Snacksize 15: What is The Happiness Equation?

Today’s snacksize Doctor’s Kitchen podcast is all about framing happiness so you can experience more positivity day to day.

Taken from the full episode #100 Four Lifestyle Equations Everyone needs to know, where I talk about a selection of formulas that I try and put into practice each day.

Mo Gawdat first talked to us about this equation back on episode #91 Solving Happiness, which is one of my favourite episodes to date.

How The Brain Experiences Pleasure — Even The Kind That Makes Us Feel Guilty

How The Brain Experiences Pleasure — Even The Kind That Makes Us Feel Guilty
We've all been there: You sit down for one episode of a reality TV show, and six hours later you're sitting guiltily on the couch, blinking the screen-induced crust off your eyeballs.

Okay. Maybe you haven't been there like our team has. But it's likely you have at least one guilty pleasure, whether it's playing video games, reading romance novels or getting swept into obscure corners of TikTok. It turns out that experiencing – and studying – pleasure is not as straightforward as it might seem. And yet, pleasure is quite literally key to the survival of humanity. So today on the show, we explore the pleasure cycle: What it is, where it lives in the brain and how to have a healthier relationship with the things that make us feel good.

Want more on the brain? Email us the neuroscience you want us to talk about at shortwave@npr.org! (Also please email us if you would like to gush about any of the books you've been loving — romantasy or otherwise!)

Moment 153: Happiness Engineer Explains The Exact Formula For Happiness: Mo Gowdat

Moment 153: Happiness Engineer Explains The Exact Formula For Happiness: Mo Gowdat
In this moment, former chief business officer for Google X and bestselling author, Mo Gawdat, discusses the happiness equation. According to Mo, we don’t realise that happiness is actually very predictable, so much so that it can actually be put into a mathematical equation. Mo says the formula for happiness is: your perception of the events of your life minus your expectations of how life should be. This means, that it’s not specific events that cause happiness, but it is the comparison between the event and the expectation you have in your mind of how your life should be going. As a result happiness is all about perception, which means you have the ability to control your happiness and it becomes a choice that you decide.
