'BREAKING BREAD WITH THE DEAD' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

'BREAKING BREAD WITH THE DEAD' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar
The message was delivered on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION In the book: “Breaking Bread with the Dead” Alan Jacobs is concerned about children watching only stuff that is marketed to and for them, that is “fired like an arrow to their amygdala.” Stuff that was manufactured for their immediate effortless consumption. Rather than pushing them out of their comfort zone, experiencing some ambiguity and thematic density. He also writes about the importance for all of us of engaging the ideas, art and music of people from previous generations as a way of living with less anxiety in the present. One of the major ways that attending All Souls adds value to our lives is by regularly introducing us to ideas and music from the past in ways that improve our lives in the present. This Sunday we will recognize 71 new members who have joined All Souls over the last few months. The following quote from Jacobs’ book introduces my theme for Sunday and one of the reasons so many people are drawn to All Souls in these times. "…information overload—a sense that we are always receiving more sheer data than we know how to evaluate—and a more general feeling of social acceleration—the perception that the world is not only changing but changing faster and faster. What those closely related experiences tend to require from us is a rough-and-ready kind of informational triage." Triage—it’s a French word meaning to separate and sort—is what nurses and doctors on the battlefield do: during and after a battle, as wounded soldiers flow in, the limited resources of a medical unit are sorely tested. The medical staff must learn to make instantaneous judgments: this person needs treatment now, that one can wait a little while, a third one will have to wait longer, preferably somewhere other than the medical tent. To the wounded soldiers, this system will often seem peremptory and harsh, uncompassionate, and perhaps even cruel; but it’s absolutely necessary for the nurses and doctors to be ruthlessly brisk. They cannot afford for one soldier to die while they’re comforting one whose injuries don’t threaten his life. Navigating daily life in the internet age is a lot like doing battlefield triage. Given that what cultural critic Matthew Crawford calls the “attentional commons” is constantly noisy—there are days we can’t even put gas in our cars without being assaulted by advertisements blared at ear-rattling volume—we also learn to be ruthless in deciding how to deploy our attention. We only have so much of it, and often the decision of whether or not to “pay” it must be made in an instant. To avoid madness we must learn to reject appeals to our time, and reject them without hesitation or pity. 'WHAT CAKE WOULD JESUS BAKE?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service)

'WHAT CAKE WOULD JESUS BAKE?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 23, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION There is a long history of using the Bible to further discrimination. During the years of legalized slavery, many Christians used biblical explanations to justify their “right” to own slaves. Today religious freedom is, again, being weaponized as a tool of discrimination and political gain by those who want to deny the rights of LGBT people, women, Muslims, immigrants and others. As All Souls stands firmly on the side of freedom of religion, what do we have to say to those who are using such language in ways that harm others? As we continue to celebrate black history and our theme of “choosing freedom” let’s look to the past to see how we can live more freely and stand on the side of liberty in our own times. '#DoDemocracy' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Did you know that nearly 91,000 people were removed from the voter rolls in Oklahoma this past April? Jason Nichols, an instructor of political science at Northeastern State University, and former mayor of Tahlequah recommends we all double check our registration with our county election board to be sure we will able to vote in upcoming elections. One of the fundamental principles of our faith is the democratic process and the foundation of all our freedoms is our right to vote. Our justice team and ACTION leaders are inviting you to join with other local organizations and with congregations nationwide in voter registration, protecting voting rights and Get-Out-the-Vote drives. There are over 50 million people in the U.S.A. who are eligible to vote but who are not registered, and millions of registered voters who are infrequent voters.  This Sunday, on the same Sunday as the UUA launches their #VOTELOVE campaign, we will launch our own campaign here at All Souls, #VOTELOVEBEYONDBELIEF. I need to know I have done all I can do to make our democracy strong. Let’s learn how to do democracy together.  You’re invited! #DODEMOCRACY   #VOTELOVEBEYONDBELIEF  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

'WHERE DO WE COME FROM?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)

'WHERE DO WE COME FROM?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION We are in the third decade of the 21st century. We’ve split the atom, discovered quarks and the most microscopic of things. We have telescopes that let us peer into the ageless past. Yet there are still people who think that everything there is to know about life and spirituality and truth is written down in the Bible. Not just any people think this, but people at the highest level of our government and military and judicial systems who get their values from reading the Bible literally. As we enter the 2020’s, I want to explore how we can celebrate the marvel of creation and how we can save and preserve it, but I also want to discuss how we can live with people who think they know the Truth and who want to impress there version of it upon the rest of us? There is an anti-scientific and anti-intellectual movement that threatens our way of life. We need to pay attention to who is going on our school boards and city counsel and courts. We need to have a fire in our belly about what’s happening in this world. I feel some fire burning inside and out as we enter this new decade and I hope you do too. We need new ways to interpret religion and community and to figure out how to live upon this earth. It is great to be a part of this church at this time in this place – with you. 'SEEK YE (YOU) FIRST (MATTHEW 6:33)' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Humans are born into an ongoing personal and collective anxiety to experience their own natural divinity or "power" as a species. We often call this "seeking" God, seeking Source or seeking the Force. I like to refer to this Self Actualization. By nature we are seekers and survivalists, simultaneously. The two traits are inseparably connected and in some ways are powerfully identical. We all want to last forever or for as long as we can, adding years to life and life to our years. Let's learn to recover and recapture our divine DNA and release its fuller manifestation in, to, through and as us living out our immeasurable and immortal potential. 'ALL THERE IS' - A message by Yadenee Hailu (Humanist Service)
The message was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Duality is a terrifying loop to get stuck in, and yet when so much pain and tragedy is all around us it’s hard not to see all the evil. What else is there if not frustration and cynicism? How do we not swing from despair to apathy or tunnel vision based bliss? Let us uncover and practice together sustainable ways of being where in our lifetime overcomes evil.  *Music: Cynthia Simmons Taylor, vocal solo; Tommy Poole, saxophone; Nathan Eicher, bass; Chris Peters, drums; Rick Fortner, piano. 'WHAT'S GOOD (GOD) ABOUT EVIL, AND EVIL ABOUT GOOD (GOD)?' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)

'WHAT'S GOOD (GOD) ABOUT EVIL, AND EVIL ABOUT GOOD (GOD)?' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION I am intrigued with the scriptural passage that forbids us humans to eat from the tree (truth) of the knowledge (science) of both good and evil. Evidently, both were somehow created by the "Sky God" of Hebrew scripture, and yet everything "God" created is said in scripture to have been good. If this is true, even allegorically, that would mean evil is nothing more or less than good extorted, contorted, and distorted. Join me on Sunday, I will share my thoughts on the "good" or God in "evil" and the evil in "good" or God! What if they're not so much enemies, but cooperative friends? 'OVERCOMING THE ENEMY IN ME' - A sermon by Yadenee Hailu (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION Evil is in how systems and institutions build and repeat un-(w)holy roles for people. Evil that comes from within me, is when voices and expectations in myself perpetuate images and roles for myself which are (you guessed it) not whole. Let's make beautiful the art of healing- which is found in reclaiming worth, dignity, interconnection, and agency... again, again, and again.  SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

'ONE COMMUNITY, MANY PATHS' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)

'ONE COMMUNITY, MANY PATHS' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Some people want to understand how Humanists and Naturalists, Christians, Jews and Buddhists and people of multiple faiths and philosophies have created such a vibrant congregation together in the heart of the Bible Belt. It’s not always easy to explain, but I’ll give it a go on Sunday. It seems as if humanity is at a spiritual crossroads in which one fork leads to more fear and division and the other leads to more love and greater cooperation. In an effort to grow love and cooperation All Souls has discovered that in a pluralistic society different spiritual languages and styles of services are helpful to various people to open doors to an experience of wholeness and love beyond belief. With our summer series over, All Souls returns this week to three Sunday services. Each service provides a different spiritual language and style and yet in their own ways each lifts up enduring wisdom and offers love beyond belief. In whichever style or language, a primary aim of All Souls is to freely cultivate compassion, courage and connection in individuals and the human family. There will be a children’s story at the Traditional Service at 10:00 am. If you’ve been gone over the summer, Welcome Home! 'LIVE YOUR TRUTH' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)

'LIVE YOUR TRUTH' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION As we celebrate graduates this Sunday, there is something to be said about living our truth, post-graduation. High school grads will step into the world as their true selves, finding their way. Older grads will embark on their genuine paths. I charge our grads and community to stay fluid and flexible us room to grow and learn. Staying fluid and flexible enables us to influence and even change truth as we know it, experience it and perceive it. That’s what fascinates me most about the concept to truth. It’s malleable to our own understanding and relationship with it. 'POLARIZED PERSPECTIVES' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service)

'POLARIZED PERSPECTIVES' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service)
The message was delivered on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Something I read in the New York Times struck me as a truth we are facing today. “...toxic anonymity of virtual interaction through social media, ...we have the ingredients for a culture polarized by the perception that we are good and virtuous, while they are inhuman and evil.” Media culture today allows people to live in “thought silos” where their ideas are rarely challenged. Relationships between people with different opinions are becoming more rare and more difficult. As we say “Congratulations!” to our graduates, I ask myself if we've prepared them to be disrupters of this new paradigm? Have we taught them to listen and engage across social, political, and cultural differences? Let's talk about what role religious liberals can play in promoting freedom and open discourse. This is not a simple subject, but it may be central to the future of our democracy and our search for the truth. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 7, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Man’s inhumanities to man and human triumph over adversity are all on vivid and unforgettable display in Gilcrease Museum's current exhibition, Pulitzer Prize Photographs, from the Newseum in Washington D.C. (https://gilcrease.org/exhibitions/pulitzer/). If those photographs do not cause a person to ask big questions about life and death then perhaps nothing will. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 31, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Intern Minister of Hope Unitarian Church. DESCRIPTION In the art of letting go, we make space. 'JESUS WAS A FEMINIST... AND SO AM I!' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Just because the dominant factions of Christianity today perpetuate women’s submission and oppression does not mean it was the vision Jesus held out for the world. In fact, Jesus was way ahead of his time regarding women’s empowerment and liberation. Honestly, so was Muhammad at the founding of Islam. Why is it that these traditions have more often become tools of misogyny rather than forces for continued liberation? More importantly, what can we all do in these times to create a new way of gender equity and wholeness? I have some ideas and hope you will join me. 'WHAT MAKES A HERO?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)

'WHAT MAKES A HERO?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION I took my daughter to see her birth-mother and siblings in Alabama over the winter holiday. Along the way we stopped at the Laramie Hotel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. It was a painful and poignant journey through some of the sacred places of the Civil Rights era. In Birmingham I visited the 16th Street Baptist Church where a bomb killed four girls on a Sunday morning in 1963.  As we celebrate Dr. King’s birthday this year, I find myself inspired by this trip of a Caucasian father and his ten year old African American daughter in which we traveled to the heart of human inhumanity and heroism. All of our adult choirs and our children and youth choirs have prepared special music for the services. Some of our youngest have also prepared a beautiful medley of select lines from Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. Come be moved and inspired to live the dream!
