    Finding Your Voice in Virtual Spaces with Casey Erin Clark

    Finding Your Voice in Virtual Spaces with Casey Erin Clark

    Many of us spend what felt like a lifetime on Zoom meetings, and perhaps you struggled to find your voice in this virtual space. This is completely normal because the rules of engagement are entirely different online than they are in the real world.

    To wrap up our 'best-of' series, we're replaying an episode with guests Casey Erin Clark and Julie Fogh, the Founders of Vital Voice Training, a voice, and communication company that recognizes that your voice is a powerful tool for connection and expression. As trained actors and voice and speech coaches, Casey and Julie understand that real communication happens when your voice is grounded in who you are.

    On this show, after hearing about their business aims, we dive into the disembodiment that many of us are experiencing, and Casey and Julie offer advice on how we might reconnect with our bodies once more. We touch on the importance of communicating and teaching rules of engagement, particularly in a virtual space where they aren’t so obvious. In-person meetings are not perfect either, so accepting these virtual spaces for what they are can help us feel okay in them.

    Our conversation also touches on broadening our understanding of power and confidence in the world that deifies extroversion, Casey and Julie’s functional authenticity definition, and the difficulty that many of us have with being authentic on social media. Our voices are a marker of who we are. It is not about talking the loudest or the most, it is about using your voice in a way that is truest to you.

    Here’s a peek at what else we discuss:

    • What Vital Voice Training does and the impetus to start the company.
    • How the pandemic affected Vital Voice’s business and the meaningful pivot they made
    • Four ways of perceiving the body and the importance of cultivating a connection to our bodies.
    • There is so much room for creativity on Zoom with all the tools available.
    • The difficulty of not being able to easily switch roles when we work from home.
    • Our bodies and spirits are not meant to deal with this level of uncertainty.
    • Balancing the humility of listening and the power of sharing your voice.
    • Why we need to expand our definitions of power and confidence.
    • The difference between feedback that men and women receive in the workplace.
    • Defining functional authenticity and why it is important to have this expanded definition.
    • Why it is so difficult to be authentic on social media where we can curate what we share.
    • You can be authentic and intentional; it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

    Closing Down Your Business with Brigitte Lyons

    Closing Down Your Business with Brigitte Lyons

    In recent months, we've observed several high-profile women opt to shutter their businesses, yet the reasons behind such decisions often (still) remain unexplored.

    On this episode of the And She Spoke podcast, we talk to Brigitte Lyons. She is the Founder of Podcast Ally, a podcast booking agency that she created and grew while traveling around the United States in a van with her husband: #vanlife.

    She recently made the call to close her company and we were eager to have a conversation about this process.

    Join the conversation as we chat with Brigitte about why she started Podcast Ally, how she successfully continued to run it while living a nomadic lifestyle, and the impact COVID-19 had on the business.

    Finally, we explore how she factored her knowledge, ability, and willingness to ride out a potential recession and she gives us an inside peek into the complex deliberation she underwent that finally led to her decision to close down her business.

    Here’s a sneak peek of what we discuss:

    • Building her business (Podcast Ally) to support a nomadic lifestyle: #vanlife.
    • A detailed explanation of running her company from the road, her team's role and how it operates within the company.
    • Her end game: the initial vision for Podcast Ally and what she originally aimed to achieve.
    • The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on her business and decision-making.
    • Her thoughts on what sparked the growth of her business in July of 2020.
    • Riding out a recession: knowledge, ability, and willingness.
    • She underlines the complex deliberations that ultimately led her to close the business.
    • What it was like making the decision and breaking the news to her team.
    • The benefits of open dialogue with her team addressing the potential recession.
    • Life looked after closing down her company.
    • The way Brigitte conceptualizes the role of herself as a leader.

    S1E22: Maria Josenhans

    S1E22: Maria Josenhans
    Maria Josenhans is a landscape artist working both outdoors and in her studio. An artist for nearly four decades, Maria's work plays back and forth between representational and abstract as she allows each painting to find its own unique path. Maria was born in New Jersey, one of two daughters to parents James and Janet. Her mother was a librarian, and her father an engineer and keen photographer. Maria had an early introduction to the art of photography in her father’s dark room and developed an interest that shaped the early part of her career. As a child her mother introduced her to Scottish Highland dancing, which still today is a passion that she shares through teaching and adjudicating. Her talent for painting was discovered in High School where her teacher Mrs Erich would prove influential in guiding Maria into a career as an artist. From 1982-86 she studied at the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts), in Philadelphia, PA and graduated with a BFA in Illustration with Honors. In 1994, Maria studied Large Format Black & White Photography with Paul Caponigro. Her early career in photography and illustration was spent in New York before she moved to New England. Once she met her Canadian husband her path changed course and she turned exclusively to painting. In 2000, they moved to the west coast of Canada where Maria has enjoyed a climate that allows for year round plein air painting. She has always been a nature lover, and she is also a student of Zen Buddism. Maria currently lives in Burnaby near Vancouver with her husband Marcel and their new dog Basil.

    S1E10: Maria Martinez-Canas

    S1E10: Maria Martinez-Canas
    Cuban-born photo-based artist, María Martínez-Cañas, first came to the US at the tender age of three months with her parents, and four years later, in 1964, they relocated to Puerto Rico. Maria recalls her earliest fascination for photography as an eight year old when she started working with a Polaroid Swinger camera that her parents gave her. Her mother also gave her an old Twin-Lens Rolleiflex that she brought out of Cuba, which Maria still has today. It wasn’t long before she asked her parents for a darkroom in the house, and thus began her passion for the process of creating images and processing film. Maria has been called a precocious photographer with an insatiable appetite to explore the art of photography and it wasn’t long before her talent became apparent when she had her first exhibition in 1977 at the age of seventeen. Between 1978 and 1982 she attended the Philadelphia College of Art, where she studied with the likes of Joan Redmond, Ron Walker, Eileen Berger, and Arno Rafael Minkkinen. In 1985, Maria received a Fulbright Hays Grant, which enabled her to travel to Spain to study and where she culled archival sources, such as historical maps and documents, which inspired her to create negatives based on Cuban maps. She returned to the United States in 1986 where she settled in Miami. Two important series from the 1990s—Totems and Quince Sellos Cubanos (Fifteen Cuban Stamps)—epitomize her interest in a photomontage aesthetic and use of imagery drawn from her Caribbean childhood. Maria is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Photography Fellowship (2016), a National Endowment for the Arts grant (1988) and a Civitella Ranieri Foundation fellowship (2014) in Umbertide, Italy. Her photographs are in many private and public collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; American Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; and the Museum of Modern Art and International Center of Photography in New York. She is currently working on a project that involves the work of early 20th century German photographer August Sander. When she is not in her studio, Maria enjoys deep sea diving for which she is a certified diver, and watching her favorite basketball team, the Miami Heat. She says: “I think that visually, when you look at a work of art, be it sculpture, be it painting, be it photograph, whatever it is, you as a person, you’re bringing yourself, who you are, what we call the baggage, you bring your iconography, you bring your identity, you bring your experiences as a person … with your eyes you’re looking at an art work but with your head and with your heart; two very different things, the brain and the heart, but when they are communicating with each other, it’s a very interesting dialogue. You don’t have to know about art, you just have to relate to it.”

    Pivot or Pause? The Choice Can Change Everything

    Pivot or Pause? The Choice Can Change Everything
    I am the Pivot queen. Not always because I wanted to be. In business you have to know when to assess a situation, learn from past experiences, and propel yourself into the future. What used to take me years to do and learn, became a matter of survival in the instant moments I had to just make a decision and JUMP.

    On this episode, I kind of just jumped into this story in all honesty and at the same time, as I tell it back I realized how many times I truly did have to push through the chaos and make it out on the other side with what was maybe not exactly beauty...sometimes it was just a hot mess still trying to get through.

    My story and journey as an entrepreneur has come with trials on trials. Much of which came with my multiple degrees I have earned from the school of Hard Knocks. One day I may go back and become a professor there. Lord knows I have earned my PHD.

    I am going to take a break from interviewing other women so I can just get on the mic and share some things.. Some in real time, some in stories of the past.. But, I think it is time.. I have ALOT to say and at first I didn't think I could fill 45 min. But, now?... As I am repeatedly in this chaotic cycle... I think I need to get some things off my chest so, I can step into the next PIVOT I am currently contemplating.

    Can't wait to have it unfold through these episodes.

    Creating a Post-Corporate Life with Denis Wuestman

    #179  Today’s episode is about being emotionally ready for the next phase of life.  It’s about being mindful as you create this new life as a means of self-expression.  And it’s about being intentional with your practices to stay well in mind, body and spirit.

    I’m joined today by retirement coach, Denis Wuestman, who shares his personal midlife transition storywhen he left a long-time corporate career to create a portfolio of activities that keep him learning, engaging and helping those he serves.

    Here’s what we cover:

    • The impact of post-corporate identity loss;
    • The importance of retiring “to” something;
    • How to consider the non-financial elements of retirement; and
    • How to stay well and engaged in life as you age.

    While we speak quite a bit about retirement, the concepts Denis shares can be helpful to anyone who is navigating a significant life change.

    Lastly, Denis has generously offered the first five listeners of this podcast a free retirement assessment, which is a mini-program that includes a review of key areas that are associated with a successful retirement transition and a 90-minute session with Denis to discuss your results.  It’s a $200 value and no further obligation is required.  Email him for availability (email address below).

    163: Providing At-Risk Kids With Positive Alternatives to Gangs, Drugs, Truancy, Violence, and Incarceration

    Diane Latiker, founder of Kids Off The Block, joins The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast this week to talk about her inspiring story and her incredible work to help inner city kids. Kids Off The Block started in 2003, when Diane simply opened her home to youth in her community to help them steer away from the negative influences they saw daily. Kids Off The Block works with at-risk low income youth and young adults, between the ages of 12-24 years old, and provides them with positive alternatives to gangs, drugs, truancy, violence and incarceration. Kids Off The Block provides homework help, mentoring, tutoring, activities, and a "safe place" to hangout. Kids Off The Block also provides food and other resources for kids too. The density and variety of programming invites these young people to come “off the streets” and become engaged in events that are conducted in a safe and caring environment.

    In this episode, you’ll hear:

    • Diane’s life story;
    • How she opened her home to her daughter’s friends and how that led to Kids Off The Block;
    • About the incredible work of Kids Off The Block;
    • Stories about the kids that Kids Off The Block works with and the difficulties they are facing;

    • And so much more.
