Dr. Robert Malenka: How Your Brain’s Reward Circuits Drive Your Choices

Dr. Robert Malenka: How Your Brain’s Reward Circuits Drive Your Choices
In this episode, my guest is Robert Malenka, MD, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford School of Medicine who has made numerous seminal discoveries of how the brain changes (neuroplasticity) in response to learning and in response to rewarding and reinforcing experiences. We discuss the brain’s several reward systems involving dopamine and serotonin and how these motivate us to seek out specific behaviors and substances. We discuss how these reward systems are modified based on context and our memories, and how they can be hijacked toward maladaptive drug seeking in addiction. We also explore how reward systems influence social connections, oxytocin and empathy and how that applies to our understanding of autism spectrum disorders. This episode should be of interest to those interested in neuroplasticity, social bonding, addiction, autism, learning and motivation. For the full show notes, visit hubermanlab.com. 108 - Still afraid of failing?

On this episode of The Time & Productivity Podcast for Entrepreneurs, I dive into the topic of fear of failure. I explore how our brain releases dopamine to incentivise improvement and how mistakes and hard times in business actually provide opportunities for learning and skill development. I discuss the importance of learning and implementing what I have learned to improve our skill set. Throughout the episode, I emphasize the idea that even when I lose in the entrepreneurial game, I still win because failures can be used as valuable lessons for personal growth. I discuss the negative impact of failures and how to overcome them through healing and seeking coaching or guidance. I also explore the mindset of viewing entrepreneurship as a means for personal growth and how this can help overcome the negativity associated with business failures or mistakes. I talk about the importance of consciously doing inner work and addressing triggers to find value and lessons in failures. Furthermore, I discuss how lessons from failures can be used to improve and grow in the future. I touch on the tendency for most people to quit after losing in a challenging game and the three reasons why some individuals continue to play despite the difficulties. I also tackle the reality that even established and successful businesses can suddenly go out of business, highlighting the parallels betIen entrepreneurship and gambling. I delve into the idea that setting up and running a business can be difficult and can result in pain and discomfort. Throughout the episode, our host Kirsty Knight shares her own experiences of mistakes and failures in her various businesses, highlighting how they have helped her develop better services, skills, and a stronger business overall. She acknowledges the personal difficulties associated with these experiences. Ultimately, I emphasize the importance of embracing failure as a crucial part of the entrepreneurial journey and the role it plays in learning and growth. I encourage listeners to detach their worthiness from success and focus on the journey, progress, and challenges of entrepreneurship. Join us on this episode as I explore the personal and professional impact of failure and provide insights and strategies for overcoming the fear of failing in your business.

Transcending the Dopamine Trap: The Neurobiology of Pain and Pleasure and How to Balance Your Life (Our Cultural Crisis Ep XVII)

Transcending the Dopamine Trap: The Neurobiology of Pain and Pleasure and How to Balance Your Life (Our Cultural Crisis Ep XVII)

Dopamine is the brain’s reward chemical, crucial for regulating human motivation, desire, and focus. Yet never in human history have so many dopamine-delivery vehicles (from sugar to social media to online shopping) been so pervasive. We live in a dopamine-glutted world. And the overabundance of dopamine creates continual pitfalls of over-indulgence and addiction all around us. In this episode, we explore the neurobiology of dopamine and, following the work of Dr. Anna Lembke, the mindbody’s pain-pleasure balance. Because understanding this principle and  engaging core practices to keep your life in balance can radically change you...and help change the world.

Tim takes TWiN through two studies on the role of dopamine: that syllables are natural units of spontaneous behavior used by the brain to structure action, and that mesolimbic dopamine release conveys causal associations but not reward prediction errors, thereby challenging the dominant theory of reward learning.

Making the Unconscious Conscious: How the Brain Works and How Knowing Can Change Your Life (World of Emotions, Part III)

When we think of the brain, what probably comes to mind (pun intentional) is our conscious thinking. And while our pre-frontal cortex and verbal processing is amazing, ninety-five percent of our intelligence is non-verbal, occurring outside of our conscious intelligence. In this episode we explore the “iceberg” model of brain functioning with its three layers (conscious, subconscious, and unconscious). And we explore how we can intentionally create space to receive the messages that our unconscious intelligence has for us. Because by bridging our conscious and unconscious, we can radically change our lives.

Leverage Dopamine to Overcome Procrastination & Optimize Effort

Leverage Dopamine to Overcome Procrastination & Optimize Effort
In this episode, I explain how dopamine dynamics — meaning changes and interactions between our baseline and peak levels of dopamine drive our cravings and sense of motivation. I also explain how to leverage dopamine dynamics to overcome procrastination. I cover behavioral, cognitive, nutrition-based and supplementation-based tools to optimize baseline and peak dopamine levels to ensure a persistently motivated state. I also discuss how to boost motivation when you are in a rut, why you might not want to stack behaviors/substances that spike dopamine and how to build and maintain a “growth mindset” for pursuing goals of any kind. Dopamine is an incredibly powerful neuromodulator involved in basic functions (e.g., hunger, romantic attraction, etc.) and feats of cognitive and physical performance; by understanding the dynamics of dopamine, listeners ought to be better positioned to overcome procrastination, maintain motivation, and improve confidence.
