#276: Grammys recap, Jacob Elordi, Dolly Alderton

#276: Grammys recap, Jacob Elordi, Dolly Alderton

It's a huge week of music, as all 3.5 hours of the Grammys unfolds. Zan has watched it all, Myf's seen the highlights, and we're here to unpack it all for you. Stick around too, cos we're gonna go deep into the amazing Grammys FARSHUN.

The trailer for Amy Winehouse "Back to Black" has been released, and we're in two minds about how we feel about it. Related; the divisive Saltburn is keeping people talking. Not least cos an Australian radio producer and Jacob Elordi have gone head to head on bathwater hunting in Sydney. Meanwhile, did you know you can get a Saltburn bath bomb? Check the ingredients.

And we're banging on about some great stories. Trent Dalton's "Boy Swallows Universe" series on Netflix, and the latest read from Dolly Alderton, "Good Material".

Phil Williams - Sit in the Dining Car with Total Strangers

Phil Williams - Sit in the Dining Car with Total Strangers

I hate scratching my head with "I wonder what s/he meant by that?"
First of all, I'm an inept fill-in-the-unspoken-part practitioner.
Hence my pleasure at getting together with Phil Williams. He wears no barriers and carries no shields. We travel through Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, time in the burn unit, his family and their home, music, and 'the great perhaps,' among other things.
We both dreamed of being engineers, the choo-choo kind, but for very different reasons. Nothing is out of bounds, including his argument why we might consider the advantage if we can sit in the dining car with total strangers.

The Full Serenity Prayer - Reinhold Niebuhr

The Serenity Prayer, By Reinhold Niebuhr

God,  give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
     Courage to change the things
    which should be changed,
    and the Wisdom to distinguish
    the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
    Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

    Amen.

The competition to earning the limelight is long and lengthy battle for both bands and venue managers. In this episode, two members from the band Carmine and a local resident, who once managed Ontario's hottest bar of the 80s, discuss the underground music business from perspective of artists and business men.

Anne Midgette, Part 1: Former Music Critic and Reviewer for the Washington Post & New York Times

Anne Midgette, Part 1: Former Music Critic and Reviewer for the Washington Post & New York Times

Anne Midgette was the music critic for the Washington Post for eleven years, and for seven years before that was a regular contributor to the New York Times. She is the author of two books on music, The King and I, about the relationship between Luciano Pavarotti and his manager, Herbert Breslin, and My Nine Lives, with the pianist Leon Fleisher. She is currently working on a historical novel about Nanette Streicher, the woman who built pianos for Beethoven. Oh, and she has also written some travel books! So who better to ask about what it is like to be a music critic and her life in the arts?

We begin with my asking Anne Midgette about her (at least to me) unique view on the purpose of a music critic. We then talk about what a normal day might look like and about the pressure of writing music reviews with incredibly quick publishing deadlines. Ms. Midgette is well known for her articles having to do with the #MeToo problem in classical music, which we discuss in depth toward the end of this episode.

Carol Jantsch, Part 1: The Inspirational and History Making Orchestral and Solo Tubist

Carol Jantsch, Part 1: The Inspirational and History Making Orchestral and Solo Tubist

Carol Jantsch made history in 2006 when she won the position of principal tuba with the Philadelphia Orchestra, becoming the first woman to win such a position in a major American orchestra. But even more impressive is that she won the chair while she was still in her senior year at the University of Michigan. Noted not only for her orchestral playing, she is a brilliant soloist, and in addition to her solo recitals has appeared with numerous orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra. Her career serves as an inspiration to young women throughout the world.

When she was 14 years old, Carol was third tuba in the band at the Interlocken Arts Academy, but by the age of 18 was in the semi-finals for the principal tuba position of the New York Philharmonic and two years later won the principal position with the Philadelphia Orchestra, a position she still holds. So in Part 1, we discuss in depth her transition from being a student to becoming a professional.
