7 Journaling Techniques That Can Change Your Life

7 Journaling Techniques That Can Change Your Life

In my twenties and early thirties, I was a regular journaler. Several years ago, however, I stopped journaling almost entirely because I wasn’t getting anything out of it anymore. But my guest has helped me see that my problem wasn’t with journaling itself, but that I had gotten into a journaling rut, and he’s introduced me to some new ways to journal that have inspired me to get back into the practice.

Campbell Walker is an illustrator, animator, podcaster, and YouTuber, as well as the author of Your Head is a Houseboat: A Chaotic Guide to Mental Clarity. Today on the show, Cam shares how journaling transformed his life and what it can do for yours. We discuss why it’s helpful to do a journaling brain dump and how to then move beyond that to incorporate different techniques that will help you get greater insight into the problems you’re facing and how to solve them. We unpack those techniques, which include how to journal to break mindset, conduct a lifestyle and habits audit, and quell anxiety. We also talk about an experiment Cam did where he only used the social media apps on his phone when he was posting something, and every time he got the itch to check social media for fun, he engaged in something he calls “microjournaling” instead. We end our conversation with how Cam’s journaling changed after he became a dad and his tips on making journaling a consistent habit in your life.

#416 The Truth About Stress, Belly Fat, Alcohol and Journalling & How To Tune Into Your Body & Mind with Neuroscientist Tara Swart

#416 The Truth About Stress, Belly Fat, Alcohol and Journalling & How To Tune Into Your Body & Mind with Neuroscientist Tara Swart

For today’s brand new episode, I’m pleased to welcome back the wonderful Dr Tara Swart. Tara is a neuroscientist, a former medical doctor & psychiatrist, a lecturer at MIT, an executive coach and author of the bestselling book, The Source. She also hosts the podcast Reinvent Yourself with Dr Tara.

If you’ve listened to my two previous episodes with Tara, you’ll remember her unique talent for using neuroscience and behavioural psychology to probe ideas, theories, and practices that many believe work, but we’re not sure why.

This insightful and often unusual episode takes a deep and meaningful look at stress - what exactly it is, what impact it has on health and how it predisposes us to storing fat. We also discuss the most effective ways to manage stress, the best ways to build resilience and the benefits of practices like journalling.

We really do cover a whole variety of different topics today including metacognition, the definition of spirituality, what exactly intuition and interoception are, and how we can use them to get to know our minds and bodies more intimately. We talk about rituals, the incredible power of creativity, beauty, and time spent in nature. And finally, we ask some big questions around the topic of death and consciousness, which Tara is increasingly drawn to studying.

If you’re someone who’s interested in alternative thinking and new ideas, but likes the reassurance of scientific backing, Tara’s warmth and wisdom will tick all your boxes. If you’re a sceptic - well, this conversation might just open your mind.

#413 How To Make 2024 Your Best Year: 3 Questions To Ask Yourself Each Day with Dr Rangan Chatterjee

#413 How To Make 2024 Your Best Year: 3 Questions To Ask Yourself Each Day with Dr Rangan Chatterjee

Today’s episode is a special episode that I have recorded all about the transformative power of journalling. Journalling is a practice that I’ve been recommending for many years. Doing it regularly can help improve sleep, lead to better decision making and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. It has also been shown to decrease emotional stress, make it easier to turn new behaviours into long term habits, improve the quality of our relationships and, ultimately, help us lead more mindful and intentional lives.

My hope is that this episode will help you understand the key benefits of journalling and some of the ways in which you can get started. The key - as with all new behaviours - is to experiment and find out what works best for you.

In order to celebrate the launch of my own journal ‘The 3 Question Journal’, I outline what I consider to be the three most impactful questions that you can ask yourself every morning and every evening. Answering these questions will take less than 5 minutes, but doing so can prove transformative. Journalling helps you step outside of your life, in order to reflect on your life. And so, whatever your current goals are, the path towards them becomes clearer.

Journalling is a practice that I myself do regularly and my hope is that this episode inspires you to start.

A Science-Supported Journaling Protocol to Improve Mental & Physical Health

A Science-Supported Journaling Protocol to Improve Mental & Physical Health
In this episode, I explain a specific writing protocol shown in hundreds of scientific studies to significantly improve immediate and long-term health. I explain how to implement this specific protocol, which takes only four days and 15-30 minutes per day. I also explain the mechanism for how the four-day writing protocol affects neuroplasticity (brain rewiring) and brain function in the short and long term. I explain how these brain changes positively impact our physical health, including our system's immune function and thus our ability to combat infections, improve sleep, reduce feelings of physical and emotional pain, lower anxiety, and bring about healing from traumas. This episode ought to be of interest to anyone seeking better mental and/or physical health through the use of brief yet highly effective science-supported protocols. Beautiful, Healing Words When the World Feels Overwhelming: An Inspiring Episode for Right Now

Beautiful, Healing Words When the World Feels Overwhelming: An Inspiring Episode for Right Now

In this important and special episode, you will hear the beautiful, profound, and comforting words that are needed in the world right now.

When I woke up this morning, I did not expect to have this conversation.

But, as I watched the news unfold, I felt overwhelmed and hopeless, seeing a world that feels like it’s spinning out of control.

I thought to myself, "If I could talk to one person right now who could give you and me the love, support, and tools that help when you feel scared of the world around you, who would it be?"

I knew exactly who I wanted to talk to: Dr. Thema Bryant.

Dr. Thema Bryant is a scholar, minister, and tenured professor at Pepperdine University. A clinical psychologist who completed her postdoctoral studies at Harvard Medical Center’s Victims of Violence, Dr. Thema Bryant is the current president of the American Psychological Association and has published multiple best-selling books.

Every time I listen to her speak, she radiates so much love, perspective, and soft empowerment to help you face whatever is going on in your life.

I seriously feel my soul exhale whenever she speaks, and that’s why I wanted her to talk to you and me through this difficult time.

Whether you’re watching tragedy play out in the news or things are happening for you globally, nationally, locally, or even in your own living room, this is a conversation that will help you.

You don’t have to be directly impacted by what is going on out there in the world to feel the uneasiness and overwhelm inside you.

Please take 29 minutes and join me and Dr. Thema Bryant for this incredibly powerful message:

Even when things seem so dark, there is still a light inside of you and me, and there are ways in which you can connect with it, no matter what is happening.

This conversation is packed with meaning and simple things to do if you’re feeling overwhelmed or are in the middle of turmoil within your own community, relationships, or family.

Dr. Thema will guide you in navigating your feelings.

She’ll explain to you with reassurance and wisdom how exactly to process what is going on, while still staying connected with yourself.

If you don’t feel like you have a soft or safe place to land or don’t know how to sort through overwhelming feelings, this conversation will feel like a gift.

Thank you for being here for this and for sharing it with everyone you know and love.

Because everyone is in it right now, and we all need some guidance.

    Xo, Mel

How To Grow Your Self Awareness: The Key To Understanding Yourself

How To Grow Your Self Awareness: The Key To Understanding Yourself

Knowing yourself is based in the past, learning yourself is based on the present. We’re trying to go from the present, into the future and part of that is doing the work to discover who you are, and how you can improve.

Welcome to today’s episode of The Mindset Mentor Podcast where today we are diving deep into the transformative power of self-awareness and how it can actually be the ultimate superpower.

In a world filled with distractions, I believe that the most valuable gift we can give ourselves is the power of self-awareness. There’s a clear distinction between self-awareness and self-consciousness, which I’m going to explain in this episode.

Self awareness is such a superpower because it is like having a clear internal mirror that allows you to manage your emotions effectively.

Self-awareness is crucial to your personal development because it enables you to understand your emotions before they arise, giving you the tools to manage them. Today I’m going to give you practical steps to help you develop your self-awareness:

    1. Do More Reflective Practices: You can start with journaling as a way to explore both your conscious and unconscious thoughts. Our minds are complex, and journaling is an excellent tool to unravel them.
    2. Practice Meditation: I know meditating is difficult for so many people, but instead of looking at meditation as a state you’re trying to get to of “no thoughts”, instead realize that meditation is actually about sitting still in one place so that you can properly observe your thoughts, process them, and work through why they exist and what should be done about them.

You will learn more about yourself by observing your thoughts without resistance. Meditation helps you confront your mind and understand what's really going on beneath the surface.

    1. Become Thought Aware: Pay close attention to your thoughts. Emotions are often preceded by thoughts, and by acknowledging these thoughts when triggered, you can take steps to change your patterns moving forward.

How To Master Your Emotions: A Guide to Emotional Intelligence

How To Master Your Emotions: A Guide to Emotional Intelligence

Welcome to today’s episode of The Mindset Mentor Podcast. Today I’m diving deep into one of the biggest super powers that we as humans have…

In my opinion, it’s what separates us from any other specifies in the universe, and makes us human. I’m talking about your emotional intelligence.

If you don’t know what that is, emotional intelligence is the ability to manage BOTH your own emotions, and understand the emotions of the people around you so that you can better navigate through your entire life.

Trust me on this one, emotional intelligence is not just an “extra” skill set that you can develop for your life… but rather it’s one of the most fundamental skillsets that I believe you should care about mastering in order to thrive and survive through your life. (You’ll see what I mean by the end of this.)

#680: Richard Koch — Revisiting the 80/20 Principle, The Power of Optimistic Journaling, Studying History to Improve Investing, and The Grand Beliefs of Winners (Plus: The Toxic Beliefs of Losers)

Brought to you by Secureframe automated security and privacy compliance platform, Eight Sleep’s Pod Cover sleeping solution for dynamic cooling and heating, and Wealthfront high-yield savings account.

Richard Koch (@RichardKoch8020) is an entrepreneur, investor, former strategy consultant, and author of several books on business and ideas, including four on how to apply the 80/20 principle in all walks of life.

His investments have grown at 22 percent compounded annually over 37 years and have included Filofax, Plymouth Gin, Belgo, Betfair, FanDuel, and Auto1. He has worked for Boston Consulting Group and was a partner at Bain & Co. before joining Jim Lawrence and Iain Evans to start LEK, which expanded from three to 350 professionals during the six years Richard was there.

In 1997, Richard’s book The 80/20 Principle reinterpreted the Pareto Rule—which states that most results come from a small minority of causes—and extended it beyond its well-known application in business into personal life, happiness, and success. The book, rewritten in 2022, has sold more than a million copies, been translated into roughly 40 languages, and has become a business classic. It was named by GQ as one of the top 25 business books of all time. Richard’s latest book is Unreasonable Success and How to Achieve It

He has two upcoming books: 80/20 Beliefs, which identifies the very few beliefs in our lives that strongly influence what we do, and, therefore, the results we get, as well as 80/20 Daily, a collection of 365 short daily readings using the 80/20 philosophy to achieve the good life.

    Please enjoy!

How Emerson Can Help You Become a Stoic Nonconformist

How Emerson Can Help You Become a Stoic Nonconformist

When we think about Stoic philosophers, we typically think about the thinkers of ancient Greece and Rome, like Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. But my guest, Mark Matousek, says there was an incredibly insightful Stoic philosopher who lived on the American continent in more modern times: Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Matousek is the author of Lessons from an American Stoic: How Emerson Can Change Your Life, and today on the show, he shares how Stoicism and Transcendentalism overlap and how you can use Emerson's Stoic philosophy to become a nonconformist. We discuss the lessons you can learn from Emerson on developing self-reliance, embracing the strengths of your weaknesses, trusting your own genius instead of imitating others, gaining confidence from nature, compensating for the difficulties of relationships through the joy of deeper connections, living with greater courage, and more.
