EP 130 - Natalie Heckert, Be Willing to Do It Afraid

We often assume that people who are doing the things we fear are not afraid. Chances are they are just as scared as we are and are just feeling the fear and doing it anyway. If you wait until you are in the absence of fear, you will probably never strike.

Natalie Heckert has been the  CEO of NATS (Nutrition & Aerobic Training Service) for 18 years, a Mrs. Minnesota finalist, a contestant on the Price is Right, auditioned for Oprah’s “Next Big Invention”, and worked with Tracey Yukich while she was on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser”.

Natalie has invented a variety of fitness products and has starred in numerous exercise videos. She designed, helped develop and implement a state-of-the-art wellness center for Tastefully Simple, an Inc. 500 organization. She also originated and helped develop a two-year Health & Fitness Specialist Degree program in partnership with the Alexandria Community & Technical College and adjunct instructor.

    626. Michele Blackburn, Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor

    626. Michele Blackburn, Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor

"It never really crossed my mind to feel limited. It never really crossed my mind to be like, 'What can’t I do now?' I always focused on, 'What can I do under different circumstances?' It never crossed my mind to focus on couldn’t."

If the name Michele Blackburn sounds familiar, that may be because you've heard it mentioned here on the Ali on the Run Show before — just about one year ago, in fact. Last year, Peloton instructor Jess Sims completed the Boston Marathon, running with an invitational entry from, you guessed it: Michele Blackburn. In 2013, Michele was at the Boston Marathon finish line cheering for her best friend and roommate. She was standing in front of Marathon Sports on Boylston Street when the two bombs detonated, and almost lost both legs as a result. Ultimately, her surgical team was able to save her legs and feet, but she has dealt with extensive surgeries (including skin grafting) and complications (including, more recently, lymphedema) since then.

For years, Michele avoided the Boston Marathon and the finish line. Last year, she returned to Boylston Street for the first time since 2013, to cheer Jess into the finish. This year, 10 years after that tragic day in Boston, Michele will return again: this time, as a marathoner. In this conversation, Michele talks about her decision to run this year's race, and to do it while raising money for the Milford Regional Healthcare System — the hospital that rehabbed her after dealing with lymphedema as a result of the bombings. Michele lives in Uxbridge, MA, with her husband and their two kids, ages 4 and 6.

    • Michele talks about being at the Boston Marathon finish line in 2013 (6:10)
    • On dealing with survivor’s guilt (24:40)
    • How the 2013 bombings affected Michele’s relationship with the marathon and the city of Boston (28:30)
    • All about Jim (30:15)
    • How Michele got connected with Jess Sims, and what the 2022 Boston Marathon experience was like (39:25)
    • Why Michele resists the “runner” title, and how she went from non-runner to soon-to-be marathoner (51:40)
    • The why: Why Michele is running the 2023 Boston Marathon (1:00:55)
    • How Michele fits running and marathon training into her life (1:09:30)
    • On finding closure since 2013 (1:14:35)

    607. Run Your Way with Emily Sisson

"I never think that in a race. I never think, 'I’ve got this.' For better or for worse, I don’t ever feel like something’s done until it’s done."

She's done it again! Earlier this month, Emily Sisson broke her own American record in the half marathon, running 1:06:52 at the Houston Half Marathon. She became the first U.S. woman to run under 67 minutes in the half marathon on a record-eligible course, and Emily now owns four out of six of the fastest half marathon times run by an American woman. (She is also the American record holder in the marathon!) In this conversation, Emily talks about the mental side of staying so strong during training and on race day. She shares how she avoids the comparison trap, and how she stays focused on what she can do vs. what her competition is capable of. Plus, what it was like racing alongside longtime training partner Molly Huddle, the secret to that finishing kick, and what the finish line media frenzy is really like.

    600. The 2023 State of the Ali on the Run Show

    600. The 2023 State of the Ali on the Run Show

"I remember telling my friend that my goal in life is to be able to make everyone happy, and to be everything that everyone needs. And he was like, 'That sounds exhausting and impossible.' And I was like, 'Watch me! I can do it! I will bring joy to the masses!' And now, a year later, I’m like, 'What was I thinking? That DOES sound exhausting!'"

Happy New Year! I kick off the start of every year here on the Ali on the Run Show with my annual review, of sorts. I call it the State of the Ali on the Run Show. It gives me a chance to reflect on the previous year, and set goals and intentions for the one ahead.

By the numbers: In 2022, I released 135 episodes of the Ali on the Run Show, plus an additional eight episodes on Patreon, with 114 different guests. I hosted nine live shows — eight in person, one virtual — and partnered with 15 different brands and companies. In addition to regular episodes, 2022 saw the return of two listener-favorite series (Love on the Run and Ask Ali), and the introduction of three new series (Beyond the Run, Friendship Fest, and 26 Questions). The show saw 6.3 million downloads in 195 countries, and this week, the Ali on the Run Show surpassed 17 million lifetime downloads.

Thank you for being here to help me celebrate the past, present, and future of the Ali on the Run Show. I promise to keep learning, growing, and showing up for myself, for this business, for the running community, and for all of you.
