    29. Putting Diversity on the Tech Menu | EatOkra
Limited resources, support, and a lack of digital presence are a few things black-owned restaurants, in particular, struggle with. EatOkra - an community that directly connects consumers with Black-owned restaurants - is here to change that.

Host Rob Grimes is joined by EatOkra Co-Founder Anthony Edwards Jr., and Head of Sales Andre Ferguson. They discuss the inception of EatOkra, including challenges Anthony witnessed his parents facing while operating an events and catering company. Combining an application development background, with a passion for foodservice, Anthony and his co-founder and wife Janique, brought together a team with a wealth of industry experience such as Andre’s who previously worked with UberEATS and Cloud Kitchens.

EatOkra uses technology to empower black food communities through exposure, celebration, and access to developmental resources. They recently celebrated over half a million users and over 9,500 listings.

When it comes to observations about why black restaurants are slower in adopting technology into their restaurants, Anthony notes there is skepticism when it comes to corporate technology. “It’s in the messenger. A lot of companies are sending people that don’t look like them into their communities to sell a product to them.”

If you want to learn more about EatOkra’s mission, the rise of the black restaurant community, and partnership between EatOkra and IFBTA - listen to this episode of Accelerate.

Season 4 Ep. 66: Saying Hello to 2023 w. Mavinga

Season 4 Ep. 66: Saying Hello to 2023 w. Mavinga
    Happy New Year, everyone!

The great people at Adult-ish hoped you had an amazing time ringing in the New Year and to welcome 2023, 'Adult-ish' host, Afiya, is back with a NEW episode.

Take a listen as Afiya is joined by Digital Discovery multi-hyphenate pod host, Mavinga, to discuss how they're really feeling about 2023.

If you're looking to hear "resolutions" and "2023 goals," you won't get that here — especially with the year these two have had. But despite some hesitation regarding what the year has to bring, we hear the duo speak about some of the things they would like to do, seeds they would like to sew, and communities they would like to build in the days ahead. After all, it's probably the adult thing to do.

P.S. there's a bit of it at the end that DEFINITELY speaks directly to the Adult-ish audience, so make sure to listen to how to make this a year we can all live through.

Episode 105: Basic Farewells to Network Television

It's time to say goodbye to Greendale yet again! This time we're saying farewell to its tenure on NBC as we wrap up our season five coverage with "Basic Story" and "Basic Sandwich."

Jenn's joined by returning guests Nick (@nickyahogan) and Jeffrey (@jmunneymalone) who talk about the highs, lows, and mostly middle-of-the-roads of the final two episodes this season. They unpack the Jeff/Britta of it all, Annie getting to be awesome, a weird turn beneath the school, the lack of Shirley, and how they would have felt if this was the series finale.

Thank you all for listening to ur season five coverage! We can't believe that we'll be heading into the last season of Community later this year. Until then, we're going to revisit some episodes of the show we didn't cover initially, do some fun interviews, and return for season three Mythic Quest podcasting this fall!

    Enjoy!

Ep. 17: "Undeterred", an interview with Gabriel Vasquez

Ep. 17: "Undeterred", an interview with Gabriel Vasquez
As a young boy from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Gabriel Vasquez had a very negative experience when his father first introduced him to camping, fishing and enjoying the outdoors on public land in New Mexico. Gabe's father was undeterred. The resoluteness displayed by his dad had a profound impact on Gabe who went on to become an avid outdoorsman and a professional conservationist. Currently Gabe works for HECHO [Hispanics Enjoying Camping, Hunting and the Outdoors]. Prior to that, he worked for the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. In his role with NMWF, Gabe introduced countless youth to the outdoors by providing them with transformative opportunities to connect with nature. Gabe shares one story set in the Gila Wilderness wherein he tricks a group of teens to scale a formidable peak by implying they would obtain a cellular signal from the summit that would allow them to check their social media accounts. By the trip's end, looking at the screens on their phones was far less desirable to them than enjoying meaningful adventures in the wild. Jesse Deubel and Gabriel Vasquez are also joined by NMWF staffers Adrian Angulo and Ray Trejo who both serve on the board of directors for the Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project. Founded by Gabe and headquartered in Las Cruces, New Mexico where he resides, Nuestra Tierra has quickly grown into a powerful conservation organization gaining recognition on the national stage for their incredible work. You'll have to listen through some laughter on this one, but we sure hope you enjoy the listen!
