This week’s passage is 1 Kings 8:54-9:9. The favor God would give the people of Israel was conditional on their obedience to the Law of Moses. God’s response is not all roses and flowers, the expectation of obedience is the same. God already knew the failings that would come. God sees the people’s tendency to abandon the LORD unless they remember and turn their heart’s continually towards the LORD. Israel was to represent God to the rest of the world. God was please with the Temple because of the Heart attitude of the people who built it who wanted to honor God and glorify the name of the LORD. Jesus came to clarify the Law to the people so they would see God’s heart clearly because He is Love. Everything in the Old Testament is pointing to Jesus. God made a way for us, and His presence is always with us.

We feel our brokenness the most in the context of our relationships - the great need that each of us has for love.  The Bible continually highlights this void and asks, "Who can fill it?"  Sean and Kate discuss David's first marriage points us to the answer.

This week’s passage is 2 Samuel 24:1-23. The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, but it does not specifically say what Israel was doing to cause God to become angry. The Census recalls Gideon and how God winnowed down the number of fighting men because our faith for victory is to be in the LORD not in the number of men we have. Joab asking David not to take the census. David does not sin again by making the choice himself but leaves the fate of the nation to God. An offering that costs you nothing is not an offering at all, recalls Cain and Abel. When you let go of what you are holding onto, God can bless and multiply it.

This week’s passage is 2 Samuel 11:1-12:12. David was in a good place before he sinned, but he stopped going after God and focused on what he wanted and how to avoid consequences. It’s a loving act of God to show him what he’s done. The awareness of sin brought about conviction. God wants us to put our attention to the reality of our situation. How people lose sight of God when they “are in a good place”. The comfort of the good place can cause us to become stagnant, even lazy when it comes to seeking God. Much like Adam and Eve, David had everything available but took what wasn’t his. Every person is susceptible to their sin nature, God loves us still and has made a way for us. God corrects and disciplines because He loves His children. We can trust that God loves us and that when we mess up, He will set us straight.

This week’s passage is 2 Samuel 5:1-25. For David this is the culmination of God’s promise from when Samuel first anointed David at least 15 years ago.  Verse 12, “David realized”; this was all for the sake of God’s people. Right after David’s moment of awareness, he is faced with more challenges. David’s humility and his dependence on God are displayed as he seeks the Lord for the next move. The symbolism of the second attack by the Philistines. God brings the victory again but does not do it the same way. We are in a world where we will face spiritual opposition again and again. God’s faithfulness to be there for his people time and time again and continue to help through adversity.  David became more and more powerful because of God. We have the same power of the Lord with us because of God’s gift of the Holy Spirit for the growing of God’s kingdom for all people.
