Supporting the Mental Health Needs of People with Type 1 Diabetes

Diabetes is a 24-hour condition with no vacations or days off. Those who live with it understand that diabetes distress – the term for mental health challenges specific to diabetes – is very real and can be very challenging to manage. It can also have a big impact on other aspects of diabetes care – like this A1Cs doctors are always checking.

This episode's guests will give listeners lots to think about when it comes to diabetes and mental health – and how Diabetes Action Canada is at the forefront of new programs aimed at improving mental health in everyone with diabetes.

Host Krista Lamb with talk to guests Dr. Carly Whitmore, an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, and Linxi Mytkolli, Diabetes Action Canada’s Lead of Patient Engagement and Knowledge Mobilization and a person living with diabetes.

The Dance of Caregiving, Grief, and Self-Compassion - Marisa Renee Lee

The Dance of Caregiving, Grief, and Self-Compassion - Marisa Renee Lee

We talk a lot about self-compassion and grief. We even have cute sayings like "put your oxygen mask on first," as a way to stave off burnout and fatigue. What happens when you've been in seasons of deep heartbreak, loss, and joy? How do you incorporate grief as a part of the normal ebb and flow of life?

Grief advocate, entrepreneur, and best-selling author Marisa Renee Lee answers this question head on with grace and compassion in this episode. She shares about her own grief journey in losing her mom, her mother-in-law, and others in her family and community. She talks about the both/and of ambiguous grief with infertility, pregnancy loss, and the joy of adoption. Marisa also shares how she's intentionally pushing against the systems that keep us distracted from experiencing healing and finding our footing.

How to Successfully Manage A Medication Change In College: 5 Tips

How to Successfully Manage A Medication Change In College: 5 Tips

If you have a student with a mental health condition, chances are they are taking a medication to help manage it. What happens if they have to change that medication at some point in the semester?

Medications come with thier own set of issues. Changing a medicaiton comes with it's own set of issues. When taking college classes, the a medicaiton change can be challenging.

What do you do you need to consider?

    What are the risks?

How can thgey get through it in the best way possible?

What policies do you need to know about in case you need to use them?

Who do you need to communicate with? Which offices need to be involved?

    Here's what I'll cover:

    1. Know the risks ahead of making the change

    2. Discuss the change with your support team.

    3. Identify the students needs during the medicaiton change.

    4. Communicate with the appropriate campus offices if needed.

    5. Know the school policies that may help.

Handling a medicaiton change can be challenging. At college the stakes are even higher, but it can be managed successfull. Your student does not need to get behing nor drop out, but they need to consider all the options in as much advance as possible.

    A Psychologist Answers Your Questions

    A Psychologist Answers Your Questions

This episode, we’re speaking to Dr Sarah Morris, a clinical psychologist in Melbourne, Australia. Not only is Sarah a specialist who runs her own practice, but she is also a follower of Jesus who walks the road daily in both mental health and faith spaces.

Have you ever wondered, ‘What exactly does a psychologist do?’ Or maybe you’ve heard about cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and ‘measurement-based practice’ and have no idea what those things involve. Well, Dr Sarah is here to answer all our questions!

If you’ve never had any firsthand experience of seeing a psychologist, it can sometimes be a bit confusing to know exactly what that looks like. And, if you’re a person of faith, you may have wondered whether the field of psychology is compatible with our faith.

In this episode, Dr Sarah gives us an overview on what psychology is, how it differs from psychiatry and counselling, and also shares about some of the common types of treatments that psychologists will use with someone. She also shares with us how her Christian faith plays into her profession, and whether faith and psychology are ever at odds. Listen in to find out!

    --

Here in Australia, you can visit a psychologist by chatting with your GP to get on a ‘mental health care plan’. If you’re wanting to know what that first visit to your GP looks like, check out this short video of Dr Sarah (a different Dr Sarah from this episode!) explaining the process.

How Ballet Students Can Maintain Emotional Health While Injured

Dancers focus on cross-training as part of their overall ballet training regimen. But, often, they forget how much mental cross-training they need to do to maintain their emotional health. Elizabeth Sullivan, a ballet wellness coach, joins us to discuss how dancers can maintain their emotional health while dealing with the pressures of high level ballet training, especially when coming back from an injury.

Elizabeth also spends some time discussing what she would like to see change with ballet schools as it relates to how ballet schools help students with rehab and retuning to class after an injury.

For dancers who may be interested in working with Elizabeth, she partners not only with ballet schools, but also indivual dancers to help them build and maintain their mental toolkit so they can get the most out of their ballet training.

ARP 328 Breathing and Humming Resources for Anxiety

I'm on the summer slow down vibe, but there are lots of interesting ways to handle and reduce symptoms.

One of those ways is combining a breathing practice with humming. To be clear, I'm talking about the sound that humans make with their mouths. Usually involves the sound "hum".

Take the human body, the Vagus nerve and an open mind and you just might have an additional tool to tell the body to relax, there isn't a danger or problem.

    Might work for you.

    Might not.

I do know that it is a free, no risk, non-toxic option to try.

This is a quick introduction to the topic and a few resources to get you started.
