The prevalence of autism has risen a shocking 400% in the last twenty years. Increased awareness and diagnosis are one piece, but there are also so many other factors to consider. The hopeful news is that we’re seeing a shift paradigm in how we view and treat autism, with some truly amazing improvements possible. I’m thrilled to welcome Dr. Suzanna Goh, a board-certified pediatric behavioral neurologist, behavioral analyst, neuroscience researcher, Rhodes scholar, and author.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Shaking things up around the autism paradigm (1:57)
    • The connection between the brain and mitochondria (6:04)
    • Can autism be reversed? (7:00)
    • The biggest mistake made in autism (10:10)
    • What creates the inflammatory fire in the autistic brain? (15:20)
    • The role of diet in autism treatment (19:17)
    • Functional tests for assessing brain function and how to best support kids with autism (26:30)
    • Mitochondrial dysfunction and autism (28:30)
    • "Magnificent Minds" - A book on autism by Dr. Suzanne Goh (34:57)

Using a whole-child approach and investigating the intricate connections between metabolism, mitochondrial function, and nutrition we can better understand what types of support autistic children need most. I hope you’ll listen in to learn more.

    285. Looking Back - Looking Forward

    285. Looking Back - Looking Forward

As we approach the 300 episode milestone, this special installment of BIC Talks - the last of 2023 - featuring V Ravichandar, honorary director of BIC, Raghu Tenkayala, Chief of Operations and Infrastructure and Vikram Bhat, current Joint Director, taking over as director from the first of January in conversation with Lekha Naidu, Programme Manager and Custodian of the podcast.

This episode features an informal chat - an exercise in looking back for insights and looking forward with an evolved vision as far as the podcast is concerned. In this two part episode, we also take an opportunity to look back at what Ravi, dubbed the patron of lost causes does best - think deeply about solving the city’s problems, with a quick look back at a session titled - Why is it so Darn Hard to Fix Bengaluru? -

Bengaluru appears to be a work in tatters. ‘Mohenjo Daro’ type excavations, ‘moon like’ craters and continuous road works are normalised. Traffic snarls are a daily occurrence. We think nothing of dumping the waste of a city of 11 million in villages of 5000 consigning them to everlasting misery. Come monsoon and there are inevitable flooding of low lying areas – if a Nostradmus like prediction is required, urban flooding is the doomsday scenario for Bengaluru given the rampant, unchecked growth with multiple violations.

The speaker despite the above gloomy outlook is a perpetual optimist despite tilting at ‘windmills’ for over two decades. His talk will focus on understanding the underlying reasons why fixing the city needs a herculean, holistic effort. That is a first step in figuring out how do we get out of the collective hole we are in.

This was originally part of a BHeard at BIC event that took place in March of 2022.

How To Balance Women's Hormones With Lifestyle And Diet

How To Balance Women's Hormones With Lifestyle And Diet

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Bioptimizers, and Paleovalley

Contrary to popular belief, women cannot follow the same health and fitness protocols as men and expect the same results. Unlike men, women in their reproductive years have specific hormonal considerations, and their rise and fall throughout the month impact everything from energy to focus, mood, metabolism, and the ability to adapt to good-for-you stressors like exercise or fasting. Meanwhile, perimenopause and menopause pose a whole other list of considerations to keep women feeling well.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Mindy Pelz and Dr. Sara Gottfried about why we need to prioritize teaching women about their hormones.

Dr. Mindy Pelz is a renowned holistic health expert and one of the leading voices in educating women about their hormonal health. She has empowered hundreds of thousands of people around the world to tap into their bodies' innate healing abilities through her “5-Step Approach,” which uses fasting, personalized nutrition, stress management, chemical detoxification, and lifestyle changes to optimize health and slow the aging process.

Dr. Sara Gottfried is a board-certified physician who graduated from Harvard and MIT. She practices evidence-based integrative, precision, and Functional Medicine. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University, and Director of Precision Medicine at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health. Her three New York Times bestselling books include: The Hormone Cure, The Hormone Reset Diet, and Younger. Her latest book is called Women, Food, and Hormones.

Simply put, autoimmune diseases are conditions where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues rather than a foreign molecule like bacteria, and they are a huge problem both in this country and worldwide. But there are many more autoimmune diseases that affect the nervous system, joints and muscles, skin, endocrine gland, and heart.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, Levels, and AlgaeCal.

We live in a country that claims to be based on science, goodwill, and policies intended to help people. But these things are often heavily influenced and manipulated by industry, particularly Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Ag, which have corrupted many institutions, politicians, professional associations, and research entities.

Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Marianne Willamson, candidate for President in 2024 and a good friend of mine, about her vision for how we can change our food system, economy, environment, and public health outcomes for the better.

Marianne Williamson is a political activist, author, non-denominational spiritual lecturer and New York Times bestselling author. Her career began in the 1980s when she became deeply involved with HIV/AIDS activism. A long-time champion for the LGBTQ+ community, she founded Project Angel Food to deliver meals to the homebound unable to shop or cook for themselves. To date, the charitable organization has served over 16 million meals. She also founded the LA Center for Living, the Manhattan Center for Living, and cofounded The Peace Alliance.

#394 A 102-year-old Doctor’s Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age with Dr Gladys McGarey

#394 A 102-year-old Doctor’s Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age with Dr Gladys McGarey

Aged 102 (and a half!) years, today’s guest is the oldest person I’ve welcomed onto the show. Dr Gladys McGarey is co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and author of the fantastic new book, The Well-Lived Life: A 102-year-old Doctor’s Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age.

Many people consider Gladys to be the ‘mother of holistic medicine’. For years now, she has been trying to spread the message that health is not just physical – it involves mental, emotional and spiritual elements in equal measure.

Her message is that living a long and healthy life isn’t about the right diet, or taking vitamins and supplements. Instead, it requires a shift in perspective. A long life is all very well, but what are you living for?

For many people today, finding one’s purpose in life feels like an optional extra when we’re busy working, raising children or caring for parents. It can be hard to know who we really are or what we want out of life. But Gladys insists we should still strive to identify our reason for getting out of bed every morning. And we should realise that all of life’s experiences exist to teach us something.

Gladys is a wonderful storyteller, who uses examples and anecdotes from her own, purpose-driven life to explain the secrets that she shares in her book. She reveals how the devastation of her husband asking for a divorce, when she was 70, eventually became her strength. Rather than stay a victim of heartbreak, she made a choice to move forward and help others. And that’s a common theme that comes up in this conversation – the fact that we always have a choice.

This is a wonderful, life-affirming conversation about the very essence of life and health. It was a real privilege and honour to talk to Gladys - I hope you enjoy listening.

Debunking depression theories, with Professor Joanna Moncrieff

Debunking depression theories, with Professor Joanna Moncrieff

Have you or someone close to you been affected by depression? Psychiatrist and academic Professor Joanna Moncrieff joins Liz on this episode of the podcast to ‘debunk’ the chemical imbalance theory of depression.

In this episode, Joanna covers her review of studies on Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), one of the main medications prescribed to those with depression. Her review concluded that there’s ‘no clear evidence’ that low serotonin causes depression in the first place.

Liz and Joanna discuss how anti-depressants may alter 'normal' mental states and their little-discussed side-effects, plus the role of nature versus nurture in depression. Joanna also reveals why we may need to demedicalise depression, and instead see it as an emotional reaction that needs to be understood rather than medicated.

38: Where to Start With Trauma in a Holistic Model?

38: Where to Start With Trauma in a Holistic Model?

“Once we know better and have the ability to be intentional about the process, either for ourselves or our clients, it has to be a holistic integrative approach and to start the opening up in a specific way.” We have talked a lot on this podcast about different ways to work on our stored trauma in the body, but the number one question is - Where do we start? Having been through my own personal journey of healing my body by addressing and releasing trauma, I learned the hard way that my body will let me know when what I’m doing isn’t helpful. It shows itself through relapses in fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, and heaviness. So through all of the different modalities to heal trauma and heal the body, How can we start healing in a holistic way, and not just attacking symptoms?

When does motor control come into play when someone has persistent shoulder pain?

Is it soft tissue related, a joint problem, or a neuromuscular repatterning issue?

    Or something else?

How does our nervous system adjust?

In this episode, we talk about the multiple sources of this person’s shoulder pain and how retraining his arm lift was the key to his recovery.

And we mean retraining, the right way.
