Why Your Memory Seems Bad (It’s Not Just Age)

Why Your Memory Seems Bad (It’s Not Just Age)

Do you sometimes walk to another room in your house to get something, but then can’t remember what it was you wanted? Do you sometimes forget about an appointment or struggle to remember someone’s name?

You may have chalked these lapses in memory up to getting older. And age can indeed play a role in the diminishing power of memory. But as my guest will tell us, there are other factors at play as well.

Charan Ranganath is a neuroscientist, a psychologist, and the author of Why We Remember: Unlocking Memory’s Power to Hold on to What Matters. Today on the show, Charan explains how factors like how we direct our attention, take photos, and move through something called “event boundaries” all affect our memory, and how our current context in life impacts which memories we’re able to recall from the past. We also talk about how to reverse engineer these factors to improve your memory.

What's It Like To Live In Space? One Astronaut Says It Changes Her Dreams
Few humans have had the opportunity to see Earth from space, much less live in space. We got to talk to one of these lucky people — NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara. She will soon conclude her nearly seven month stay on the International Space Station.

Transmitting from space to your ears, Loral talks to host Regina G. Barber about her dreams in microgravity, and her research on the ISS: 3D-printing human heart tissue, how the human brain and body adapt to microgravity, and how space changes the immune systems of plants.

Michelle Obama: How to Stay with Your Partner When They Are Changing & 4 Check-ins You Should Be Doing in Your Relationship

Do you want to learn how to strengthen your relationship over time?

Do you want to have better communication and expectations with your partner?

On this very special episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty sits down with the former First Lady of the country, Michelle Obama. During Michelle’s time as First Lady, Michelle launched several initiatives, including "Let's Move!" which aimed to combat childhood obesity, and "Reach Higher," promoting higher education. Her memoir "Becoming," released in 2018, became one of the best-selling books of that year and took the world by storm. Today we sit down to talk about her most recent book, “The Light We Carry.”

In this raw conversation, Michelle opens up about her thoughts on marriage, fame, and public service. She talks about the toxicity of social media and technology that affects our mental health and how to be open to the changes and possibilities people bring with them. She also talks about how negative news and social updates are affecting our society and the community we are in.

We also dive deep into relationships and  why we put so much pressure on our marriage, how to choose the right person for you and make the relationship work even when it isn’t perfect, and how to practice constructive arguments with your partner.

    In this interview, you’ll learn:

    • How to think freely and independently
    • How to take care of your mental health
    • How to become a supportive partner
    • How deal with negativity
    • How to become an effective leader
    • How to make your marriage last

Together we’ll learn how to find calm amid life's noise, give people the space to be seen and heard, and explore topics that resonate with the very fabric of our personal growth journey.

    With Love and Gratitude,

    Jay Shetty

    I AM NOT A FISH

    I AM NOT A FISH

Happy Tuesday! With the official Therapy Crouch book now on sale, Abbey and Peter have had a busy week of promo, sitting down on the one show couch, this morning and anywhere else that will have them.

For this reason, we sat down in a hotel in London which shared an uncanny resemblance to a budget Chinese restaurant/brothel.

This week, Abbey and Pete are talking about how they are currently trying to reconnect with one another. Pete has got a big surprise trip planned for Abbey that apparently will take them through 2 or her 3 no go zones and Abbey recalls all the little pranks they used to play on each other during their early days together and the gang try and come up with some new ones you can get your other half on!

And you guys have been back in touch looking for advice on matters of the heart! We hear from a woman who is sick to death of the mess her hubby leaves when it comes to trimming his beard and a girl in need of a chat up line for her gym crush.

Our book The Therapy Crouch: In Search of a Happy (N)ever After is out NOW!! To order your copy got to👇

    131. Why does life feel boring?

    131. Why does life feel boring?

We have all had that experience of feeling bored with our everyday life, whereby we look around and our daily experiences have lost some of the colour and excitement. Why is that the case? Psychology can provide some explanations including:

    • A lack of novelty and new experiences
    • Seasonal affective disorder
    • Overstimulation from our phones and social media
    • Social comparison
    • The benefits of a dopamine detox

We discuss all these reasons and more, as well as what we can do to change that! How can we break out of this boredom cycle and feel like our lives and everyday experiences are meaningful by embracing the beauty of an anti-routine, challenging ourselves to try new things once a week, keeping ourselves open to opportunities (even ones that are scary) or even trying a dopamine detox. Listen now for when life feels boring!

92 - James Hudson on moving from Sydney to the Byron Bay hinterland to create a welcoming eco retreat for exhausted city dwellers

92 - James Hudson on moving from Sydney to the Byron Bay hinterland to create a welcoming eco retreat for exhausted city dwellers

When at its very best, hosting is an endeavour underpinned and driven by one core thing - empathy. And that's something my guest today, James Hudson, had in droves when it came to establishing his hugely successful Byron Bay eco retreat Blackbird.

After many years working in Sydney's fast-paced and often gruelling hospitality sector and with a young family in tow, James reached a point where he decided it was time to embrace a slower, less hectic way of life.

This ultimately led him to a former banana plantation in the Byron Bay hinterland, a property he'd go on to buy and - with an eye for innovation and sustainable re-use closely informed by his skills in industrial design - resourcefully convert into the critically acclaimed retreat now known as Blackbird Byron.

Since the property officially opened its doors to guests in 2018, James and his extended team have gone on to receive an enviable array of accolades and awards including a Master Builder's Award in 2020, finalist status in Network Ten's 'Hotels by Design' series and being named one of Tatler Magazine's top 101 hotels in the world.

With Covid only proving to increase demand for stays at Blackbird, James has gone from strength to strength and is now supported by a tight-knit and dedicated team of staff he views as family.

    512: Desert Portal Death Cult

    512: Desert Portal Death Cult
In Episode 512: we are joined by James, who moved to Hollywood recently to help his career in the film industry after previously working out of Atlanta. One night, James and his friend went out to a bar where they met a guy who wanted to take them to another place to drink. Once they arrived at the new location, James' friend was so weirded out by the people he saw that he bailed and left James alone with his new acquaintance, who talked James into going to yet another party out in the desert, in a place called Joshua Tree, outside of Los Angeles. James wound up spending over 24 hours at that location, and he witnessed so many out-of-this-world things. There were vampires, cloaked figures around pentagrams, flying people, and portals opening up - and it all seemed to be focused around the guest of honor, James himself. As the danger rose, James found himself running for his life through the desert to escape these people who seemed to be grooming him as a sacrifice that night. This is one of the wildest stories we have ever had on The Confessionals, and James tells a riveting story, which could be chalked up to a tall tale by many - but James comes with the receipts that point to this event being very real.

(Matt Monday): This Dangerous Guy Keeps You Single

(Matt Monday): This Dangerous Guy Keeps You Single
I’m curious if you can relate to this . . .

You know you have a lot to offer someone, but you can’t seem to get out of the cycle of dating the wrong people—bouncing from one emotionally unavailable guy to the next.

What you may not notice is that—without even realizing it—you’ve likely conditioned yourself to attract those types of guys. While a casual fling with someone like that may feel harmless, you may be surprised to learn just how much it can shift the way you approach dating.

In today’s brand-new episode, I unpack the dangers of settling for casual relationships and how they can rewire your mindset in a way that has a lasting effect on your love life. Then, most importantly, I share how you can get out of that crazy loop and actually see the potential that’s waiting for you.
