View the Show Notes For This Episode Get Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hyman Sign Up for Dr. Hyman’s Weekly Longevity Journal Our global mental health crisis is growing at an exponential rate, with over half a billion people suffering from depression and anxiety; it’s time we rethink our understanding of the underlying root causes of mental health challenges. From treating thousands of patients, I’ve learned that depression is not in your head. It’s in your body. More specifically, your gut. When your gut is unhealthy and inflamed, your brain is unhealthy and inflamed. In Functional Medicine, we know that the gut and the brain are intimately connected and that the health of one directly influences the health of the other.  In today’s Health Bites episode, we’re diving into the gut-brain connection and sharing Functional Medicine tools to support your gut health and, as a result, your mood and mental health.  In this episode, I discuss: Our global mental health crisis (2:45) The gut-brain connection (4:18) The story of Marks's broken brain (5:15) Features of the gut-brain axis (8:57) Gut hormones that send signals to your brain (10:06) Role of the gut microbiota in mood and mental health (12:24) How stress negatively impacts our gut microbiome (20:14) The link between leaky gut and poor mental health (21:41) The Functional Medicine approach to fixing the gut (25:56) The 5R Program for fixing your gut health (30:09) This episode is brought to you by AG1 and Rupa Health. Moment 145: The Alarming Link Between Your GUT & Depression: Tim Spector

Moment 145: The Alarming Link Between Your GUT & Depression: Tim Spector
In this week’s moment, gut health and diet expert Dr Tim Spector discusses the power of the microbiome, your crucial community of gut microbes. Discoveries about the microbiome have exploded in the last 10 years and revolutionised the way we see the tiny bugs living within our intestine. Tim sees the microbiome as an incredible pharmacy within us, as individual microbes pump out vital chemicals for your immune system. These chemicals also affect brain function and your moods, playing a vital role in depression, as this is directly linked to the quality of your gut microbes. How do you improve your microbiome? Food plays a vital role in feeding microbes, Tim says the key is to consume as diverse a range of plants as possible, aiming for 30 different types of plants a week to maximise the diversity of species in your gut. The foundation of our health is a robust immune system that has a very important mechanism of cleaning out inflammatory cells. If this process is broken, the inflammatory cells can actually turn other functioning cells into inflammatory cells. Our daily life habits and exposures, such as sleep, stress management, diet, and toxins, affect key biological processes that impact our immune function. When our immune health is functioning properly, the rest of our body follows with less illness and disease.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Leonard Calabrese about ways that we can support our immune systems to reduce the chance of illness and disease.

Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing.

Dr. Leonard Calabrese is a Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Vice Chair of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases. He is also the director of the RJ Fasenmyer Center for Clinical Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic and holds joint appointments in the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Wellness Institute.

#203 Cause of Death (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

#203 Cause of Death (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

In this 203rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode we once again discuss college presidents, in light of what is happening at Harvard and other elite schools. We talk about historical and bureaucratic constraint, Evergreen, consulting firms, and plagiarism, and, in a related story, how someone acting on behalf of the Mayor of Boston mistakenly invited all 13 city councilors to a holiday party, when she meant to invite only the 6 who are “electeds of color.” Then: what do morbid curiosity and predator inspection have in common? People seem to be dying at high rates, and in new contexts, but is this actually the case? How would we know? What do the global excess mortality data suggest? Then: rules to live by, as acknowledged by us at Hanukkah.
