negative example in a nearby school of teachers berating, punishing and humiliating students. The youth leader's approach inspired self-expression and confidence in the orphans. The contrasting experiences highlight the influence of leadership on behaviour and actions. I define good leadership as that which brings help, insight, health, and healing to individuals, community, and the environment.

The story serves as a backdrop for my subsequent reflection on the common themes I observed in the 120 interviews I conducted for the Culture and Leadership Connections podcast.

Six Key Insights That Emerge from The Interviews That I’ve Conducted:

    1. Role of Hardship and Adversity: All interviewees, regardless of the type or severity of their challenges, spoke about the transformative role of hardship and adversity in shaping their character.
    2. Transformation from Suffering: Those who thrived, understood the value of transforming suffering, leading to increased empathy and a profound ability to connect with others.
    3. Embracing Community: Almost all interview guests expressed a sense of belonging to a community or society, recognizing the importance of collaboration and shared values. Only three out of the 120 felt like they did not need a community to thrive.
    4. Fluid Identity and Solid Values: Interviewees exhibited a willingness to evolve and adapt their identities while holding onto solid values.
    5. Humility Through Unexpected Challenges: Even those with privilege and talent faced unexpected challenges, fostering humility and a realistic understanding of life's uncertainties.
    6. Influence of Family: Family, whether positive or challenging, played a foundational role in the development of each person interviewed.

I conclude the episode by emphasizing the significance of reflection, transformation, and humility in leadership, whether at home or in the workplace. Considering how these themes have proven formative for you, could reveal some new insights!

CAVA: Ted Xenohristos and Brett Schulman

CAVA: Ted Xenohristos and Brett Schulman

When Ted Xenohristos and two childhood friends opened their first sit-down Greek restaurant in 2006, they had no idea it would eventually grow into CAVA, a sprawling national chain that serves stuffed pita sandwiches and salads. Raised by Greek immigrants, the three founders understood how to make great food, but were rookies at running a restaurant–maxing out their credit cards, and learning the hard way that you should never write dinner orders on sticky-notes. As the restaurant tried to raise its profile by selling its hummus and tzatziki to grocery stores, it continued to lose money. But eventually the founders decided to hire Brett Schulman as their boss. Brett had invaluable experience in the snack food industry, and predicted that CAVA’s Mediterranean cooking would take off among health-conscious diners. He was right. Today, CAVA is a publicly-traded company with over 280 restaurants across the country.

    131. Why does life feel boring?

    131. Why does life feel boring?

We have all had that experience of feeling bored with our everyday life, whereby we look around and our daily experiences have lost some of the colour and excitement. Why is that the case? Psychology can provide some explanations including:

    • A lack of novelty and new experiences
    • Seasonal affective disorder
    • Overstimulation from our phones and social media
    • Social comparison
    • The benefits of a dopamine detox

We discuss all these reasons and more, as well as what we can do to change that! How can we break out of this boredom cycle and feel like our lives and everyday experiences are meaningful by embracing the beauty of an anti-routine, challenging ourselves to try new things once a week, keeping ourselves open to opportunities (even ones that are scary) or even trying a dopamine detox. Listen now for when life feels boring!
