    Surviving Being Suicidal

    Surviving Being Suicidal

If you listened to our last episode with Pippa, you’ll know that this month we’re opening up the conversation around suicide and hearing from people with firsthand experiences of it; whether they’ve lost someone to suicide or have considered suicide themselves.

In this episode we’re hearing from Joshua, a young guy from New Zealand who suffered depression as a teen and came to the point of wanting to end his life. Joshua shares vulnerably with us about his thoughts at the time, including walking us through what was meant to be his ‘final day’ and sharing about the letter he wrote to farewell friends and family.

Through it all, Joshua’s story is one of hope. Thanks to a somewhat miraculous intervention, Joshua is still with us today and is transparent about his grappling with God and his mental health since that day. We’re grateful for his story, and grateful that he is around to share it. We hope that Joshua’s story will not only help those of us who have considered suicide to feel less alone, but also equip us all to better understand and spot the signs that someone we know might be at risk.

    --

If you have questions about suicide or want to explore this topic more, we have a new page of Suicide Resources that will help you unpack the main theological thoughts on suicide, look at where we see it in the Bible, hear from others who have lost someone to suicide or attempted themselves, and learn how to help those who might be struggling. On our blog you can also read 6 Ways to Support Someone Struggling With Suicidal Ideation and How to Create a Suicide Safety Plan.

    Losing a Son to Suicide

    Losing a Son to Suicide

The topic of suicide is so often hidden away or only talked about in hushed conversations. But with all the fear and stigma surrounding it, those who might be struggling with suicidal ideation or the pain of losing someone to suicide run the risk of feeling like they’re alone; and here at Anxious Faith, we’re working to stop that.

This month, as part of opening up the conversation around suicide, we’re hearing from Pippa, a mother of two living in Newcastle, Australia. Four years ago, Pippa’s faith was challenged as she and her husband dealt with their teenage son’s deteriorating mental health. Sadly, they lost that son to suicide.

Pippa is raw and honest as she shares her family’s story of unimaginable grief and pain, but she also encourages us that God is no less with us in the messiness of life. Four years on, Pippa says her pain is still as deep, but that she’s been able to see glimpses of colour creeping back into her life, and though it’s still a journey of daily rebuilding her trust in God, Pippa maintains that He is good.

Our team, as well as Pippa and her family, pray that God will speak to you through this powerful episode. If you have questions about suicide or want to explore this topic more, we have a new page of Suicide Resources on our website that will help you unpack the main theological thoughts on suicide, look at where we see it in the Bible, hear from others who have lost someone to suicide or attempted themselves, and learn how to help those who might be struggling.

    S4.15| Suicide: Let’s Have a Conversation.

    S4.15| Suicide: Let’s Have a Conversation.

This is not your typical Monday morning episode from Affirming Truths.

This past week, I have been overwhelmed in my thoughts and feelings about suicide after hearing about TWitch’s suicide.  I am a suicide survivor. I have had a family member die from suicide.  And I have seen the world react in shock and mourning when suicide happens.

But what about before the suicide?  How are we showing up for the suicidal and depressed?  Why do we become judgemental, uncomfortable and avoidant to people’s pain but sorrowful in their death?  Let’s talk about it.

Turning the suicide tide in Africa

Turning the suicide tide in Africa

Africa is battling a suicide and mental health crisis. According to the World Health Organization, the region has the highest number of suicide cases in the world with around 11 people per 100, 000 dying by suicide each year. The region is also home to six of the ten countries with the highest incidence of suicide.

In this episode of Africa Science Focus, we hear from Kenyan resident Philis Mwatee about the pain of losing a dear friend to suicide. Florence Baingana, WHO regional advisor on mental, neurological and substance abuse, highlights the risk factors affecting Africans. And clinical psychologist Gladys Mwiti from Oasis Africa, a trauma centre, says Africa must invest in stronger support structures.

    088 Jonas Ketterle

    088 Jonas Ketterle

Jonas crafts unsweetened ceremonial grade cacao that is used in cacao ceremonies around the world. He hosts a cacao ceremony monthly with his men’s circle, during which they drink cacao and then practice embodied wrestling. He also regularly teaches how to stone grind fresh cacao paste from the bean using a traditional metate. After first encountering sipping chocolate in Oaxaca Mexico in 2012, Jonas founded the bean to bar dark chocolate company, Firefly Chocolate, in 2014, with the mission of inspiring awe and wonder through cacao. Always with a focus on health, he initially launched 85% dark chocolate in a variety of flavors, sweetened with low glycemic coconut sugar. He also pioneered a bio-regional wild harvested chocolate bar, celebrating bay nuts, a food used by the native peoples of the SF Bay Area.

Jonas’s engineering know-how keeps all the tools running at Ora Cacao. He actually built or hacked most of them with his combined mechanical, electrical, and software background. Previously, in his roles as Imagineer at Greenlight Planet and engineering lead at Fenix International, he worked on providing affordable solar energy to disadvantaged rural communities, mostly in India and East Africa. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Stanford University, where his favorite classes were in the machine shop, and where he studied energy efficient buildings with professor Gil Masters. As a first generation American originally from Germany he received the prestigious Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for his graduate studies.

Jonas studied permaculture and nature awareness at the Regenerative Design Institute, and has lived in ecovillages and cooperative houses for the majority of the last ten years. He loves cycling and backpacking, and has cycled the Alps and across the San Juan Islands, thru hiked the John Muir Trail, and summited Mt. Shasta and Mt. Ritter. He spends many months each year sleeping outside directly on the earth and he loves harvesting his own spring water and traveling to soak in hot springs. He currently lives in Sebastopol in a dome on ten acres.

He hopes to meet you one day and share in the awe and wonder of being alive while sharing gratitude and intention over a frothy morning cacao drink!

Ep. 652 - Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation | Steve Taylor

Ep. 652 - Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation | Steve Taylor
11-22-21 Allen Cardoza Interviews Steve Taylor
    http://answers.network
    http://www.www.StevenMTaylor.com

Why do some people who experience the worst that life has to offer respond not by breaking down but by shifting up, into a higher-functioning, awakened state? And perhaps more importantly, how can we emulate their transformations?

Over many years of observing and studying the phenomenon of life-changing awakening through extreme suffering, psychologist Steve Taylor coined the term “transformation through turmoil (TTT).” He calls individuals whose struggles lead to a dramatic shift into a new, expansive identity - “shifters”. In his new book, Extraordinary Awakenings: When Trauma Leads to Transformation, he shares dozens of amazing stories of individuals who “woke up” to profound transformation following bereavement, deep depression, suicide attempts, addiction, military combat, imprisonment, or other intense encounters with mortality.

“It is tremendously moving to hear accounts from people who have been to the furthest extremes of loss and suffering, who have faced the most desperate and desolate predicaments that human beings can possibly experience,” writes Taylor.

Along with the amazing stories of “shifters” he shares throughout the book, Taylor uncovers the psychological processes that help explain these miraculous awakenings. Join us as Taylor highlights a number of lessons and guidelines that offer readers hope and guidance to call on during their own struggles.

Ep. 646 - Teens4Teens Help: Innovative Peer-to-Peer Platform for Young People Seeking Recovery

Ep. 646 - Teens4Teens Help: Innovative Peer-to-Peer Platform for Young People Seeking Recovery
1-4-21 Allen Cardoza Interviews Jeff, Kathy & Kara Long
    http://answers.network
    https://www.teens4teenshelp.org/

Teens 4 Teens Help is comprised of a group of young people who faced (or are facing) serious mental health challenges—who choose recovery. On this unique peer-to-peer platform, teens and young adults share their stories on the most important topics facing their generations today including depression, eating disorders, anxiety, coping with COVID, suicide prevention, and more.

The founders of Teens 4 Teens Help, Jeff and Kathy Long, started their journey when they admitted their daughter into a Residential Program for the treatment of an eating disorder. It was a bumpy road with many twists and turns filled with many revelations and tools that they learned could facilitate recovery.

The most powerful of these tools was when their daughter spoke at a high school with her treatment center for the 2nd time. She was informed by a student that it was because of her story the year before, he did not go through with his plans to commit suicide, and reached out for help instead.

Jeff share that this is a project of love with the knowledge that teens are fairly inseparable from their internet connections, they realized that a peer-to-peer platform was the best way to reach the most people. He continues that their mission is to become the largest movement of its kind that will positively impact the lives of thousands of teens and their families across the country and globally.
