Thick Desires, Political Atheism, and Living an Anti-Mimetic Life

Thick Desires, Political Atheism, and Living an Anti-Mimetic Life

The last time we had entrepreneur, professor, and author Luke Burgis on the show, he discussed the concept of mimetic desire, which says that we want the things we want because other people want them. Since that time, Luke has continued to explore the idea of mimesis, and how to resist its negative consequences, in his Substack: Anti-Mimetic. Today on the show, Luke and I dig into these ideas and discuss ways we can step outside the tempo, cadences, and priorities that the world would foist upon us and establish our own rhythms for our lives. Luke unpacks what it means to have “thick desires” and become a “political atheist” and how these concepts can help you live a more anti-mimetic life.

    mortality

    mortality
today's episode might get a little dark, okay? but we're going to get through it together. today we're talking about mortality. because me, you, everyone you know...we're all going to die at some point. i feel like when i was little, i knew i would die someday, but my perspective was kind of one dimensional and kind of optimistic. i felt like i had so much time. like, the narrative when i was a child was, 'ugh, you have so much time!' i just never really thought about my own mortality. but i think that part of maturing into adulthood is coming to terms with the fact that we're going to die and the people we love are going to die and it's fucking real. i just fully went through this realization recently and it has rocked my world. so today, we're going to talk about coming to terms with our mortality and how to process it in a healthy way. E521 Ask Nick - Flirting with a Questionable Character

E521 Ask Nick - Flirting with a Questionable Character

Welcome back to another episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! We want to wish you a very Happy New Year and say thank you for watching! On this show, we bring on our callers to give advice about the world of dating. Before getting to our callers, we dive into talking about being pickier on dating apps and testing the waters with a Facetime date. We then bring on our first caller, who after reconnecting with a past girlfriend, finds out that she’s already dating someone. Even after seeing red flags everywhere, knowing that she’s being suspicious, he still continues talking to her, wondering at this point if he should cut things off or not ask too many questions. Our next caller is wondering whether she should have her mom, who she is closest to, walk her down the aisle instead of her dad. Knowing that her dad can take things personally, she worries that she may be ending a relationship by going with her mom. Our last caller is wondering what to do after she finds old friends coming out of the woodwork after getting engaged. Now, our caller wonders how to deal with a friendship that’s changed and, while important, is no longer a priority.

“Spoiler alert: I think about you a lot.”
