How Sesame Street teaches kids about emotional well-being, with Rosemarie Truglio, PhD

Sesame Street has entertained and educated generations of children. Developmental psychologist Rosemarie Truglio, PhD, Sesame Workshop’s senior vice president of curriculum and content, talks about why the show has a new focus on young children’s emotional well-being; how Sesame Street translates complicated concepts into stories that young kids can connect with; the research that underpins all of the content on Sesame Street; and why the Sesame Street characters still resonate with so many adults.

GUEST SERIES | Dr. Matt Walker: Improve Sleep to Boost Mood & Emotional Regulation
This is episode 5 of our 6-part special series on sleep with Dr. Matthew Walker, Ph.D., a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and the host of The Matt Walker Podcast. In this episode, we explain the connection between sleep and mood, emotional regulation and mental well-being.  We explain the role of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in processing emotions and emotional memories and why sleep deprivation causes agitation, impulsivity and emotional reactivity.  We also discuss why sleep disruption is a hallmark feature of PTSD, anxiety, depression, suicidality, and other psychiatric conditions.  We explain protocols for improving REM sleep and other sleep phases in order to harness the therapeutic power of quality sleep to feel calmer and emotionally restored. This episode describes various actionable tools to improve sleep for those struggling with mental health or mood and those wanting to bolster their overall state and well-being.  The next episode in this special series explores dreams, including lucid dreaming, nightmares and dream interpretation. Unstressable with Robert Sapolsky - Revealing Humanity's Inner Workings

Today I'll start with a gentle reminder that our upcoming book "Unstressable: A Practical Guide to Stress-Free Living" is available for preorder. It is written by me, Mo Gawdat and my wonderful co-author Alice Law and we hope it will truly make an impact in getting a million people out of Stress.

A truly remarkable human being. Beyond his groundbreaking research on stress, Robert explores his passion for teaching, his profound insights into the intersection of biology and behavior, and his unyielding curiosity about the human condition. This episode is a celebration of intellectual exploration, the wonders of scientific discovery, and the profound impact of sharing knowledge to illuminate the mysteries of our existence.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • The upcoming release of Unstressable

    318. HEAD NOISE: A 10 Year Affair, Situationship Advice, and Wanting Kids when My Partner Doesn't

    318. HEAD NOISE: A 10 Year Affair, Situationship Advice, and Wanting Kids when My Partner Doesn't

This is my HEAD NOISE episode where you send in your questions and I answer them!

In this episode you’ve asked for my advice on these questions.

    1. A friend of mine admitted that she had been having an affair for 10 years. Looking back I think she told me because she was looking for someone to condone her behaviour. Unfortunately for her I did not. Every time I pointed her in the direction of bettering her situation she would come up with an excuse. I don’t know what else to do. Is this friendship a lost cause?
    2.  I'm starting to get feelings for my “Situationship” or as I’ve started calling it, my situationshit. I met him 4 years ago when travelling and had a one night thing. We kept in touch here and there over the years. Cut to few years later when we were both single again and started having amazing weekends together whenever travel plans aligned. The thing is, I now live closer to him (the reason I moved is separate to him) and I can feel myself getting proper feelings. What should I do?
    3. My partner and I have been together for 4 years and in our early 30s. I really want children but he doesn’t/ We’ve been talking about it on and off for 18 months and have been going to therapy about it. I’m holding on to hope – how long is too long to hold on to that hope.

The foundation of our health is a robust immune system that has a very important mechanism of cleaning out inflammatory cells. If this process is broken, the inflammatory cells can actually turn other functioning cells into inflammatory cells. Our daily life habits and exposures, such as sleep, stress management, diet, and toxins, affect key biological processes that impact our immune function. When our immune health is functioning properly, the rest of our body follows with less illness and disease.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Leonard Calabrese about ways that we can support our immune systems to reduce the chance of illness and disease.

Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing.

Dr. Leonard Calabrese is a Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Vice Chair of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases. He is also the director of the RJ Fasenmyer Center for Clinical Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic and holds joint appointments in the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Wellness Institute.

    145. The psychology of pretty privilege and beauty standards

    145. The psychology of pretty privilege and beauty standards

Attractiveness and beauty is something we all inevitably find ourselves considering. We question whether we would be happier if we lost weight, would find love if our skin was better, would be more successful if we looked more like her or him. Our obsession with beauty is psychological and deeply rooted in our biology and evolution as a species. In today's episode we break down the existence of pretty privilege and beauty standards in our 20s and how they are impacting our mental wellbeing, sense of self worth and even our financial decisions. Become a MAGNET to Love (Do THIS to Change EVERYTHING Before 2024!) | Dr. Nicole LePera

Become a MAGNET to Love (Do THIS to Change EVERYTHING Before 2024!) | Dr. Nicole LePera

Lewis welcomes Dr. Nicole LePera, renowned author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers "How To Do The Work" and “How to Meet Your Self” Workbook. Dr. LePera, the creator of the #SelfHealers movement, discusses her latest book, "How to Be the Love You Seek," offering invaluable insights into healing relationships starting with oneself. She highlights the significance of understanding past traumas and how they shape current relationship dynamics, emphasizing the importance of self-love, emotional resilience, and cultivating healthy connections.

Relationships have always been essential to human survival. Our bodies and brains are programmed to seek out connection, whether familial, romantic, or platonic. And yet, these vital bonds are often at the root of our deepest suffering. While our hearts are primed for compassionate connection, our nervous systems—which store all our past hurts and disappointments—are wired for threat and negativity.

For decades, leading relationship advice has maintained that successful relationships require a specific compromise—that we must change our authentic expression to better meet the needs of others, and vice versa. It may sound reasonable in theory, but as Dr. LePera explains, this approach is nothing less than a recipe for a lifetime of resentment.

Buy her new book How to Be the Love You Seek: Break Cycles, Find Peace, and Heal Your Relationships

In this episode you will learn

    • The difference between self-love and self-worth, and how to focus attention effectively on both.
    • Strategies to practice self-love while maintaining healthy relationships.
    • Common patterns and beliefs that hinder the ability to receive love and ways to shift these mindsets.
    • The role of self-compassion in emotional healing and reprogramming the brain.

6 Signs You’re Addicted to Stress: Psychologist Teaches You How to Remove Drama From Your Life

6 Signs You’re Addicted to Stress: Psychologist Teaches You How to Remove Drama From Your Life

I was talking sh*t about my daughter and got caught red-handed. Talk about unnecessary drama.

We've all been there. And according to today’s expert, this type of conflict is causing more stress than you think.

Today, I am joined by Dr. Scott Lyons, a medical doctor, holistic psychologist, and renowned body-based trauma expert. He says there are 6 telltale signs that you’re addicted to stress.

I never considered myself to be a person who is addicted to stress until this conversation.

Dr. Lyons is certified in more healing modalities than you want me to list and has even created his own body-based trauma therapy called Somatic Stress Release™, taught in over 20 countries.

You and I are digging into the fascinating science, research, and psychology of stress. And more importantly, you are going to get the tools you need to remove it from your life.

Dr. Lyons will explain why we keep ourselves on edge, why we find ourselves picking fights, gossiping, zombie scrolling, and staying in relationships where drama is present.

This is a cycle you need to break. It’s time you slow down and learn:

    • The shocking ways you are addicted to stress.
    • How to deal with drama-addicted friends and significant others.
    • What zombie scrolling, zoning out in front of the TV, and always being on the go say about you.
    • What it means when you always need to be the center of attention.
    • What “revving” is and why you need to stop doing it today.
    • The 3 ways to break free from a stress addiction.

If you’ve read this far, it means you want to feel less stress. I want that for you, too.

That’s why I can’t wait for you to listen and learn how to remove all the unnecessary drama from your life.

    Xo, Mel

For the past few decades, almost every year, levels of depression and anxiety have increased across the Western world. But why?

Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests.

Today’s clip is from episode 94 of the podcast with the brilliant Johann Hari.

Johann went on a forty-thousand-mile journey around the world to interview leading experts about what causes depression and anxiety, and what solves them. In this clip he explains that although we’ve been told a story that drugs are the solution, in many cases the cause is not in our biology but in the way we live.
