'HOPE: PATHWAY TO POSSIBILITY' - Rev. Randy Lewis

'HOPE: PATHWAY TO POSSIBILITY' - Rev. Randy Lewis
The message was delivered on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION In the grand scheme of global challenges, wars, terrorism, and humanitarian, economic, and ecological crises, participating in local school board elections may seem insignificant. But as renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead once wisely noted, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." This sentiment underscores the profound connection between seemingly small actions and the potential for significant change. Drawing inspiration from Mead's words, Sunday’s message explores the idea that hope is not just a passive emotion but an active force, a tangible product of intentional, collective actions that contribute to the building of a better, more hopeful world for ourselves and future generations. Let's explore the pathways to possibility together. 'THE ART OF INTIMACY: SELF, STORY, AND UNIVERSE' - A service by Kelli McLoud-Schingen, Mariela Pérez-Simons, and Rev. Barbara Prose (Virtual Service)

'THE ART OF INTIMACY: SELF, STORY, AND UNIVERSE' - A service by Kelli McLoud-Schingen, Mariela Pérez-Simons, and Rev. Barbara Prose (Virtual Service)
The service was held on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Kelli McLoud-Schingen, Guest Speaker, Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister, and Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Our celebration of Women’s History Month continues. “Enlightenment is intimacy with all things.” —The Zen master Dogen (1200-1253), founder of the Sōtō school of Zen On this Sunday, as we delve into the concept of the Divine Feminine, we will be exploring how we can cultivate intimacy as a spiritual practice. Intimacy with our feelings, with the earth, with one another, with spirit, with the soul, with our heartbeat… and perhaps even with the virus itself. Because we already have the impulse to connect, intimacy allows us to move from division to wholeness… We are invited to get closer and closer until we realize that we are, in fact, not separate but a part of everything. 'BEING MINDFUL OF BEING WHITE' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service)

'BEING MINDFUL OF BEING WHITE' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service)
The message was delivered on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Talking about race and racism is often so painful, we want to avoid the conversation. Still, in the depths of our being, we understand that none of us will be free, until all of us are free. If we are white, that often means learning how to talk about race and how to listen to talk about race, without shutting down or acting out. This Sunday, holding a deep awareness of our own basic goodness, we will explore how becoming more mindful of being white leads to liberation. I hope you’ll join me as we explore a daily practice for freedom as a year-round response to our nation’s celebration of black history month. 'ANGELIC SERVICE: REMEMBERING HER WORK' - A sermon by Arthur F. Carter, Jr., Ph.D. (Traditional Service)

'ANGELIC SERVICE: REMEMBERING HER WORK' - A sermon by Arthur F. Carter, Jr., Ph.D. (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Arthur F. Carter, Jr., Ph.D., Guest Minister. DESCRIPTION Successful organizations, institutions, and movements often have visionary leadership. When these entities fail, onlookers frequently point to leadership as the locus of failure. While not the source of hierarchy, this tendency supports top-down views of the world. Many well-intended persons regularly evaluate success from top to bottom: how does the economy work for the wealthy; how do educational systems work for the majority of students with resources; how safe is our city for the mobile, the educated and the employed? This re-reading of Mark 14.3-9 suggests that the woman who anoints Jesus with perfume reminds us how dangerously susceptible we are to replicate the systems of oppression that we claim to denounce. Mark remembers this woman as an angelic worker; her presence and actions critique our prominent top-down approaches to identity-making and history-writing. The good news (Gospel), however, is that Jesus saw her, affirmed her work, and remembers her name; The good news (Gospel) is, thus, also that each day is our own opportunity to free her story from shackled, top-down mentalities, model her labor amidst unjust systems of oppression and exploitation, and commemorate those unnamed, un-titled angels [messengers] who sustain our pursuits of love, justice, and faith. 'SEEK YE (YOU) FIRST (MATTHEW 6:33)' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Humans are born into an ongoing personal and collective anxiety to experience their own natural divinity or "power" as a species. We often call this "seeking" God, seeking Source or seeking the Force. I like to refer to this Self Actualization. By nature we are seekers and survivalists, simultaneously. The two traits are inseparably connected and in some ways are powerfully identical. We all want to last forever or for as long as we can, adding years to life and life to our years. Let's learn to recover and recapture our divine DNA and release its fuller manifestation in, to, through and as us living out our immeasurable and immortal potential. 'SHAPING CHANGE' - A sermon by Rev. Yadenee Hailu (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION Octavia Butler, an accomplished and prophetic black, queer, American, science fiction writer proposed in one trilogy, god is change. And change is inevitable. From marginalized communities and people we have the vital opportunity to learn and remember skills of resilience, transformation, and healing to not only survive but shape change. Our power and hope is in how we practice shaping it towards our values rooted in liberation.  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

'QUEERING OUR COVENANTS' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Contemporary Service)

'QUEERING OUR COVENANTS' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 10, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Jesus was born into a closed, covenanted community and spent his years of ministry queering that covenant. Could members of the community work on the sabbath? Yes! Could their fellowship include women? Yes! Could their communities include sex workers and tax collectors? Yes! Were touch and intimacy allowed? Yes! The concept of covenant is powerful enough to create exclusive and inclusive communities. As our covenant here at All Souls expands and queers itself, we need tools to keep the circle whole. This Sunday, join me as we explore the power of apology and other tools to help us heal and return to and/or create right relationship. “When you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:23-24) SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

'SPIRITUAL TREASON: THE RISKS OF BEING A BORDER-WALKER' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)

'SPIRITUAL TREASON: THE RISKS OF BEING A BORDER-WALKER' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION There is a lot of talk of treason these days! It is a word that means betraying your country. By many it is considered one of the worst crimes someone can commit. What about spiritual treason? How does someone betray their spirit? What are the elements and consequences of spiritual treason? Is it a high crime or a misdemeanor? Perhaps the most important question is, “Are you being true to your own heart?”  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

'KEEP HOPE ALIVE' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson

'KEEP HOPE ALIVE' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 1, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION How should we try to relate to what feels totally “other?” Can black or ethnic “under-privilege” relate to white privilege, and vice versa? Does the Trading Places idea work in such a setting? How about humanist mindsets with super-human mindsets? Something is futile when it becomes incapable of producing any useful result—it’s pointless. We mustn’t allow any situation to reduce our hopes to such a state. In the words of Jessie Jackson, we must “keep hope alive.’” Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Here at All Souls, we aim to make it work best for all of us. 'WHO'S A HERETIC?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

'WHO'S A HERETIC?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Our church is being seen on “the big screen” in theaters across the country in the feature documentary, 'American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel'. It’s certainly nothing new for Unitarians and Universalists to be accused of heresy for embracing a scientific and evolutionary worldview and for asking questions about doctrines that are considered unquestionable by some. Yet, as one watches the film the question arises “Who are the heretics in this story?” The folks who tend to call progressive religious thinkers “heretics” are shown to have strayed quite far from the foundations of Christianity. In the spirit of our summer series, Trading Places, I will explore what it’s like to be on both sides of the heresy debate. I like to think if Jesus were to come back today he would feel more welcome at All Souls than at a lot of the churches that believe they are waiting for and working for Him. Whether you are a Humanist, a Buddhist, Jewish, UU, a progressive Christian or none of the above, you will find yourself in this story.

'REINVENTING OURSELVES' - A message by Steven L. Williams (Humanist Service)

'REINVENTING OURSELVES' - A message by Steven L. Williams (Humanist Service)
The message was delivered on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Steven L. Williams, Pastoral Care Chaplain, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION We humans frequently reinvent ourselves, living many lives in one lifetime, trading places with ourselves as we go. Our institutions (like churches) change as we do. With self and world constantly shifting, how do we know what is passing and what is permanent? How do we embrace what we are becoming, while also affirming what we once were? How do we stay connected to each other as we change? And, when it’s time to trade places again, how do we do so with grace and love for ourselves and others? I have traded places in this church many times in my journey from infant in the nursery to minister in the pulpit, and in the process, I’ve learned some valuable lessons about transition and adaptation. Please join me on June 23 for my last sermon as your Pastoral Care Chaplain, as I prepare to trade places once more. *Music: YAVE, Rick Fortner SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Growing up, my mother would tell us we were wonderful children because when she wasn’t feeling well, we were better behaved—as if we were taking care of her. My mother is now turning 88 and has been asking for help and guidance in ways she never has before. As we celebrate Mother’s Day—all the ways parents and grandparents care for children, we will also lift up how children care for their parents and grandparents. Bring a fresh flower to celebrate the mothers in your life.
