#389 How To Live A Long & Healthy Life with Dr Peter Attia

#389 How To Live A Long & Healthy Life with Dr Peter Attia

Imagine yourself in the last decade of your life. What would you like to be able to do? I’m talking about the simple stuff, such as walking up a flight of stairs without losing your breath or picking up your grandchild. How about being able to stand up unaided, after sitting comfortably on the floor? Or simply being able to get yourself on and off the toilet with ease?

It’s so easy to assume these everyday movements will still be easy when we’re old. But my guest this week wants us to get real to the fact they probably won’t – unless we take action now.

Dr Peter Attia is a medical doctor and founder of the Early Medical Practice, a private clinic in America, which helps patients lengthen their lifespan and improve their ‘healthspan’. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller: Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity.

In our first conversation (Ep 356) Peter explained how years of research have shown him that physical activity is the number one predictor of longevity. In this new episode, we unpack what that means and what strategies you can use to live a long and healthy life.

Peter explains a concept that he calls the Centenarian Decathlon – a novel, but specific way of thinking about the various forms of movement we might require IF we want to be strong, fit, and active in our later years. He explains you need to be a good generalist with a high peak cardiorespiratory fitness, a wide aerobic base, functional strength, and good levels of stability, and why each of those metrics is important and how we can start improving them.

If you’re in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s – then training today for your twilight years might seem too distant a goal to feel motivating. If you’re active now, it’s easy to think you’ll be fine by then. But, Peter says, you’re kidding yourself if you think that your day-to-day function will not decline, as you get older. And, so he wants to empower us and demonstrate what we need to do today, to ensure we will have the life we want later.

We also cover resistance training, Zone 2 training, grip strength, and foot strength, training for teenagers, training for women around menopause and so much more. This is an insightful episode, full of practical advice and wisdom. I hope you enjoy listening.

Prevalence of Arthritis Among Adult Caregivers

Prevalence of Arthritis Among Adult Caregivers
While caregiving provides numerous benefits, it can negatively affect caregivers' mental and physical health because caregivers often provide care while neglecting their own health care needs. A recent CDC study found that nearly 1 in 5 caregivers report fair or poor health; almost 2 in 5 caregivers have at least two chronic diseases; and 1 in 8 caregivers aged 45 or older self-reported worsening memory loss.

The Summit of Greatness is back! Buy your tickets today – summitofgreatness.com –

Peter Attia discusses why we’re living longer, but our quality of life is decreasing. Aging often comes with significant physical problems that are increasingly tough to deal with. As we get older, we may develop knee or hip problems, hearing or vision loss, or even memory problems. These things have a significant impact on our lives and our families — so how can we stay healthier longer?

Mark Sisson is a decorated endurance athlete who used to race competitively in triathlons and qualified for the Olympic marathon team. He has decades of experience in what works and what doesn’t when it comes to diet and workouts for optimal performance. His bestselling book, The Primal Blueprint, is centered on the idea that when we get our bodies to burn fat instead of sugar or carbs, we function the way we were built to.

Rich Roll battled alcohol addiction from the age of 17 to 31. When he finally went to a treatment center, he spent 100 days there, instead of the typical 28 days. But it changed his life, and he never returned to his previous bad habits. When he got out of the treatment center, he pursued a career most people would consider ideal and made a great living. The problem was, it wasn’t the life he wanted, and it physically took a toll on him.

Dr. Nicole LePera is a Holistic Psychologist who believes that mental wellness is for everyone. She evolved her more traditional training from Cornell University and The New School to one that acknowledges the connection between the mind and body. Dr. LePera founded the Mindful Healing Center in Center City Philadelphia where she works with individuals, couples, and families taking gut health, sleep, movement, cellular health, belief, and mindfulness into treatment.

In this episode you will learn,

    • Which diseases are killing people the most and what to do about it.
    • How we are going about medicine the wrong way.
    • The four pillars of being a kick-ass 100-year-old.
    • What are the three main pieces of our healthspan are.
    • What things are attributing to bad sleeping patterns.

Dr. Elissa Epel: Control Stress for Healthy Eating, Metabolism & Aging

Dr. Elissa Epel: Control Stress for Healthy Eating, Metabolism & Aging
In this episode, my guest is Elissa Epel, Ph.D., professor and vice chair of the department of psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the author of a new book entitled "The Stress Prescription." We discuss her work showing how stress impacts mood, eating behavior, mental health, physical health, and aging. She explains stress intervention tools using “top-down” techniques (e.g., radical acceptance, mindfulness, reframing), body-based methods (e.g., breathwork) including the Wim Hof Method, exercise, meditation, body scans, and environmental shifts proven to help people cease unhealthy rumination patterns. We discuss how stress can positively impact psychology and sense of purpose, how stress affects cellular aging, how our narratives of stressful events impact our mood and biology, and how to effectively reframe stress. She explains science-based techniques to break stress-induced cycles of craving and overeating and thereby improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic health. Dr. Epel provides a wide range of tools shown to be effective in reducing stress and improving various aspects of our health. For the full show notes, visit hubermanlab.com. How And Why We Age

    How And Why We Age

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and ButcherBox.

Exciting discoveries emerging from the field of aging research are pointing to a radically new approach to how we deal with getting older. Science is getting to the root cause of why aging is often accompanied by a decline in function and decrepitude. If we understand the why—the root causes and the changes they trigger in our biology, in our interconnected web of molecules and cells and tissues—then we can transform our health and well-being and extend our lives, both our healthspan and our life span.

In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I discuss how and why we age. What I’ve discovered has blown my mind and changed the way I approach my own health and the health of my patients. I’ve compiled it all into a new book called Young Forever, which comes out on February 21, 2023. Learn more and preorder the book at youngforeverbook.com.

How Silent Inflammation Accelerates Aging with Dr. David Furman

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, and InsideTracker.

If you’re interested in health, you’ve heard the term inflammation quite a bit. But did you know there are different kinds of inflammation? Some of them are more alarming than others. Acute inflammation happens when you cut your finger and it gets red and a little swollen. This is helpful inflammation and usually resolves in about a week. But the inflammation that naturally happens as we age, called sterile-inflammation, sets us up for less resiliency against things like autoimmunity, cancer, and other forms of chronic disease.

Today, I’m excited to dive deep into the topic of inflammation and its role in aging with Dr. David Furman. Dr. David Furman is Associate Professor and Director of the Bioinformatics Core at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, as well as the Director of the Stanford 1000 Immunomes Project. He obtained his doctoral degree in immunology from the School of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, for his work on cancer immune-surveillance. During his postdoctoral training at the Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Furman focused on the application of advanced analytics to study the aging of the immune system in humans.

Don't Loose Your Identity In the Process

Somehow, we become parents and lose our identity in the process.  All of a sudden we are just Lil Suzie's mom.

The days are long and the years are short as most people put it.  Megan Reyes is my guest - curator of The (Mostly) Managed Mommy Facebook group where moms can have vulnerable conversations about the daily trials in the trenches of motherhood.  We don't want to air our dirty laundry or frustrations on our personal feed but it is nice to know there is a safe place to go to seek support or advice.  In a world full of judgment and Pinterest, this Facebook group is for moms in any stage of life facing all struggles.

Including the struggle of losing your identity.  Megan encourages mamas to know who they are and set an example for our children for future generations. Let them see you resolve conflict, be frustrated, and be flexible when plans do play out as they were supposed to.  Yes mom can do alot but it's not all on mom, dad and children can help too.  We always hear "You can't pour from an empty cup." You still have to do the things that bring you joy so you can in turn pour into your family!  And you want to still have time with friends and explore hobbies because the last thing you want to do is panic from an empty nest when the kids have grown up and are off doing their own thing. You want to be a (mostly) managed mommy!

    Don't Give Up Hope!

Domestic violence is still a very real thing in this day and age.  My guest Samantha MacMillan was brave enough to share her story.  Samantha encourages others out there that are or were in her same position to not give up hope.  Among other advice, she shared she stressed going to the hospital the night of the assault and to report it to the police.  Hindsight is 20/20 and Samantha can attest to that.  There are things she would have done differently had she been able to assess the situation from the outside looking in.  Samantha also shared her frustration with outsiders putting blame on the victims and the fact that they are expected to co-parent with their abuser in some situations.  She feared for her life and her son's life.  Thankfully they are safe now and she wants that for everyone in an abusive situation.  She shares her story to encourage others and now starting a 501C to act in her passion for helping other victims...survivors.

    Rich vs. Wealthy

Will you be rich or wealthy in the second half of your financial life? David Rosell was my guest on this episode, author of "Failure Is Not An Option" and offered the idea that the last day you contribute to your investments is you entering the second half of your financial journey.  Did you contribute enough?  People are living longer so it's challenging to know what to plan for. Last year Hallmark sold 75,000 100th birthday cards!!  Can you believe it??  David also offered a few risks you want to watch out for while planning for this second half of your financial life. In his book, he focuses on 8 risks but touched base on the three that really stand out.

    Give It A Rest

"Give It a Rest" is what Matty tells his clients. Matty encourages his clients to try intermittent fasting. He is a Scientist and Nutritionist and has a good understanding of the body. A lot of how our bodies work relates back to primal times. You have heard all about the brain keeping us safe from danger, like being attacked by a lion?  Well, our bodies also are primal in the sense that you need to give your body a break from digesting food so it can regenerate the rest of the body.  If you are eating all the time, and Matty said based on a study he read, the average American eats 6-11 times a day, and you are never giving your body a break from digestion.  All that energy could be used to repair other parts of the body or just more easily perform normal bodily functions.  I asked Matty about women vs. men with intermittent fasting and he explained that it is in fact different due to our monthly cycle. Matty shared so much information and there's so much to learn from this episode!

    I Want Sliding Shelves

    I Want Sliding Shelves

"I am not old by any stretch of the imagination but I want those sliding shelves."  My guest Heidi Huynh told me about sliding shelves that can help with not having to bend over and dig in lower cupboards.  She shared lots of ways to adapt your home for aging.  She made a good point to make a change before aging forces you to learn a new way.  She gave an example of purchasing your next dining set with chairs that have arms.  The arms can assist you in getting out of the chair. The last thing you want to do is buy a new dining set only to have to replace it 3 years later due to your physical abilities changing. Heidi spoke about the physical adaptations you can make to your home as well as mental challenges you may face.  You can slowly implement the adaptations you may need. She encourages clients to consider where they want to age and will they have assistance to help with daily tasks.  She reiterated to maybe make the move before your abilities force you to. Or maybe you simply want to be around others in the same stage of life as you - assistance needed or not. At the end of the day, just think ahead and if you want the sliding shelves now...why not! Install them!

How Your Expectations Can Change Your Life

How Your Expectations Can Change Your Life

During World War II, Henry Beecher, an anesthesiologist serving in the U.S. Army, noticed that 32% of the soldiers he treated for horrific battle wounds felt no pain. A further 44% experienced only slight or mild discomfort, despite the fact they had shrapnel embedded in their bodies. Beecher hypothesized that the euphoria of surviving battle resulted in the release of a natural painkiller. When morphine was running low in Europe, Beecher thought he could harness the mind’s seeming ability to produce natural painkillers in a different way by injecting soldiers who were about to undergo surgery with a simple saline solution, while telling the soldiers they were receiving morphine. About 90% of these patients underwent the surgery with little or no pain.

Beecher’s field-expedient placebo treatments would go on to open up decades of research into the power of our expectations. On today’s show, my guest will walk us through that fascinating research, and how the connection between the body and the mind is a lot stronger and wilder than we know.

His name is David Robson and he’s an award-winning science writer and the author of The Expectation Effect: How Your Mindset Can Change Your World. David and I begin our conversation with how and why the brain operates as a prediction machine, and how the expectations it generates can shape the reality we experience. We then discuss how even when someone’s pain or condition is very real, the placebo effect can have an equally real effect on their physiology — even when people know they’re taking a placebo. We also get into the “nocebo effect,” where your expectation that a drug will have negative side effects, in fact produces those side effects. From there we turn to how the expectation effect has powerful results beyond the medical world, and shows up in the areas of sleep, diet, and fitness, including how thinking of doing chores as exercise actually increases the health benefits of that activity, how reframing your anxiety can turn it into a performance-enhancing boost, and how your perception of getting older hugely affects how you will actually physically and mentally age.
