    Ep #87: The Discomfort Zone

In this episode we get into what is standing between you right now and your desires: the discomfort zone. You will learn why we feel so much resistance with it, and get a refreshed perspective on it - I like to call it the 'growth zone' for that reason. I break down for you the process which takes place when you're trying to make a change, and how to get through your discomfort zone instead of avoiding it. You will leave feeling motivated to try it for yourself, which pays huge dividends when it comes to your life fulfillment.

Please share with a friend or colleague who has been willing to create some change, but for some reason doesn't seem to make it happen. And leave me a review if this episode resonated with you.

Finding a restroom may seem like a mundane task, but its significance cannot be overstated. The need to relieve oneself is a basic physiological requirement, and access to clean and safe restroom facilities is essential for maintaining physical health, hygiene, and overall well-being. Whether it's at work, school, shopping centers, or during travel, the availability of restrooms plays a crucial role in our daily lives.

First and foremost, the importance of finding a restroom lies in maintaining good physical health. Holding in urine for prolonged periods can lead to discomfort and potentially serious health issues such as urinary tract infections or bladder problems. Similarly, delaying bowel movements can cause constipation and other gastrointestinal issues. Access to restrooms allows individuals to attend to these bodily functions promptly, promoting proper digestion and eliminating waste effectively.

Moreover, restroom facilities contribute to public hygiene and sanitation. Proper disposal of bodily waste helps prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, and diseases. Clean restrooms equipped with soap and water enable individuals to practice proper hand hygiene, reducing the risk of contracting or transmitting illnesses such as the common cold, flu, or gastrointestinal infections. In public spaces, well-maintained restrooms also enhance the overall cleanliness and appeal of the environment, contributing to a positive experience for visitors and patrons.

For individuals with specific medical conditions or disabilities, finding a restroom is not just a matter of convenience but a necessity for their health and dignity. Accessible restroom facilities equipped with features such as grab bars, raised toilet seats, and spacious layouts ensure that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can attend to their personal needs comfortably and safely. Adequate provision of accessible restrooms promotes inclusivity and equal participation in society for individuals with disabilities.

In addition to physical health considerations, the availability of restrooms can have significant implications for mental well-being and productivity. The anxiety and discomfort associated with urgently needing to use the restroom but being unable to find one can be distressing and distracting, particularly in high-stress situations such as exams, job interviews, or important meetings. Access to readily available restrooms alleviates this stress and allows individuals to focus on their tasks and responsibilities without unnecessary disruptions.

Furthermore, the importance of finding a restroom extends beyond individual health and well-being to broader societal and economic factors. Adequate restroom facilities are essential for supporting tourism, commerce, and public events. Tourists and visitors expect clean and accessible restrooms when exploring new destinations, and the availability of such facilities can influence their overall satisfaction and likelihood of returning. Similarly, businesses that provide well-maintained restrooms demonstrate a commitment to customer service and hygiene standards, enhancing their reputation and attracting repeat clientele.

In conclusion, while the search for a restroom may seem trivial, its importance cannot be underestimated. Access to clean, safe, and accessible restroom facilities is essential for maintaining physical health, promoting hygiene and sanitation, supporting individuals with disabilities, reducing stress and anxiety, and fostering societal well-being and economic prosperity. By prioritizing the provision and maintenance of restroom facilities, communities can ensure the health, comfort, and dignity of all individuals.

Episode #109: Betsy by Herself on Appreciating the Things That Have Made You

Episode #109: Betsy by Herself on Appreciating the Things That Have Made You

Looking back at your life, at some of the things that have been difficult or even traumatic, how have those things actually been part of your path to becoming who you needed to become? And how have some of the most difficult things you might have gone through actually been divinely chosen training to create the ‘architecture’ of your life, or gain skills you needed to deliver your mission in the world?

Betsy thinks out loud while asking these questions and shares how she has come to appreciate how she now appreciates her own Fundamentalist Christian upbringing for the spiritual practices and discipline it provided. Because those are the practices that helped her to become who she now is.

Give yourself space and a bit of time to dive inside and apply the questions Betsy asks to your own life and background, then feel free to get in touch! 14: Adjusting To The Western World After Living As a Buddhist Monk

14: Adjusting To The Western World After Living As a Buddhist Monk

Today’s episode was requested by a few of you. I have to say that it was really NOT easy at first! As soon as I landed in Canada, I was ready to give up everything and go right back. The reverse culture shock hit very hard. I went from living in silence in the jungle, meditating 6 hours a day, and sleeping in a tent for a couple of months to coming back to a very fast-paced big city. Depression hit me hard for the first couple of months. I wanted nothing to do with any of it so I pulled myself away.

13: Cristi on Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone and Going After Your Goals

In today's episode, I have a heart-to-heart conversation with a dear friend of mine whom I met 12 years ago in College. Cristi and I rarely speak nor see each other nowadays since he moved to Switzerland 5 years ago. We went over his story of migrating to Canada when he was a teenager and the hard times that came with it, to his decision to leave Montreal and move to Switzerland with his girlfriend. He shares what it took to get through the dark moments of his life and why he decided to take a huge risk with his move to another continent.

I am absolutely loving these episodes as it feels so natural and freeing. Hope you guys enjoy it!

This episode is a gentle reminder that you're never alone on your journey of life, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Tune in to learn how to step out of your comfort zone, hold onto your faith, and embrace discomfort. Let's grow together with The Guided Words.

Episode #101: Isidra Mencos on Lust and Pleasure as a Pathway to Self-Discovery

Episode #101: Isidra Mencos on Lust and Pleasure as a Pathway to Self-Discovery

In this episode of The Discomfort Practice, I speak to Isidra Mencos, who was born and raised in Barcelona, Spain, about her journey through life as a young woman who grew up under Franco, a repressive dictator, and came of age as Spain was massively changing after his death.

We talk about what happens when a young woman who grew up in a place where kissing in public was illegal finds herself suddenly free to explore whatever she wants.

Speaking to Isidra was something of a bridge between my US past and my Spanish present. There are definite parallels in our backgrounds. Isidra moved to the US in 1992 to complete a PhD at UC Berkeley in California. Following that, she established herself as a teacher at Berkeley, a writer and editor, and a corporate executive. In 2016 she quit her plush corporate job to finally focus on her lifelong dream of being a creative writer. She has been widely published in literary journals and general interest magazines, but what drew me to Isidra was the recent publication of her memoir, Promenade of Desire, which narrates the journey of the shy María Isidra as she experiments and evolves.

We talk about the beauty of desire and the freedom that exploration - sexual and otherwise - can give all of us to become who we truly are and to love our full selves. Our conversation took us to some uncomfortable yet juicy and important topics. So come get uncomfortable with us… and find pleasure in the episode if you can!

    36 This is Uncomfortable.....

    36 This is Uncomfortable.....

This episode was inspired by my own personal journey addressing some discomfort over a much-anticipated upcoming event. While helping myself become more relaxed, I was reminded of some parallels in my work with animals. The word uncomfortable can mean different things to different trainers. Therefore, I cover some common scenarios that trainers may describe as uncomfortable for animals. This might be cooperating in certain medical behaviors, or holding positions for duration, or doing behaviors in new environments.  This also requires describing observable measurable behaviors that can give trainers information that an animal might be uncomfortable. Most importantly, I cover some strategies to consider to prevent or address discomfort. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode and the real-life examples that illustrate the behavior science and its application.

Episode #98: Betsy By Herself - A Love Letter to Introverted Moments

Episode #98: Betsy By Herself - A Love Letter to Introverted Moments

This solo definitely builds on past solos about transitions and life processes because, surprise surprise, I’m still in a big life transition. This is a love letter to other secret introverts and to quiet moments. It’s to those of you out there who crave quiet and alone time and to just be left alone for a while - regularly or from time to time.

Right now I need and crave a lot of solitude, a lot of quiet time, because I'm going through a big internal process and building the architecture of my life for the coming years. It’s about running a business, but it’s also about becoming. Being who I need to be to deliver what I feel is my mission in the world.

I’m currently spending a lot of time letting things flow, letting things drop into place and letting things ‘occur’ to me. And to do that I’ve created a quiet little bubble of beauty and solitude and I am loving it. Because it allows me to hear my intuition. To guide myself. To not get tangled in the noise of ‘shoulds’ or ‘shouldn’ts’ or simply the thoughts of others.

I encourage you to challenge any narratives you have around allowing yourself to take time to be quiet, to be introverted, introspective. Because this is what a lot of us need right now and it’s what the world needs us to choose to do. It’s in that space that you can connect with who you ARE and what your instincts tell you.

It’s also space that we all need to change our narratives and thinking that really won’t serve us as we move into a new stage of human history, and a new stage of your individual life.

Please do reach out to me if this episode resonates and you’d like to reflect on your own ‘knowings’ and thoughts around some of the things I talk about and your life right now. I’m here to support you and I would love to connect. Enjoy and big love to all of you listening.

Episode #96: Michael Youngblood on the Value of Beautiful Questions

Episode #96: Michael Youngblood on the Value of Beautiful Questions

In this episode of the Discomfort Practice, I talk with Michael Youngblood, co-founder and CEO of Unsettled, an award-winning travel community for those who embrace the unknown and value meaningful human connection. He has worked in more than 60 countries, collaborated with the White House on entrepreneurship and global development, advised Fortune 100 companies on remote work, and has taught courses on entrepreneurship and globalisation on behalf of the U.S. State Department. Previously, he was the Managing Editor of Innovations journal, a publication about entrepreneurial solutions to global challenges that is jointly hosted by MIT, Harvard, and George Mason University. Michael is a member of the inaugural TED Residency, a member of Sandbox, and an avid sailor, mountain biker, and global explorer.

Michael and I discuss Unsettled’s manifesto as a process and a guiding philosophy for how to live, through embracing the uncomfortable and the unknown. MIchael shares his own thoughts on navigating anxiety and depression in work and life, and the importance of taking time for self-reflection. We explore some ‘beautiful questions,’ and hopefully help those listening to discover something themselves with those questions (or discover their own questions to help them explore and find their way of being, living and doing in this rapidly changing world). Many of us know that we can’t do things the way they’ve always been done, so this is a timely conversation. Just know that you’re not alone. Enjoy!

    Key Points Discussed:

    • The uncomfortable childhood experience of holding hands with his adoptive black sister and being the target of hate speech, showed Michael early on the levels of prejudice and inequalities existing in the world. And how that led to him studying social sciences, as the pathway he saw to change social structures. (5:40)

    • Michael views all questions as beautiful, as they open you up to possibilities, whilst seeking new answers. (13:00)

    • What is your dream underachiever job? (17:20)

    • Getting clear on what is important to Michael, with time and space for self-reflection. Opening yourself up to new opportunities, that reflect your desired lifestyle and pace of work/life balance. (27:20)

    • Unsettled manifesto: being more than a travel company. It’s a process and philosophy for living: embracing the unknown and the uncomfortable. (32:30)

    • How Michael has dealt with and found tools to overcome anxiety. (42:40)

    • 70% of people quit a job within 18 months of an Unsettled travel experience. (47:40)

    • How to create your own reality. (57:30)

    • Michael’s affirmation that he comes back to at the end of every day: “Despite everything, today was a great day.” He has choice and agency to see today as a great day, despite what might have happened in it. (1:00:00)

    Pre-Europe Excitement (And Denver Discomfort)

    Pre-Europe Excitement (And Denver Discomfort)

I'm preparing for a month of travel, so in today’s episode I talk about the excitement and anticipation I’m feeling as I get ready to return to Europe!

There’s so many juicy feelings that accompany international travel- wildness, freedom, the bliss of waking up in a new city with no plans. I can’t wait for that.

However, I also share about a recent trip to Denver and how I felt a bit uncomfortable walking around there. Because of all the violence and instability in the USA, I don’t always feel safe here, and I sense this collective discomfort and tension.

There’s a sense of relief when I think about traveling to Europe and going to cities where I feel safe and be open. I share some of my travel plans, and I also share about my decision to take a small break from the podcast while I’m traveling.

Today’s episode is a little all over the place, but I hope you enjoy it.

    A few reflections:

Denver is great city, and Colorado is a beautiful place to be from. I know so many people who have built beautiful and fulfilling lives here. It's not my intention to criticize but rather observe my own experience. I always want to be honest about my journey and what feels aligned and comfortable and what doesn't. Many cities in the USA don't feel safe to me as a solo female- especially with increasing gun violence.

I mention the poverty in Denver- it's not that I want to shelter myself and not see poverty. (I spent many months teaching in the slums of Hyderabad, India.) I'm just particulary sentitive to the collective energy in these areas- it feel chaotic, unsafe, unstable, unhinged, and uneasy. I don't feel like I can relax; there is a need to stay vigilant and keep my guard up in places like this in order to keep myself and my energy safe. Ultimately, I don't want to live in a place where I can't feel safe, relaxed, and open.

As an empath, I realize the collective and the state of those around me greatly affect me and my well-being. This (say, a walk around downtown Denver) probably affects me more than it does most people. But maybe you can relate to that as well.
