    Episode Introduction

Hello, everyone, I'm Marco Ciappelli, and this is another exciting episode of the Audio Signal Podcast. If you've been tuning in recently, you know that we've shifted our focus a bit – not just on the stories themselves, but on the storytellers and the diverse mediums they use to express their narratives. And today, we're exploring one of my personal favorites: music.

Music, in all its forms, carries stories that resonate with us, regardless of genre. That's why I'm thrilled to have Drew Ryder Smith with us, a multifaceted songwriter, producer, and artist straight from the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. Drew's journey is as eclectic as his musical influences, and today, he'll share with us the intricacies of songwriting, the fusion of lyrics and melody, and the personal tales that shape his art.

Drew's story starts in Southern middle Tennessee, where his proximity to Nashville and a household filled with diverse musical tastes laid the foundation for his career. From the storytelling prowess of Steve Earle and John Prine to the iconic sounds of Guns N' Roses and the Eagles, Drew's influences are as varied as the genres they represent. This melting pot of musical styles not only shaped his taste but also his approach to songwriting.

As Drew takes us through his journey, we'll delve into the songwriting process – a blend of personal introspection, collaboration, and spontaneous creativity. Drew's transition from solo writing to co-writing in Nashville showcases the evolution of his art form, where ideas and melodies intertwine to create something that resonates with a wide audience.

Throughout our conversation, we'll touch on the challenges and triumphs of a career in music. From navigating publishing deals to the constant quest for creative fulfillment, Drew's experiences mirror the ups and downs of any artist's path. His stories are not just about music; they're about perseverance, adaptation, and the relentless pursuit of passion.

So, join us on this melodic journey as we explore the soul of songwriting with Drew Ryder Smith. Let's discover how stories are woven into songs, creating a tapestry of emotions that define our shared human experience.

Daniel Spreadbury, Part 1: Blending Music, Literature, and Tech into a Fast Paced Career in Notation Software Development

When I first began the podcast,  producer Eddie Ludema and I thought our main goal would be to dig deeply into what makes a great musician, and we had many fascinating interviews in that vein. But as time progressed, we noticed that our interviews were with subjects that didn’t concern themselves directly with performance and practice techniques (Hamido Fujita on A.I. and music, biographer Jan Swafford, Anne Midgette on music criticism), and so we have been expanding our interviews to explore as many different aspects of music as possible. And since I am a composer who uses an engraving system (first Sibelius and now Dorico, which sponsors the podcast), who better to ask about behind the scenes of working on engraving systems than Daniel Spreadbury?

Daniel is product marketing manager for the Dorico Music Notation System (Music and Composition Software for macOS, Windows, and iPad). After graduating from Oxford, he worked for around 12 1/2 years at Sibelius, and when he and his team were let go by Avid, most of them moved to Steinberg and started work on Dorico. In Part 1 of our conversation, Daniel first talks about his beginnings in music and tech, and how that eventually led him to Oxford University, which then eventually led him to Sibelius. We end Part 1 with Daniel talking about his team leaving Avid and their move to Steinberg.

Rethinking AI - Six Months after ChatGPT Changed the World

Rethinking AI - Six Months after ChatGPT Changed the World

Rewind to six months ago, the Music Marketing Manifesto podcast was among the very first music industry podcasts to discuss the release of ChatGPT and the looming AI revolution. Fast forward to the present, AI is not just a buzzword - it's a seismic shift that's ignited a veritable arms race in technology.

AI tools such as ChatGPT 4, Midjourney, Runway's Gen 2, Stable Diffusion, and many others have permeated every corner of our lives, with an especially potent impact on the arts and music industry. Some herald this as a landmark leap in human evolution, while others are sounding the alarm, painting it as a potential hazard to our very existence.

In today's episode, we're taking a reflective journey back through these whirlwind six months. We'll dissect what's transpired, the promises kept, and the ones that merely sputtered out, and we'll discuss what we might be expect going forward.

Moreover, we'll share tangible, real-world AI use cases that can elevate your music career here and now, not in some speculative future. This episode aims to provide a comprehensive catch-up on this crucial topic and perhaps, make you reevaluate your perspective on AI.

John R. Miller and Chloe Edmonstone | Shakedown from Shenandoah

John R. Miller and Chloe Edmonstone | Shakedown from Shenandoah

It seems we’re back in that strange space in time where there are days that can 70 degrees and sunny and beautiful. The birds are singing and the blossoms on trees are beginning to light up the branches like a holy and natural Christmas lights… and then the next day we’re right back into the holds of a winter that every year seems to overstay its welcome. You get a taste of that warmth in your bones, and it’s just enough to whet your appetite for all the things that feel so far away… long walks outside, swimming, afternoons on restaurant patios with friends… and the sun not setting at 4:30 pm.

It's like a brief kind of nostalgia. We know that these things were within our grasp just few months ago but a few months darkness is enough to make it feel like it’s been that much longer. And it’s in this liminal space, it’s nice to reflect on some of the things that reminds of these warmer points in time.

Its in the sunshine and humid air of the summer of 2022 that we sat down with John R. Miller and Chloe Edmonstone. John is a singer-songwriter and West Virginia native, orginally from the Shenandoah Valley. A long-time songsmith, Miller has been running in the Appalachian circuit for a few years before settling in Nashville. His first studio album “Depreciated” was released in July of 2021. Miller’s songwriting style is as natural as flowing river and and is backed by voice that has a crackling warmth to it. It is friendly and picturesque, even in his darker moments across the album. Backed by harmonies and almost familial sounding fiddle playing by Chloe Edmonstone (who was a founding member of the group Locust honey)- the album is all parts familiar and strange.

Public Relations in the Age of Social Media with TikTok Satirist ColorMeLoverly

TikTok has knocked down the wall between public figures and their audiences, putting celebrities and high profile individuals in closer contact than ever before. Inspired by the Harry and Megan interview with Oprah Winfrey, ColorMeLoverly has blown up on TikTok for her comedic and relatable takes on the public relations field and the irony of this new transparent communication.

Public relations TikTok accounts are few and far between when compared to news accounts, something Clara has properly taken advantage of. Her personal know-how of pop culture, the current social media buzz, and awareness of what’s going on in the news culminates into the Tik Toks that she feels are the most relatable.

In this episode, Fred talks with Clara about just how truthful her TikTok videos are and the ever more relevant role of public relations professionals today as they have to transverse the growing importance of social media.
