This is supposed to be hard

This is supposed to be hard

    (sorry)

Yes. It's going to be hard. When we approach this acting thing with embracing of the hard, rather than the resistance to it - it gives us a new way of approaching the business where we might find ourselves less stressed AF...

But also - this isn't about by passing your feelings when it gets hard either...(duh)

So let's talk about it :)

This week, where I'm just 4 days out from running the Boston Marathon, I'll share with you...

    • 2 things that have gone really well during my training
    • 2 big challenges that have come up
    • 3 key takeaways for actors to deal with the hard and a better way to approach the biz.

WE COULD USE YOUR HELP :)

KIRSTEN VANGSNESS: Filling the Art Well Versus the Commerce Well

KIRSTEN VANGSNESS: Filling the Art Well Versus the Commerce Well

For 17 seasons, actor Kirsten Vangsness has been known and loved for her role as Penelope Garcia, the witty and fashionable technical analyst on CBS's hit series "Criminal Minds," now newly reimagined for Paramount+.

From hosting her own YouTube series podcast, to doing theater productions while simultaneously balancing her series regular role, it's easy to wonder when she manages to get any sleep. Rather than viewing it as work, however, Kirsten says she chooses to fill her life with the things she loves and emphasizes the importance of doing the inner work to recognize what those things are.

In today's episode, we get honest about actor mental health, as Kirsten shares her story and reminds us that no matter what level we're at, we can all continue to learn from one another as actors.

LI JUN LI: It’s a Slow & Steady Climb

LI JUN LI: It’s a Slow & Steady Climb

Li Jun Li knows what it is to shape an acting career one building block at a time. Immigrating with her parents to New York, Li describes herself as a painfully shy child with those around her recognizing what she was meant to do well before she did. As a viewer, you can't help but lean in when watching her in hit projects including "Sex/Life," "Babylon," "The Exorcist," and more. Today, in addition to sharing how she transitioned from working in theater to film and television, Li also offers advice for how actors can advocate for themselves when it comes to nudity on set and lends insight on what to remember in those moments when you feel like quitting.

She quit acting (but won Jeopardy) - with Joyce Hshieh

Today’s guest is actor’s memorization coach Joyce Hshieh.

Joyce Hshieh is a trained actress and graduate of the BFA acting program of The Theatre School at DePaul University. She is also a 3-day champion on the game show Jeopardy.

Combining her knowledge of acting with her knowledge of memorization and learning, she founded Off Book It, where through her course and coaching, she teaches actors how to memorize lines fast and make them stick. She’s helped many actors overcome their line memorization hurdles to achieve freedom and confidence in their acting.

She’s been a featured guest with Actors Breakfast Club, DaJuan Johnson’s Self-tapes That Book, Ajarae Coleman’s The Table, Blythe Howard’s commercial workshop, Anastasia Edwards’s Actor’s Biz, Actor Playbook, Working Actor Pro, Limelight, Film Festival Live, and the Why I’ll Never Make It Podcast.

    Connect with Joyce!
