Becoming Citizens of the Kindom of God

Our youth are frightened.  They understand that if Nex is not safe, or the bodies of black, indigenous, and youth of color, or the bodies of trans or female youth, then no child’s body is safe.  They have clarity: by our actions, we need to give them hope.

The Beautiful, Outrageous, Uncloseted, Queer Love of Christ

The Beautiful, Outrageous, Uncloseted, Queer Love of Christ

You do not need to be afraid of yourself. You are free to question and explore. You deserve a healthy relationship with your body and you are worthy of the time, space and resources it takes to create that relationship. Pleasure is not a sin. Delight and pleasure are a beautiful part of being alive…. Our bodies are for honoring, not policing. We are queer followers of a queer Christ. And thank God for that.

    The Glory Hour

    The Glory Hour

I'll just remind you that the only way that we will see light in this world is if you bring it. The only way that we will see change in this world is if you speak it. And the only way that people will know that God is still alive and moving in these streets is if you walk in these streets…

    Dear Friend

    Dear Friend

I truly believe … God dreams for us to be a community that is unflinching in our quest for justice. A community that refuses to remain silent in the midst of horrendous evil, knowing that “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil… Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” A community that is as determined as ever not “to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice,” but “to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.” A community that is as determined as ever to speak the truth to the powers that are oppressing and killing the people of God here and around the world in the same way that Gandhi spoke that truth to Hitler. And … a community that always begins those entreaties with the words  “Dear friend.”

Meeting in That Place of Pain

Meeting in That Place of Pain

We are in an extended period of difficult change and deep loss. And it impacts all of us. So let me be the first to say it this morning. I am hurting. It has been a hard seven and a half years here and the past four especially so. I am hurting and I know you are too, I just know it. So instead of trying to pretend we aren’t in pain, can we meet in that place of pain?

    Breathing In and Out

    Breathing In and Out

Epiphany is a revelation of wisdom. Of what to hold onto … and what to release. Of how to travel light, carrying only what we need to be free and releasing now what we now can let go. Breathing in and out.

Now, Gospel tells us they brought three gifts … gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Love is not the easy thing. The only baggage you can bring is all that you can’t leave behind.

Gold, frankincense and myrrh.  That’s what the magi couldn’t leave behind. For Jesus, and for us. Because each one of these gifts holds a question … of what to hold onto and what to release.

    Hopes and Fears

    Hopes and Fears

The love that binds us all together with one another and with God is the child in the manger, is the word of the Prophet Mohammed, praise be unto him, is the great light that still shines on those to whom Isaiah speaks who still live in exile and fear.

The hope of the world is in this room this night … right here, right now. Because tonight we gather at the manger – Jew, Muslim and Christian – believer and struggler – friend and foe – and we say with one voice that the love that is God that binds us together is stronger than the most powerful force that would tear us apart.
