Private Lounge: Resilience, Rejection, and the Power of Personal Triumph

Have you ever been knocked down by life's curveballs, only to pick yourself up again? Our latest Private Lounge chat episode is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, as we open our hearts to discuss the stings of rejection and the grip of financial challenges.  We tackle the uphill battles of loan acquisition, the emotional toll of student debts, and the predatory nature of some systems that bind us. It's a conversation that weaves the thread of hope through the fabric of hardship, reminding us that while the struggle is real, it isn't a solo journey.

Transitioning from hardship to personal triumph, our dialogue moves to the growth that buds from adversity. We share stories of how crushing professional rejection can lead to a stronger sense of self, the value of recognizing one's worth early in life, and the beauty of personal development. These anecdotes aren't just about overcoming, but about flourishing in the face of societal beauty standards and the transformative power of self-acceptance. They're tales of life's unexpected admirers and the hidden potential that lies within each of us.

Finally, we celebrate the bold steps and life-affirming choices that define our journeys. From taking calculated risks in career shifts to the joyous leap of relocating, we highlight the courage behind these decisions and the meticulous planning that often goes unnoticed. We delve into the richness of supportive communities, the bravery in sharing our stories, and the impact our actions have on those around us. Join us as we navigate through the complexities of life, sharing not only a dose of reality but also a heaping helping of optimism for anyone on the cusp of taking their own leap of faith.

    Learn from every "no"

    Learn from every "no"

In the entrepreneurial journey, facing rejection is not just a possibility, but a certainty. However, it's the ability to perceive these rejections not as setbacks, but as stepping stones, that sets apart the most successful entrepreneurs.

Each 'no' offers a unique opportunity to refine an idea, sharpen a pitch, and foster resilience. It can even be a sign that your idea is so contrarian that it could be truly transformative.

This is a theory we've explored before on Masters of Scale. And now we're revisiting it in this special "Remix" episode. We'll hear a range of scale leaders share their strategies for weathering the chorus of no's, and see how doing so was a vital part of their scale journeys.

E214: Parenting Lessons from Bad Bosses: When Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) affects our Parenting and Partners

What’s your story of working under an unqualified or unsupportive boss? I’m sharing a few of my terrible boss experiences.

But today’s episode is not just about the bad bosses in the workplace. As a parent, we often feel underqualified. You don’t want to be a “bad boss”, but no one handed you an instruction manual when your children arrived!

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?

When you don’t feel sure of your choices, it starts to seep into your confidence level. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) shows up to make you doubt your parenting decisions, increasing the guilt around what you should have done, and layering in the shame on how you’re ruining your kids forever with your mess ups.Yikes!

RSD also taints how we relate to our partners, which can stir up the same conflict over and over again. It influences how we react to the slightest eyebrow raise and every “what if” scenario. It makes you scared to bring up important conversations.

Knowing it’s not just you is half the battle. Let’s dive into how we can better support and care for our families and partners, by starting with ourselves.

    Kona Ice: Tony Lamb

    Kona Ice: Tony Lamb

Kona Ice founder Tony Lamb had a knack for sales since he was a teenager - a skill that served him well when he decided to sell Hawaiian-style shaved ice in Kentucky, where people had barely heard of it. After thirteen successful years as a vacuum cleaner salesman, Tony launched his first shaved ice truck in 2007. Fueled by a bad experience buying freezer-burned popsicles off a battered ice cream truck, he built a custom-made vehicle with a tropical vibe and a built-in “Flavorwave” that let customers dispense their own syrups. Two decades after surrendering his salesman’s suit for a Hawaiian shirt, Tony has grown Kona Ice into a sprawling franchise with 1500 trucks across North America.

Seth Fishman: ...the industry is right now, where editors are just, they just have, they're just too busy. There's just not enough people working in publishing. So it's harder for agents to do to sell books is really what we're saying. There's a number of times that were like, were you passing because of this, you don't want to put that like, work into it or whatever. But you know, what the people pass for all sorts of reasons, we get the books into pretty great shape, before we send them out. And I mean, we try to, and if an editor is passing, for those reasons, they're what they're really probably saying is more along the lines of developing of an author versus, like editing an author.

EP 21: Donal Ryan on Writing Novels: The Good, The Bad, and The Beauty.

Award-winning Irish novelist Donal Ryan speaks about why he writes and the range of emotions he encounters during the creative process. We discussed how sharing your art can be like revealing a part of your soul & why writers are so sensitive to criticism. Donal has published seven novels and is a professor of creative writing at the University of Limerick, yet still struggles to tell people he is a 'writer'.

This was an uplifting discussion that touched on a range of important topics. Donal also reads a sample of his latest novel 'The Queen of Dirt Island'.

This is supposed to be hard

This is supposed to be hard

    (sorry)

Yes. It's going to be hard. When we approach this acting thing with embracing of the hard, rather than the resistance to it - it gives us a new way of approaching the business where we might find ourselves less stressed AF...

But also - this isn't about by passing your feelings when it gets hard either...(duh)

So let's talk about it :)

This week, where I'm just 4 days out from running the Boston Marathon, I'll share with you...

    • 2 things that have gone really well during my training
    • 2 big challenges that have come up
    • 3 key takeaways for actors to deal with the hard and a better way to approach the biz.

Rejection, adversity, and overcoming hardship - with Cheryl LaMee & The Julie Fund

If you're wondering how to deal with rejection and stay positive in the face of adversity - this episode is for you.

I brought on the Executive Director of the Julie Fund for Women's Cancer, Cheryl LaMee.

The mission of The Julie Fund for Women’s Cancers is to fight women’s cancers in three spaces:

    • Education/Advocacy
    • Research

The Julie Fund was founded in 2004 and has grown to become the single largest contributor to ovarian cancer research at Mass General Hospital.  In the past 17 years, The Julie Fund has donated over $4M in the fight against women’s cancers.

In 2003 – Forty-year-old Julie McAvinn, mother of three, was undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer and envisioned an organization that focused on easing the struggle.

A year later, Julie lost her battle.  Julie’s husband, Peter, together with a group of dedicated friends, started The Julie Fund.   A partnership was established with Massachusetts General Hospital to give social services to patients in need – transportation, childcare, health care, mortgage payments, etc.

Today's episode will cover the history of the Julie Fund, the adversity Cheryl faces when applying for help with the Julie Fund, plus some inspiring stories to remind us to keep going when times get hard.

4 Steps to Improve Your Self Awareness to Reach Your Goals & How to Change Your Perspective on Rejection

Today, I am going to share with you the conversation I had with Rich Roll in his podcast. I talk about my experiences as a monk and share insights on meditation, mindfulness, and conscious capitalism. I also talk about the double-edged sword of social media and how it can be used for good. Our conversation also touches on the topic of happiness, and I provide tips on how to reframe one's perspective on life. We should reflect on one's passions and expertise, find patterns in one's life, and create an environment for opportunities to come later.

How to Get Over Rejection | Florence Williams

How to Get Over Rejection | Florence Williams

This is the last episode in our four-part series where we’re counter-programming against the way Valentine’s Day is often celebrated, and examining different kinds of relationships including romantic, friendship, and family.

Today we’re probing a mystery: Why, from an evolutionary standpoint do we take heartbreak and rejection so hard? It can send the body and mind into a vicious spiral. As one genomics researcher has said, “heartbreak is one of the hidden landmines of human existence.“

There are countless pieces of art dedicated to heartbreak. Songs, movies, poems, the list is pretty much endless. But what does science say? Why does this happen to us? How exactly does the body react to a bad break up, from a romantic partnership, or a friendship or even a job? And what can we do to get over it?

These are the questions the writer, Florence Williams decided to tackle after her own 25 year marriage fell apart. And the answers are fascinating.

Florence Williams is a science journalist and author, and a contributing editor at Outside Magazine. Her latest book is called, Heartbreak: A Personal and Scientific Journey. It is just out in paperback, and has been nominated for the PEN/Wilson Award for Literary Science Writing.

In this episode we talk about:

    • The passage of time as a way to heal all wounds
    • The role purpose plays in recovery
    • William’s three part heartbreak recovery toolkit (calming down, connecting to other people and finding purpose)
    • The connection between openness and resilience
    • How to become more open to a lack of closure
    • The good and bad news about heartbreak
    • And, rejecting some of the conventional approaches to heartbreak
