'SHAZAM: A WORD CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

'SHAZAM: A WORD CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar
The message was delivered on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION The words we choose to use and identify with can make a big difference. Words can destroy and create. Sometimes a single word can change everything. A single word can help or heal or hinder. It can hurt or harm or humiliate or humble us. It can also inspire, direct, and focus us. It can tap us into our power, purpose, and passion. 'A CHILD IS BORN, AGAIN' - Rev. Randy Lewis
The message was delivered on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION Here we go again. It’s Christmas time, and many churches will preach about the promised Messiah, the Child in the manger who is to become the Prince of Peace. In the Christian tradition, we are told that some 2,000 years ago, the angelic choir proclaimed “peace on earth and goodwill to all men.” And yet, year after year, again and again, peace remains elusive and short-lived at best, and goodwill is often overshadowed by self-interest and greed. Join us for the Christmas Eve morning service that will delve into the heart of the matter. Beyond the symbolic birth, we'll explore meaningful actions to foster lasting peace and goodwill. It's time to move beyond relying on miracles or babies to fix our problems. Let's embrace a message that resonates in our actions and is a catalyst for positive change! 'BAROMETER OF THE SOUL' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

'BAROMETER OF THE SOUL' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar
The message was delivered on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Recently, I came across the term "Fundamental Neighborliness." It is said to be a barometer of the soul and an indicator of the attitude of one’s heart. Generosity is one of life’s greatest joys to be able to share what we have to help someone else to have an opportunity to grow or experience life’s possibilities. Even in those times when we feel lacking, being able to share something can bring us alive. Most of us struggle in some ways with generosity. Some are too generous, and some are not generous enough. How can we balance our generosity so that it is a central component of our life’s satisfaction and a true expression of our love? 'THE SHADOW OF ATTICUS FINCH' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

'THE SHADOW OF ATTICUS FINCH' - Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar
The message was delivered on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION People who love the book “To Kill a Mocking Bird” are often shocked and disoriented if they read Harper Lee’s second book, “Go Set a Watchman,” when they discover that Atticus Finch ends up a member of the Ku Klux Klan. We don’t expect that one of the most noble heroes of American literature has a shadow side. Even more surprising is when they finish the second book and they still like Atticus despite his imperfections. We live in a time of “cancel culture.” Increasingly it seems people assume there is a purity or perfection that people must attain. Today one misstatement or misdeed or old photograph can cause a person to lose their job or get kicked off social media. We want our heroes to be flawless and increasingly we expect that in each other. Yet, people are complex and multidimensional and have the ability to evolve and change. The first week of October is Banned Books Week in America, and Harper Lee’s books are being banned across the country. However, I believe that together, they offer us an important lesson in being human. Atticus’ daughter Scout and son Jem came of age in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and perhaps the rest of us have a chance to come of age, in a way, from her second book. In accepting other people’s imperfections, we may be able to begin to accept our own. Or perhaps it’s the other way around. “Let the one without sin among you, cast the first stone…” John 8:7 SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS MESSAGE ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Instagram: All Souls Church Website:

'CHOOSING FREEDOM' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service)

'CHOOSING FREEDOM' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar (Humanist Service)
The message was delivered on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION Janis Joplin famously sang: “Freedom is just another word for ‘nothing left to lose.” I would contest that we all have things to lose. How do our attachments keep us from being free? What is the right relationship to have between freedom and attachment? How and when must we choose freedom over everything else? Taking inspiration in part from the remarkable story of Harriet Tubman, the worship team and I have created a service that we hope will prompt us all to live more freely. 'I'M TIRED OF THIS CHURCH' - A sermon by Rev. Carmen White-Janak (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 29, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Carmen White-Janak, Guest Minister. DESCRIPTION 2009 through 2019 closes out a decade. A decade where many travelers on their journey have chosen conformity over releasing old patterns, habits, and pathologies, leaving them tired and weary. My message, "I’m Tired of This Church," is an exploration of what’s possible when we give ourselves permission to step into greater possibility by not conforming to what’s always been. 'SEEK YE (YOU) FIRST (MATTHEW 6:33)' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Humans are born into an ongoing personal and collective anxiety to experience their own natural divinity or "power" as a species. We often call this "seeking" God, seeking Source or seeking the Force. I like to refer to this Self Actualization. By nature we are seekers and survivalists, simultaneously. The two traits are inseparably connected and in some ways are powerfully identical. We all want to last forever or for as long as we can, adding years to life and life to our years. Let's learn to recover and recapture our divine DNA and release its fuller manifestation in, to, through and as us living out our immeasurable and immortal potential. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald L. Davis, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION The Greek word for church is ecclesia. This word translates to "called out." So we know we are called out to do justice work. But we are also called out to listen for ways to be in covenant. Our covenant is recited every Sunday, but how are you doing covenant? 'THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING AN EMOTIONAL PERSON' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service)

'THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING AN EMOTIONAL PERSON' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. DESCRIPTION Preached by Rev. John Wolf at his church in Meadville, PA. “We need more anger. We need more hate today.” The Rev Dr. John Wolf continued, “We need more emotion today …. anger, hate, sympathy, love, compassion, and religious fervor.”
What was Rev. Wolf referring to? And why would he say such things? Join me for the next Throwback Sunday and hear a good word about human emotions. Certainly, it is the excess of emotion in religions and politics that brought many of us to All Souls, but a lack of emotion just as easily leads to evil, as an excess. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) creeps its way into our lives, let’s hear what Rev. Wolf had to say about being an emotional person and listen for its relevance in our lives today.   SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: WATCH THIS SERMON ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: or text LOVEBB to 73256 LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:

'OVERCOMING THE ENEMY IN ME' - A sermon by Yadenee Hailu (Traditional Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Yadenee Hailu, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION Evil is in how systems and institutions build and repeat un-(w)holy roles for people. Evil that comes from within me, is when voices and expectations in myself perpetuate images and roles for myself which are (you guessed it) not whole. Let's make beautiful the art of healing- which is found in reclaiming worth, dignity, interconnection, and agency... again, again, and again.

'WHEN THINGS FALL APART' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service)

'WHEN THINGS FALL APART' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose (Humanist Service)
The message was delivered on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION What do you do when things are falling apart? Forests burning in the Amazon and hurricanes blowing through and up from the Bahamas, stir up our anxieties and awaken our fears. Learning how to stay present with our emotions is one way to weather the storms of our times and our personal lives. When we accept that there’s no place to run to, we can learn to stay present to what is, and find freedom and joy in the here and now. If you’re struggling to keep up with the news, wondering whether it’s even worth it to try, or feeling overwhelmed by your life and/or the world’s challenges, please join me at The Point. 'KEEP HOPE ALIVE' - A message by Carlton D. Pearson (Humanist Service)
The message was delivered on Sunday, September 1, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION How should we try to relate to what feels totally “other?” Can black or ethnic “under-privilege” relate to white privilege, and vice versa? Does the Trading Places idea work in such a setting? How about humanist mindsets with super-human mindsets? Something is futile when it becomes incapable of producing any useful result—it’s pointless. We mustn’t allow any situation to reduce our hopes to such a state. In the words of Jessie Jackson, we must “keep hope alive.’” Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Here at All Souls, we aim to make it work best for all of us. 'WHO'S A HERETIC?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

'WHO'S A HERETIC?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. DESCRIPTION Our church is being seen on “the big screen” in theaters across the country in the feature documentary, 'American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel'. It’s certainly nothing new for Unitarians and Universalists to be accused of heresy for embracing a scientific and evolutionary worldview and for asking questions about doctrines that are considered unquestionable by some. Yet, as one watches the film the question arises “Who are the heretics in this story?” The folks who tend to call progressive religious thinkers “heretics” are shown to have strayed quite far from the foundations of Christianity. In the spirit of our summer series, Trading Places, I will explore what it’s like to be on both sides of the heresy debate. I like to think if Jesus were to come back today he would feel more welcome at All Souls than at a lot of the churches that believe they are waiting for and working for Him. Whether you are a Humanist, a Buddhist, Jewish, UU, a progressive Christian or none of the above, you will find yourself in this story.

The message was delivered on Sunday, July 14, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister, at the Humanist Service. DESCRIPTION I never thought anybody would ever attribute the word “heresy”, “heretic” to me. It was just wasn’t in my mind at all. It just means choice or opinion, or to choose differently from others, “heresies” in Hebrew/Greek. So, the whole idea of getting out the traditions of the traded down ideologies and ideas, and developing an independent way of thinking, is dangerous. Join me in The Point, Humanist Hour as I trade places from my traditional pulpit to talking about my experience and the subject matter in the documentary, American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel. *Music: Majeste Pearson, vocal solo; David B. 'FLEXING OUR TRUTH' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)

'FLEXING OUR TRUTH' - A sermon by Carlton D. Pearson (Contemporary Service)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister. DESCRIPTION Static fact or linear truth can easily become stagnant truth and as the old axiom says, familiarity breeds contempt. Pure truth is informative, transformative, entertaining, engaging, and creative. This non-linear truth is flexible and fluid as our own understanding and spiritual growth evolves. Otherwise, truth would only be lifeless facts and stats that don't invigorate the human spirit. This month at All Souls, we'll be discussing and discovering aspects of truth that relate to the development and expansion of our humanity, community, and individuality.
