'Gatherer-Shepherd-Explorer': Church Planting Revolution with Tony Webb

'Gatherer-Shepherd-Explorer': Church Planting Revolution with Tony Webb

Embarking on a transformative mission can redefine not only our own paths but the lives of countless others. That's precisely what Tony Webb of Vision USA Church Planting has done, transitioning from leading established congregations to pioneering a church-planting movement that's igniting an American Reformation. Our dialogue with Tony uncovers the seismic shifts he navigated and delves into the powerful Gatherer-Shepherd-Explorer (GSE) model—crucial tactics for church growth that defy traditional dependence on numbers and finances.

Tony's journey from pastoral challenges in Gettysburg to the establishment of thriving daughter churches paints an evocative picture of ministry adaptation and resilience. Our episode peels back the layers on the church's evolution from a dominant societal force to its current secular interface, examining how the GSE model, rooted in scripture, can be a beacon of hope and innovation. We also dissect leadership structures within the church, contrasting the conventional with organic, Jesus-modeled methods that cultivate community-driven growth, emphasizing the balance between order and the kind of constructive chaos that fosters multiplication.

Closing our compelling conversation, the vision for the 'Church-a-Day' in 2024 shines through, highlighting the unyielding power of unity and the relentless pursuit of spreading Jesus' teachings. This journey through Vision USA's transformative approach offers anecdotes of faith-driven individuals reaching out and reshaping communities. Listeners are invited to become part of this spirited movement, harnessing the potential within to impact the world around us with love, gathering, and the message of Christ.

Facing the Crucible: Dr. Gary Yee's Lesson of Adversity and Healing

Facing the Crucible: Dr. Gary Yee's Lesson of Adversity and Healing

INTRO: My guest this week holds a special place in my professional life. I met him during his first campaign for the school board in Oakland, CA. In the second part of the show, my guest, Dr. Gary Yee, describes what has got to be one of the most difficult experiences of any superintendent – the vandalizing of his home, navigating a hunger strike of two teachers, and community members occupying a school, all in response to proposed school closures.

    Other Topics Discussed:

    • Superintendent Tenures
    • Community Engagement
    • Superintendent/Board Relations
    • Dr. Marcus Foster
    • Hunger Strike
    •  Hartford, Connecticut Case Study

I'm Peter Stiepleman and this is An Imperfect Leader.

BIO: Dr. Gary Yee is a special guest because his life and work as a learner and a leader have taken place all in one spot, the Bay Area. Born to Chinese working-class immigrant parents, Gary attended Oakland’s public schools. He graduated from UC Berkeley, joined the US Air Force (as 2nd LT) and returned to Oakland in 1972 to be a teacher and then a principal. He completed his doctorate at Stanford University and began a career as a professor and then Dean to the Vice Chancellor at Peralta Community College.

Gary’s service to the Oakland Public Schools extended beyond the classroom and the building. In 2002, he was elected as a member of the school board, left the board in 2013, but was appointed to become the Interim Superintendent, for a year, because the superintendent left, and was subsequently re-elected to the Board in 2018, and served there until 2023. Gary worked with 9 superintendents during his 20 years of board service.

MANN+HUMMEL's Kurk Wilks: How Product Innovation Fuels Trust & Reliability

MANN+HUMMEL's Kurk Wilks: How Product Innovation Fuels Trust & Reliability
In its 81 years in business, MANN+HUMMEL has prided itself on being family-owned, remaining steadfast to its mission: separating the useful from the harmful with its filtration products. Yet, over the years, its products have evolved as the company has innovated to meet the demands of its customers. About 25 years ago, the innovation and heritage of MANN+HUMMEL attracted its current president and CEO to the company and he hasn't looked back.

Kurk Wilks joined the company in 1998 on the OE side of the business as a senior account manager. Then, he transitioned into sales and took on a global role managing the General Motors account. Over the years, he has held director roles in the areas of sales, engineering and operations on local, regional and global levels. Finally in December 2018, he was named president and general manager of the company's OE business.

"Then, in 2020 I was asked by our chairman to become the CEO. So it's unique. I'm the first American CEO of this German, family-owned business," he explained. "But I think with my 25 years of experience, the deep respect I have for our heritage of what it means to be family-owned and be technology driven, I'm able to take those assets with our people, our most important asset, and make something different for our customers to experience."

Today, MANN+HUMMEL calls itself the leader in filtration, as it continues to invest in R&D, engineering, digitalization and advanced technology.

"We use analytics tools, AI and other processes now to really bolt on and streamline how we run the business," he said. "But in the end, for me it's about reliability and trust that when customers use our product, it'll make their asset perform as desired and as needed." In this episode of AMN Drivetime, presented by AISIN, Wilks delves into:
    • His first roles in the automotive aftermarket and what attracted him to MANN+HUMMEL (0:51)
    • His career trajectory at the company (2:30)
    • Experiences that have shaped his view on the business (4:18)
    • How MANN+HUMMEL has benefitted from its expanded distribution strategy after opening a distribution center on the West Coast (8:16)
    • The ways the company is innovating in filtration through digital solutions and the importance of its digital hubs (10:12)
    • Additional opportunities for the company's growth (14:12)
    • What he's seeing as the state of the automotive aftermarket with his role as vice chairman of MEMA (15:01)
    • The Lightening Round ⚡

Exploring Bonhoeffer's Legacy: A Heart-to-Heart with Dr. Adam Clark

Welcome Reverend Dr. Adam Clark. He's an outreach pastor at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Mishawaka, Indiana, with a keen passion for Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "The Cost of Discipleship." Together, we navigate the tough terrain of parenting, grace, discipleship, and the allure of Bonhoeffer's call to truth.

As the conversation unfolds, we probe the relationship between natural law and Christ, confronting the pitfalls of a deistic, moralistic, therapeutic mindset prevalent in the American church. We're unafraid to delve into controversial topics such as gender confusion, highlighting the urgency for the church to champion family values. We also equip you with strategies to tackle difficult conversations within the church, underlining the significance of grace, love, and the necessity of law to address unrepentant sin.

In the final stretch of our enlightening tête-à-tête, we underscore the crucial need for unity within the church. We investigate the potential of a common mind, aiding each other in overcoming blind spots. We also venture into the realm of relational health within the Lutheran Church, shining a spotlight on the positive ripples of generosity in our communities and the world. Join us, and you'll leave not just inspired, but more connected with your faith and the broader Christian community.

    34. Coaching Series: What is 'True' Coaching? What we thought it was vs. what it really is!
Are you curious about what coaching is really about? Can you really get results with coaching? Or maybe you’ve noticed that the coaching industry is a little messy right now.

In this podcast, Ashley and Lauren share their experiences with the professional coaching industry and how it's not just about giving answers, but about unpacking and reworking neural pathways by asking the right questions.

    Get ready to hear about:
    • What we thought coaching was before training versus what we know professional coaching to be now.
    • The neuroscience of coaching and how thoughts can influence our actions and frequency.
    • The importance of individualized coaching instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.
    • How Coaching skills can help coaches address each client's unique needs and challenges.
    • Why we believe it’s important to be a certified coach (if you’re calling yourself a coach).
    • Different coaching frameworks and what’s missing from many coach training programs.
The most valuable lesson from this podcast is that coaching is a journey and a lifestyle, rather than a one-time solution, weekend workshop or self-guided study.
