Equity Conversations: Resistance and Resilience with Graig Meyer and Jamie Almanzán

INTRO: Earlier this year, I read The Delicate Handling of Equity Work in Conservative Communities, and was thrilled when the authors agreed to be guests on the podcast. In the two years since I left the superintendency, I have found myself talking with superintendents who have faced (or are facing) this same dilemma. They recognize the importance of the children in their district learning about systems of oppression, but sometimes their communities see any topic of equity as an assault on their "traditions" (or, in one example from their article, they say superintendents are bringing Critical Race Theory to their community when they talk about equity). As you can see, I have really been looking forward to talking with my guests today, the leaders of The Equity Collaborative, Graig Meyer and Jamie Almanzán

In the first part, we talk about their article and in second part, the After-Action Review, I want you to imagine you have been asked to give the beginning of the year kickoff to 1000 teachers who may have been told they’re the obstacle to equitable practices. Not only that, you learn that contract negotiations have not been going well and the teachers have threatened to walk out of the kickoff!

And let me apologize in advance, I clearly forgot to turn on my mic, so I sound as if I am down a well, but Graig and Jamie sound AMAZING – you’ll hear more from them than me!

BIO: Jamie Almanzán is a facilitator, teacher, curriculum developer and leadership coach currently working as an Equity Leadership Coach and the owner of The Equity Collaborative in Oakland, California. Prior to leading The Equity Collaborative, he held the position of Senior Coach at the National Equity Project

Graig Meyer is a social worker, educator, and youth development specialist working as an Equity Leadership Coach and partner in The Equity Collaborative. He has 16 years of experience leading equity work in public schools.

    154. Why does healthy love feel boring? ft. Sarah Yudkin

When we experience healthy love for the first time after years of unsettling, unhealthy, toxic relationships, one of the first reactions we can have is "why does this feel so boring?" Often we confuse safety with a lack of passion, or assume that just because this person doesn't activate our nervous system, we are missing the spark. This is often left over from past relationships where we have confused anxiety with excitement.

In this episode, we bring on Sarah Yudkin, the founder of You Love and You Learn to break down the relationship anxiety that comes with experiencing healthy love for the first time and how to dissect your relationship OCD, the unconscious ways we sabotage relationships and all that comes with it. Awakening to the Beauty of Life

Awakening to the Beauty of Life

“It is a high-stakes engagement to not miss the beauty of life.”

This is the invitation and guidance Jon Kabat-Zinn gifts us in today’s episode.

A mindfulness pioneer, Jon has played a foundational role in bringing meditation to the forefront of our culture; Admirably dedicating six decades to teaching, creating Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and authoring over 15 books.

I’m always inspired when Jon asks — What if life was the meditation? — and was honored to learn the various entry points we can practice it, all of which lead to “the room of the human heart when it knows itself.” We share a wide-ranging conversation exploring everything from cultivating equanimity to letting go of the stories we tell ourselves and discovering our shared wholeness. His practices are invaluable tools to be full participants in that high-stakes engagement.

#387 A Monk's Guide To Happiness, Fearless Living & Thriving in Hard Times with Gelong Thubten

#387 A Monk's Guide To Happiness, Fearless Living & Thriving in Hard Times with Gelong Thubten

What if the most courageous, compassionate thing you could do in life, was to learn how to be with yourself? It’s a powerful, perhaps surprising idea put forward by this week’s guest, the Buddhist monk, meditation teacher and author Gelong Thubten.

Thubten became a monk back in 1993 after suffering from severe physical and mental burnout whilst following his dream of becoming an actor in New York City.

His new book, A Handbook for Hard Times: A Monk’s Guide to Fearless Living, draws on what he’s learned over the past 30 years. Its premise is that we can embrace life’s difficulties as opportunities for personal transformation, using hard times to cultivate resilience, kindness, and happiness.

We begin our conversation talking about distraction and addiction, two states that are very closely linked. When we distract ourselves by scrolling, overeating, or drinking for example, says Thubten, we’re pushing away emotional pain or discomfort – even if we may not realise it. But the discomfort is really in the pushing. If we can learn instead to sit with what’s making us uncomfortable, those emotions start to transform.

So, how exactly are we meant to do this? Thubten explains that one way is through the practice of meditation and learning how to process negative emotions in the moment, rather than only understanding them in retrospect.

The most common misconception is that meditation needs a clear mind. But thoughts are inevitable, and the goal is not to push them away. If we use meditation to sit with our thoughts, rather than escape them, the transformations really start to happen. We become less controlled by negative emotions and start to cultivate positive ones. Meditation can unlock our innate self-compassion and this, in turn, improves our relationship with ourselves and with others.

Thubten insists that you can’t fail at meditation, because it really just means ‘being you’. The more we meditate, the less we run away from hard times and fear, and the more we become our true, contented selves.

Thubten is an excellent communicator and I hope you enjoy this really special episode.

11 Crazy Facts About Laundry, Showering, & Getting the “Little Stuff” Done That Will Make You Laugh (and Prove You’re Doing Better Than You Think)

11 Crazy Facts About Laundry, Showering, & Getting the “Little Stuff” Done That Will Make You Laugh (and Prove You’re Doing Better Than You Think)

In today’s episode, best-selling author and therapist KC Davis answers the question, "How can you be successful in many areas of your life but fall short on getting the laundry, dishes, or grocery shopping done?"

Which begs the question: why are all the "little tasks" so hard?!

Because when it’s time to get them done, they don’t "feel" so little.

KC’s advice, breakthrough ideas, and research will make you realize you’re not the only one who feels like you’re drowning.

And her compassionate, hilarious approach and simple tools will help you take better care of your home and yourself immediately.

    If you’ve ever said:

Why can’t I get it all done?

Why does everyone else do this without a struggle, and I am FAILING?

I should really have my act together….

All the answers you need are in this episode.

And if you (or someone you love) is having a moment where even taking a shower or brushing your teeth feels like climbing Mount Everest, KC Davis is an angel sent from the heavens to lift you up.

This is one of my favorite conversations of all time. It’s so wide-ranging in topics and deeply relatable, laugh-out-loud funny, poignant, and actionable.

Talking to KC is like having an old friend show up at your house with a mug of tea, a mop, and a casserole you can stick in the fridge.

There are so many life-changing realizations that will restore your sanity—and the functionality of your home—that this is only Part One of your time with KC and me.

Today’s episode will change your entire life. You will learn:

    • A shocking approach to laundry and anything else in life that changes everything. (This one is so goooood!)
    • 3 rules for self-care made simple
    • A 5-step tidying method that will improve your life
    • A genius trick for when the dishes or laundry are piled sky-high
    • KC’s "momentum-building trick" that will make your brain work for you
    • Making relaxation your right, not your reward
    • Leveraging self-compassion as a motivational tool
    • KC’s favorite phrase to say when she feels overwhelmed

My mission today is to prove to you that if you don’t have your sh*t together, you aren’t broken. You’re just like the rest of us – you’re human.

Get ready to laugh and learn as I confess the details of what a disaster I am at home, as we go step-by-step with instructions and affirmations for an empowering and gentle journey to a functioning space.

    Xo, Mel

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

“It is time for a new Declaration of Independence. It is time to fling open the doors of every cage and let every bird take flight. Abolition is faithful and patriotic and both our founding document and our Gospel call us to overthrow any system or government that does not live up to the high standard of liberty and justice for all. And while that requires individual commitment by each of us it also requires recognizing that we will only get free if we extend the same agape love to each other that we long for ourselves.  That we will only get free when the caged bird’s song comes from all of our lips.”

Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Independence Sunday, July 2, 2023 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Readings: Frederick Douglass’ speech in Corinthian Hall, Rochester, July 5, 1852, Psalm 145:1–9, President-elect Barack Obama’s speech in Baltimore on January 17, 2008, Matthew 5:43–48.
