How to Gamify Your Emails | Ep. 339

How to Gamify Your Emails | Ep. 339

In this episode, I dive into boosting productivity through gamification, turning tasks into games by keeping score.

Ever notice how tracking progress changes the game? It's the secret to stellar results.

    Specifically, I discuss gamifying emails.

One way is setting a timer, racing to clear as many emails as possible. Another is aiming for inbox zero within a time frame.

But here's the twist: reward yourself upon success.

For me, the thrill lies in accumulating emails and tackling them all at once…it’s engaging and makes the game exciting.

    The bottom line?

Get creative, turn tasks into games, and watch productivity soar.

Closing Down Your Business with Brigitte Lyons

Closing Down Your Business with Brigitte Lyons

In recent months, we've observed several high-profile women opt to shutter their businesses, yet the reasons behind such decisions often (still) remain unexplored.

On this episode of the And She Spoke podcast, we talk to Brigitte Lyons. She is the Founder of Podcast Ally, a podcast booking agency that she created and grew while traveling around the United States in a van with her husband: #vanlife.

She recently made the call to close her company and we were eager to have a conversation about this process.

Join the conversation as we chat with Brigitte about why she started Podcast Ally, how she successfully continued to run it while living a nomadic lifestyle, and the impact COVID-19 had on the business.

Finally, we explore how she factored her knowledge, ability, and willingness to ride out a potential recession and she gives us an inside peek into the complex deliberation she underwent that finally led to her decision to close down her business.

Here’s a sneak peek of what we discuss:

    • Building her business (Podcast Ally) to support a nomadic lifestyle: #vanlife.
    • A detailed explanation of running her company from the road, her team's role and how it operates within the company.
    • Her end game: the initial vision for Podcast Ally and what she originally aimed to achieve.
    • The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on her business and decision-making.
    • Her thoughts on what sparked the growth of her business in July of 2020.
    • Riding out a recession: knowledge, ability, and willingness.
    • She underlines the complex deliberations that ultimately led her to close the business.
    • What it was like making the decision and breaking the news to her team.
    • The benefits of open dialogue with her team addressing the potential recession.
    • Life looked after closing down her company.
    • The way Brigitte conceptualizes the role of herself as a leader.

This is the Most Important Part of any Business | Ep. 246

This is the Most Important Part of any Business | Ep. 246

Today, let's dive into the crucial components of a thriving business. Picture it as a three-legged stool: marketing, operations, and finance.

Each leg is vital, but the question remains: which one takes the lead?

I was pondering this as I stumbled upon an intriguing tweet from Nick Huber, a fellow entrepreneur.

He emphasizes the immense value of distribution, leveraging his massive following for strategic partnerships.

This sparks a hot debate: is distribution king, or does product and operations rule the roost?

In truth, it's not a one-size-fits-all answer. Different goals dictate different priorities.

Distribution accelerates quick cash, while product and operations sustain recurring revenue.

Looking for that grand exit? Mastering operations might be your ticket.

Having worn different hats, I can say every seat has its perks.

The key is recognizing the lens through which you view the business. Negotiations get easier when you understand each leg's worth.

You Are Not An Exception | Ep. 149

You Are Not An Exception | Ep. 149

Recently, I made a poll asking: Would you rather have a million dollars today or the skills of a billionaire in five years?

It's a loaded question, and to me, the answer is obvious…you have to go for the skills. Let me tell you why.

Money is never the solution to all our problems. It can depreciate, be stolen, and even become devalued over time.

On the other hand, having the skills, knowledge, resources, and ability to make money will never leave you wanting.

However, I was surprised to find that 30% of my audience chose the million dollars. Many argued that it could improve the quality of their lives, help them acquire skills and invest for retirement.

While these things may be true, in my experience, things that are given without having been earned tend to leave us easily.

Think about the lottery. Reports suggest that 70% of people who win the lottery will go bankrupt within only a few short years. That's a massive majority of people.

My question is…what makes you think you are the exception?

If we don't yet have the skills or the ability to make a million dollars, chances are….we won't know how to use it properly if it's just handed to us.

Now, I'm not saying that everyone who chooses the million dollars will lose it. There's a chance that some of my listeners are the 30% who can make it work.

But the point is, you have to be honest with yourself and know where you stand.

Ultimately, my message is clear: choose the skills, and you'll never want for money in your life.

You're Not Wrong...But You Are An Asshole | Ep. 134

Today I'm gonna talk about something that really grinds my gears…the difference between giving constructive criticism and being a total jerk.

So…let me tell you about this comment I received that was totally unnecessarily abrasive. It made me realize that there's a way to give feedback without being rude. You know what I mean?

It's important to be cool to each other and enter into constructive discourse, instead of being mean and tearing people down.

Cancel culture and woke culture? They aren’t conducive to intelligent discourse. In fact…they silence people from engaging in conversation.

So, my message to all of you listeners out there is this - be self-aware and understand how you're perceived by others, so you can make the most out of your interactions with people.

Let's all try to bring out the best in each other, shall we?

    Quest for Connection

    Quest for Connection

As a creative, it can be easy to lose yourself down a rabbit hole.

It’s something that I say from experience. Over the years, I’ve realised how easy it is to slip further and further down until you lose connection with what’s around you before you even realise it’s happening.

The lesson I’ve learned is that connection is so, so powerful - both with other people and with ourselves. Connection grounds us, opens us, gives us intention, and helps us to share and receive.

In this quest for connection, I have built routines, habits, and flow into the space where I live and work. Today, I’d like to share this journey to show you how to build a home that connects you to yourself, your daily life, and those that matter the most.

In this episode, let’s explore how even the smallest of things can have the most beautiful impact - whether that’s the habits that help us connect with our day, or the design of a home that allows conversation and connection to flow.

When you strengthen these bonds with yourself and others, you can show up in life as the best, most authentic version of yourself, and the design of your home can support you - a home that reminds you of who you are and who you desire to be.

I’d love to know what resonates with you from today's episode 🖤 Reach out to me over on Instagram @emilynair_design and say hi.
