Authentic Grief: Finding Meaning In Your After

In this series of podcasts we want to address the topic of grief. Grief is something we all experience so we want to take an authentic look at this shared experience.

David Kessler wrote a book as a 6th stage of grieving titled Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief.

We will be recording this podcast series as an overview to this book and be inviting you to a conversation about grief and how we can approach it through meaning.

    What is Grief?

Grief is the response to the loss of something deemed important or essential, particularly to the loss of someone or something to which a bond or affection has been formed.

Grief is something in our culture that we often don’t know how to approach. And until its on happening to us or someone we love. we typically don’t like to think about death or talk about it.

The Original Five Stages of grief by Kubler-Ross:

    1. Denial - This isn’t happening to me
    2. Anger - Why is this happening to me?
    3. Bargaining - What can I change to stop this happening to me?
    4. Depression - There isn’t anything I can do to stop this happening to me.
    5. Acceptance - I take this for what it is even if I don’t want it.

The 6th stage proposed by Kessler is Meaning.

What does meaning look like? It can take many shapes, such as finding gratitude for the time they had with loved ones, or finding ways to commemorate and honor loved ones, or realizing the brevity and value of life and making that the springboard into some kind of major shift or change. (Pg. 3)

Ultimately, meaning comes through finding a way to sustain your love for them after their death while you’re moving forward with your life. (Pg. 7)

Thoughts that may guide in understanding meaning: (Pg. 7)

    1. Meaning is relative and personal.
    2. Meaning takes time. You may not find it until months or even years after loss.
    3. Meaning doesn’t require understanding. It’s not necessary to understand why someone died in order to find meaning.
    4. Even when you do find meaning, you won’t feel it was worth the cost of what you lost.
    5. Your loss is not a test, a lesson, something to handle, a gift, or a blessing. Loss is simply what happens to you in life. Meaning is what you make happen.
    6. Only you can find your own meaning.
    7. Meaningful connections will heal painful memories.

Love and grief are inextricably intertwined. Love and grief come as a package deal. If you love, you will one day know sorrow. (Pg. 9)

The Right Time & Place with Eric Johnson part 2

When God Says No ~ Eat Cake

When God Says No ~ Eat Cake

A few years ago, we found ourselves in a situation where God's answer was a resounding no. At the time, it was tough to comprehend, and honestly, it left us feeling confused and maybe a bit disheartened. But, as we revisit that season today, we want to share how God's nos can lead to something beautiful and how His plan, even when it seems unclear, is always perfect.

We hope that this episode encourages you!

When gratitude comes to mind, we tend to focus on the positive aspects of our lives that bring us joy and fulfillment. But have you ever contemplated whether the true key to fully embracing life lies in being grateful for everything, including the challenges and hardships we encounter? I invite you to listen to this podcast, which delves into this idea and explores the potential for connecting more deeply with ourselves and those around us by perceiving every experience as a gift -- a chance to learn, gain wisdom, and grow. By embracing all aspects of our lives with gratitude, we may unveil the genuine essence of our humanity.

    Areka's Abortion

    Areka's Abortion
Well, the title sort of gives it away, huh? This week to acknowledge the 1-year overturning of Roe v. Wade, Areka is sharing her abortion story. Not only as a way to stand in solidarity with the over 66,510 people who have not been able to get legal abortions in their home state since the overturning but especially those who had to seek their choice through dangerous means. Bodily autonomy is under attack and we will not stand silent here on A Lot to Cover.

    “The Sacred Power of Goodness”

    “The Sacred Power of Goodness”

When I read the first few pages of Tiny Beautiful Things — a compilation of letters from Cheryl Strayed’s advice column, Dear Sugar — I immediately knew it was going to be healing. This wasn’t a surprise. Everyone who reads Cheryl’s writing knows she’s poetic. Still, Tiny Beautiful Things is different. As I read the letters sharing people’s deepest yearnings and sorrows, the book’s lesson quickly became clear: Being human is messy. Our job is to find the beauty in it.

Whereas I’ve long resisted that complexity, Cheryl’s compassionate responses encouraged me to accept it. Still, relinquishing control left me with even bigger questions… How do we live with our grief and suffering? What makes love last? How do we rise up as our better selves? Fortunately, we explored them in today’s episode.

Her wisdom on self-forgiveness reflects the invitation of our conversation…

“To see ourselves with a sense of that wholeness, to sit by the river and let go of the bad things we did, allows us to see others for their wholeness too, and forgive them as well.”

In illuminating the freedom of “allowing what’s true to be true,” Cheryl guides us to that river. I hope her words are as healing for you as they’ve been for me.

Finding God in the Midst of Tragedy

Today on the show, author, K.L. Gilchrist joins me to share her journey through tragedy and learning to lean on God. K.L. talks about losing her daughter and what she's done, and continues to do, to gather strength, comfort and rest from our Heavenly Father. She also gives us 4 crucial steps to help us walk through grief. I love K.L.'s passion for Jesus and how she knows that without a relationship with God, she would've never been able to experience peace in the midst of her grief. I just know you're going to love my conversation with her just as much as I did. So grab those earbuds and your favorite beverage and join me for Finding God in the Midst of Tragedy.

Grieving Your ADHD Brain (Season 2, Ep. 2)

Grieving Your ADHD Brain (Season 2, Ep. 2)

For many people, adjusting to an ADHD diagnosis is very much like grieving the loss of a loved one.  We move through phases of shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance and hope, all normal processes that readily apply to learning to live with ADHD.

Listen as Lacy discusses these stages of grief and what it looks like for so many of us with ADHD when we similarly grieve our ADHD brain.  She shows how 2 Corinthians 7:11 leaves us with perhaps the most important purpose, that God often will use any grief (including over ADHD) to produce a fervor in us to return to devotion of Him.

    Foundational Scripture:

For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. 2 Corinthians 7:11, ESV

    What leads to lasting happiness?

    What leads to lasting happiness?

The first lesson I learned in The Greater Good Science Center’s Science of Happiness course is that I had the wrong definition of happiness.

Happiness isn’t solely our positive states, we learn from Science Director Dr.Emiliana Simon-Thomas. It’s feeling content within our whole human experience, which of course, includes emotions like grief and sadness.

What’s the most enduring way to cultivate it?

Her research continually leads to the same destination: Connection.

‘We often measure life satisfaction by asking: Have I been successful enough? When the real question is: Who am I in relationship to other people?’

We explore this question in our conversation; Examining it through the lens of meaning and belonging, compassion and forgiveness. The Science of Happiness course is free and an inspiring journey to embark on. Consider beginning with Dr.Simon-Thomas’ episode and taking the class with a loved one.
