Adapting to Climate Change: Exploring America's Leadership in Climate Resilience with Battelle

In episode 201 of America Adapts, I'm partnering with Battelle on their Innovations in Climate Resilience Conference, ICR24, taking place April 22-24th in the heart of Washington, DC. ICR24 isn't just any conference; it's a convergence of minds, bringing together environmental professionals, scientists, researchers, students, and key leaders from the White House, Department of Energy, National Labs, Department of Defense, industry, and academia. In this episode, we have a lineup of expert guests who will delve into the core of climate resilience. First up is Justin Sanchez, a technical fellow at Battelle. Justin will ground us in Battelle's unique approach to resilience and share insights into their early work in climate adaptation. He'll also provide an exclusive preview of what to expect at ICR24. Following Justin, we're joined by John Conger of Conger Strategies. With extensive experience working in Congress and holding senior leadership positions at the Department of Defense, John will shed light on the crucial role of the public sector in climate resilience. We'll round out the discussion with Katie MacDonald from the group Tailwind, who will illuminate the strides the private sector is making in the adaptation space. It's been a long time coming, and Kate will share some encouraging news and experiences from the forefront of private sector innovation. America has been a frontrunner in climate adaptation, and our three dynamic guests today will energize you with insights into the amazing developments happening right now. We'll continue this conversation at ICR24, and for more details about the event, be sure to check out the show notes for relevant links. We’ll see you in DC!

Samantha Miller on getting out of your head, building resilience and finding humor in everything.

Samantha Miller on getting out of your head, building resilience and finding humor in everything.

Happy 2024! It was a pleasure to kick off Season 2 of Balanceness with my confidante and sister Samantha Miller, MSW, RSW, a clinical social worker, who has worked in a number of settings including chemical dependency, partial hospitalization programs, and private practice. Samantha currently provides hospice and bereavement services, which entails bereavement support and clinical services for those with a life limiting illness and joins us to shed some light on the levity and beauty of her work.

When thinking about how to kick off this season’s podcast, I couldn’t think of a better topic than resilience. I don’t know about you, but I never emerge from the winter break feeling refreshed. The pre-holiday end of season work sprint, gift buying, traveling, kids out of childcare, and extended time away from creature comforts with extended family leaves me feeling drained. I feel conflicted about stepping into the new year with a new ‘tude when all I really want to do is return to homeostasis. So, how better to discuss my bounceback than with someone with an expertise in trauma treatment and mindfulness interventions? In this episode, we discuss the overlap of balance and resilience, how childhood experiences shape our coping mechanisms and the practice of getting out of our heads. This episode is great for anyone who needs a reminder to put one foot in front of the other, to drop the judgment (of yourself or others) and to recognize, name and laugh in the face of adversity. I hope this episode gives you some inspiration and tools for conquering 2024. Happy listening.

In episode 186 of America Adapts, Doug Parsons hosts Madison Condon, a law professor at Boston University School of Law. Doug and Madison explore the critical role climate models play in adaptation planning, but more importantly, their capabilities, what they can and can not do,.  Madison explains what is the "climate industrial complex’ and if there’s a need for the government to step in and regulate this emerging sector.  Also, should these climate analytic and modeling companies be liable for making bad projections…and how can you hold a company liable for a projection that’s set decades in the future?  Madison also critiques a recent Federal Reserve Bank attempt at stress testing the climate risks for the banking sector.  Great conversation on the critical topic of climate modeling!

    • The Federal Reserve “is a climate laggard.”
    • What are climate models and what can and can’t they do?
What is the “climate industrial complex”?
    • How right, is “right” enough when it comes to climate models?
    • Could climate analytic/modeling companies be held liable for bad projections?
    • The role of climate analytic groups like First Street Foundation.
    • Do we need a “National Climate Service” to provide basic climate data?
    • Do adaptation planners understand the role of climate models in their work?

    Taking Flight: The Pilot

    Taking Flight: The Pilot

Welcome to the inaugural episode of "Berry Unearthed: Rooted in Resilience"! Jump into this spontaneous adventure as hosts Phil and Crystal dive into podcasting on a whim. With no roadmap or preparation, we’re navigating the uncharted territory of our personal narratives and societal musings. Join us as we test the waters, laughing at our missteps and celebrating our triumphs. It's raw, it's real, and it's the start of an exciting journey of resilience and self-improvement. Come along for the ride as we lay the groundwork for what's to come. This is just the beginning!

Resilient Rebels: The Power of Pioneering Ideas

Resilient Rebels: The Power of Pioneering Ideas
The Power of Pioneering Ideas is a podcast that celebrates having independent thought that builds community and connects with others while planting a seed for change.

I challenge conventional thinking and forge my path, which has sometimes become a way of life even when I don't mean to. If I see a need, I naturally want to fill it.

The need I saw was one of my own and one in my community. Being new and starting life over, I repeatedly questioned myself on who I was to step into this role of leading and bringing change to an area I was still familiar with.

A lot of people questioned the same. I dove in and went for it anyways. Because I realized that not all conversation in every pocket is the same, most of which created a divide because, at its core, the outward messaging was!

"Better Together" or "Build Back Better" "Let's Be Great Again"..... Oh, the tag lines with no substance or action to back them up. There are a lot of opinions, a lot of fighting, and ALOT of separation and division.

How overwhelming! No wonder it is easier to say, nope... I'll be over here....
But, over there is not where change happens; collaboration occurs, and innovation develops. Over there is not where a pioneer thrives...

I share my story of overcoming obstacles, navigating resistance, and making a meaningful impact in building community through a FB group and real life.

It is essential to understand that it will sometimes come with friction or discontent when you do anything different. Still, if we remain in the place of discomfort long enough, we naturally will either seek a way to run from it or seek a way to overcome it so it doesn't rechallenge us. That is how we grow and make an impact even better!

Lean into your pioneering ideas.... Go against the grain and plant the seeds in the soil you turn....
You never know what will grow from it. Whether it's around you or within you.

Beauty in the Shitshow - 15

On this episode we discuss a phone interview I had with a University Student back East about what worries me most about the future of our children. I give my top 3, and they are 1. Trauma, 2. Addiction and 3. Participation Trophies. We go over each one discussing them, We talk numbers and statistics. We talk about what the biggest challenges currently are for our children. Then we talk about solutions and what can we do to change the trajectory. "We spend too much time preparing the road for our children, instead of preparing our children for the road". Ponder on that. We would like to hear your thoughts on what worries you most about the future of our children. Write us at gossettllc@gmail.com

Mangroves for Community and Climate: Adapting in Harmony with Nature at WWF

Mangroves for Community and Climate: Adapting in Harmony with Nature at WWF

In episode 179 of America Adapts, I’ve partnered with World Wildlife Fund to learn the critical role mangrove forests play in coastal adaptation and the work WWF is doing with their Mangroves for Community and Climate project.   You’ll hear how WWF is applying its three core adaptation strategies:  ecosystem-based adaptation, nature-friendly adaptation, and climate-smart conservation. We journeyed to the Yucatán in Mexico to speak with mangrove experts from around the world - Mexico, Madagascar, Colombia, Fiji, Australia and the US – all coming together to share their expertise and knowledge to help mangroves persist in a changing climate. WWF is working to conserve mangroves around the world through various initiatives, including the development of a climate-smart mangrove restoration decision support tool. Finally, we’ll hear how WWF’s Environment and Disaster Management and Climate Crowd programs are helping communities adapt to climate change while valuing and reducing pressure on the critical ecosystem services that mangroves provide. It’s an epic size episode focusing on a critical species for adaptation!

    Topics covered:

    • Learn about WWF’s three core strategies for adaptation.
    • What WWF is doing to conserve mangroves globally.
    • What is the climate-smart mangrove restoration decision support tool.
    • Results of the Mangrove Workshop in Merida, Mexico.
    • How mangroves help reduce risk to coastal flooding and storm surges.
    • What happens to mangroves following a disaster?
    • Some research in Florida, surprisingly, says in some cases mangroves may do more harm than good when we build out in front of them.
    • Do people generally see value in keeping mangroves intact for other reasons besides coastal protection.
    • What is WWF’s Climate Crowd program.

    86. Tyrone Mathurin: Driven to succeed
Tyrone Mathurin talks to host Sue Stockdale about being a racing driver in Team BRIT, which aims to become the first ever all-disabled team to race in the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race – the most iconic endurance sportscar race in the world.

Whilst riding his motorbike in 2005, Tyrone crashed which caused four nerves to be torn from his spinal cord. During surgery to reattach the nerves, doctors were unaware of a hematoma putting pressure onto his spinal cord and a week later he awoke from an induced coma, paralysed. Fast forward to 2022, and Tyrone is behind the wheel at the Silverstone circuit in a specially adapted BMW 118, where previously he had watched Moto GP as a spectator. Tyrone talks about his life growing up, how he endured the challenge of being paralysed, and how he became a racing driver in Team BRIT.

'My nerves detached from my spinal cord, which caused my right arm to not move'.

'It was a long road to the beginning of my recovery and I was in intensive care for three months'.

'There wasn't a support system there to help you through it, I had to do it myself'.

'I met a guy who was in a wheelchair and he gave me the inspiration to not give up- to work hard and you can get through it'.

'I'd never thought I would be actually in the pits at Silverstone doing motor racing'.
