    325. Trauma Bonding: What it is, How to Notice it, and Knowing When and How to Leave

What exactly is Trauma bonding? What if I told you that bonding with someone else over a traumatic event isn’t actually trauma bonding – it’s something else entirely! It’s about a relationship with someone who is traumatising and abusing you.

I’m going to take you through what a trauma bond is, how to spot it, the 7 stages of trauma bonding, and how to know when (and how) to get out of a trauma bonded relationship.

889: Win Against Addiction Uncovers Old Afflictions | Feedback Friday

889: Win Against Addiction Uncovers Old Afflictions | Feedback Friday

Guilt over stealing from your dad under the thrall of addiction also makes you ponder how his actions influenced your addiction. Welcome to Feedback Friday!

And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in!

On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss:

    • Guilt over stealing from your dad under the thrall of addiction also makes you ponder how his actions influenced your addiction. How do you come to grips with your past to break the cycle of affliction (especially now that the cost of therapy surpasses your budget)?
    • Can you restore trust to a relationship once infidelity and lies are introduced? Perhaps it's more important to wonder: Should you even try?
    • Do you have legal recourse against a law firm that somehow leaked your personal information in an online data breach — although you never did business with them or gave them the info in the first place, and they refuse to answer your inquiries? [Thanks to attorney Corbin Payne for helping us with another sticky situation!]
    • After running the family dojo during your stepfather's cancer treatment and his subsequent surprise departure, he's returned, accusing you and your mother of theft while poaching clients for his own dojo. Do you sever ties, pay the six figures he claims he's owed, or intervene on behalf of his seemingly slipping mental health?
    • You joined your current company because of its values and mission to help people, but you've seen those values shift since the death of its founder. Now the financial bottom line always trumps morality. Is there a way for an organization to strike a balance between give and take? Or should you simply give up and become another cog in the machine?

Britt Frank - How to Get Unstuck and Move Past What's Holding You Back

Britt Frank - How to Get Unstuck and Move Past What's Holding You Back

In this week's super practical and deeply important episode, I speak with Britt Frank, author of the new book, The Science of Stuck, and one of my new favorite people.

Britt is a clinician, educator and trauma specialist who speaks and writes widely about the mental health myths that keep us stuck and stressed. An award-winning adjunct professor at the University of Kansas, she is also a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Level 3 trained in the Internal Family Systems therapeutic model. She also worked as a primary therapist at a drug and alcohol treatment center, an inpatient therapist at a children’s psychiatric hospital, and now owns a private practice.

Through her own difficult past and her wide qualifications, Britt's new book reveals a brilliantly articulated and research-based tool kit for moving past what's holding you back in life, in love, and in work. Her approach has quickly become one of my favorite ways of discussing the topic. This conversation is very much worth the short time commitment.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • Even if you're fine, it's still worth doing the work.
    • Britt's tumultuous past and what led her to her work.
    • Trauma is like brain indigestion, and we all experience it differently.
    • Does it really matter why we're feeling the trauma, or should we just fix it?
    • Dogmatic models of therapy, and why therapists often don't offer direct solutions.
    • What is Somatic Experiencing?
    • Why do we get stuck? A lack of information and ignoring painful truths.
    • The good side of getting stuck.
    • Steps: 1. Get honest, 2. Consider your options, and 3. Do what you're willing to do.
    • Why do some people not want to move forward?
    • Saying "this is just who I am" as an excuse is not scientifically accurate.
    • Being honest with yourself will force you to change eventually.
    • Her new book, The Science of Stuck, a dream come true and a gift to the world.

“When the heart is healed, everybody gets the signal, the body is out of the past.”

I’ve got an expert and a favorite guest on the The School of Greatness today to help calm some of our fears and teach us how to positively rewire our minds in order to heal and stay healthy.

Dr. Joe Dispenza is an international lecturer, researcher, corporate consultant, New York Times bestselling author, and educator who has been invited to speak in more than 33 countries on 6 continents. As a lecturer and educator, he is driven by the conviction that each of us has the potential for greatness and unlimited abilities.

776 I Was Sexually Abused (How to Heal from Trauma)

776 I Was Sexually Abused (How to Heal from Trauma)

YOU'RE ONLY AS SICK AS THE SECRETS YOU KEEP.
Five years ago, I made my first post opening up about my childhood sexual abuse.
It was the best thing I could have done.
My life became a billion times better when I started to share my shame.
I was able to sleep through the night.
    I connected to other people.
And I was able to give and receive love.
Now I want to help other people experience the same feeling of light, peace, passion, and power that I did when I opened up about my rape.
On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about how I healed my history of sexual abuse.
My life mission is now to help these men free themselves from past trauma. So often they are not given the space or permission to share their vulnerabilities.
One in six men has experienced sexual abuse.
It’s time to reclaim your life. Be the owner of your life, not the victim of your life.
So get ready to learn all about my journey to open up about my past on Episode 776.
In This Episode You Will Learn:
How breakdowns can lead to breakthroughs (18:30)
The moment I opened up about what happened to me (26:00)
What has changed since I first shared this story five years ago (35:00)
How shame and anger block love (40:00)
The reason I’m grateful for my history of sexual abuse (44:00)

Victimology (CRIME VICTIMS) with Callie Rennison

Victimology (CRIME VICTIMS) with Callie Rennison

In a world saturated with CSI spinoffs and true crime documentaries, we look at a criminology subset focusing not on the pathology of the killers, but on the victims of crime: their experiences, vulnerability, survival rates, statistics, trauma, and recovery. In the least goofy episode to date, the brilliant and warm professional victimologist Dr. Callie Rennison of the University of Colorado chats about resources, historical changes of perspective, gender's role in victimization and how people of color and Native populations are at a tragically higher risk for violent victimization. Also covered, PTSD and fear at school, trauma from homophobia and how Dr. Rennison used Brock Turner as a textbook illustration for a rapist. If the superficial thirst for serial killer stats doesn't sit quite right with you or you'd love a career that gives back, this episode might be just what you need. Also please get a Ph.D and be one of Dr. Rennison's colleagues.

745 Defining Masculinity and Its Power with Jason Wilson

745 Defining Masculinity and Its Power with Jason Wilson

EMOTIONS ARE GREAT SERVANTS, BUT POOR MASTERS.
So many men are hurting, and then hurting others.
People don’t want to hear that.
But men feel like they’re emotional prisoners.
They are committing suicide at much higher rates. They are the ones performing mass shootings. They are reacting in violence.
We have to allow men ways to process their past and to express their emotions in order to become the people they are meant to be.
It’s not important to “be a man,” it’s important to be human.
On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about the definition of masculinity with a man whose mission is to mentor boys: Jason Wilson.
Detroit’s Jason Wilson is a husband and father of two, and the founder and head instructor of the Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy, also known as CATTA. In 2015, he received the Campaign for Black Male Achievement Innovation Accelerator Award. In 2016, Wilson received the President's Volunteer Service Award in Washington D.C.
Wilson has also been a guest on The Dr. Oz Show where he discussed his Emotional Stability Training® approach. In 2016, Wilson was a presenter at the White House for the My Brother's Keeper Showcase presented by then-President Barack Obama.
What Jason is doing so needed in the world.
Like Frederick Douglass said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
So get ready to learn how to heal past trauma, rule your emotions, and “man down” on Episode 745.
    Some Questions I Ask:
When did you realize your life was full of trauma? (16:00)
What should a man do if he expresses a hurt side of himself and he gets ridiculed by his partner? (24:00)
How do you rule your emotions? (39:00)
    What’s your biggest insecurity? (45:00)
What’s your biggest insecurity about being a father? (49:00)
What should define us as men? (57:00)
In This Episode You Will Learn:
Why men need to operate in the fullness of who they are (27:00)
The first steps to take to process past trauma (30:00)
How men can be better lovers to their partners (38:00)
    About Jason’s training academy (42:00)
The best way women can support men in processing trauma (52:00)
Why it’s important for men to cry (55:00)

618 Faith Over Fear with Gabby Bernstein

618 Faith Over Fear with Gabby Bernstein

“RESISTANCE IS WHAT BLOCKS US FROM RECEIVING SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE.”
There’s so much happening in the world right now. One thing we can’t do is give in to the fear.
Instead, give in to love. Give support, passion, and nothing but love to everyone you meet.
For this 5 Minute Friday, I decided to refer back to an older episode of The School of Greatness with Gabby Bernstein.
Gabby is a NYT bestselling author, she’s regarded by Oprah as one of the emerging spiritual leaders of our time, and she is a powerhouse force of love and healing.
Learn about how you can make the world a better place on Episode 618.
In This Episode You Will Learn:
The root problem we all have (1:12)
How great movements were created (1:58)
What we need to keep our eyes out for (2:52)
    Where resistance comes from (3:42)
The secret antidote to the world’s problems (4:15)
