EP - 167 Our Inner Citadel

EP - 167 Our Inner Citadel

This week's episode is a solo show. I just finished Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle Is The Way. This was a great book that seemed to hit at the right time. I was recently laid off from a non-profit where I had just started working. The Obstacle Is The Way is an excellent book about Stoicism.

The part of the book that hit home for me is the concept that each individual needs to have a citadel or a place within themselves that they can go to find inner peace. This citadel is where we can go within ourselves to calm our minds, meditate on the challenges that we are facing, and develop an action plan.

My take on this concept of the citadel is to expand it to a system of three-ring defenses. At the center, you have the keep or citadel that was started as a tower or a structure and placed on top of a hill. As we age and the fortification matures, the owners often add an outer wall. Within this wall, you might find stables, apartments, a blacksmith shop, and the basics that the people would occupy would need if they were attacked. The longer the structure was in place, the more often a second wall or third set of defenses was put into place to provide an even larger protection area for more soldiers, merchants, and important people.

To me, these three rings of defense can be considered the outer wall, your physical well-being, and your surroundings. The outer wall would include whether you are exercising, eating well, having a place to live, or having access to transportation. The inner wall would include your extended family network and personal and professional networks. Finally, your keep or inner citadel is your immediate family, your close friends, positive books, entertainment, positive podcasts, and other media.

When we are in a period of stability and things are going well in our lives, this is the time to repair our walls or defenses and even look to expand them. We should strengthen ourselves physically, build our personal and professional networks, and work on mending or strengthening our closest relationships.

Embodying Ease and Flow: The Key to Transforming Your Life

Embodying Ease and Flow: The Key to Transforming Your Life

In this week's compelling episode of the Dethroning Your Inner Critic podcast, Joanna delves into the prevailing thought system deeply rooted in fear that currently permeates our world. She explores how this fear-based paradigm fosters the misconception that we have failed to acknowledge our true essence as spiritual beings having a human experience, interconnected and united, rather than isolated entities. Joanna sheds light on the societal conditioning that encourages competition over collaboration, scarcity over abundance, and fosters a perception of the world as inherently perilous. These challenges, she argues, reflect an internal imbalance within us that requires our attention.

Tune in to this enlightening episode as Joanna unravels the actions necessary to ground ourselves in a profound understanding of who we are and our immense capabilities. Discover how we can break free from the false notion that constant danger surrounds us, perpetuated by the inner critic's narrative. This narrative convinces us to shield ourselves, preventing the embodiment of love, discouraging vulnerability, and hindering our ability to live in the present. The inner critic leads us to believe that achieving peace, ease, and flow is only possible when we reach our goals, making true joy seem perpetually out of reach.

Here are this week's reflection questions:

    • What steps can we take to facilitate the transformation of our personal lives, aligning them with a more profound truth about our existence?

    • Amidst the necessary changes we face, why do we find it challenging to embody ease and flow, especially in the current circumstances?

    • How can we shift our mindset to recognize that peace, ease, and flow are not exclusive to the attainment of our goals and dreams, but inherent qualities we can cultivate in our daily lives?

Are you ready to find out which Inner Critic Is Ruling Your Mind? Take the FREE Inner Critic Assessment now to Identify the patterns that keep you stuck professionally and personally.
