How do people become powerful? Can understanding power protect us from those who wield it too strongly?
When Robert Greene first set out to write about power, he didn’t have much of it. He worked odd jobs and was largely at the mercy of other people’s power. Now, his book “The 48 Laws of Power” has given him the power he wrote about. He sat down with me to share what he’s learned on both sides of that spectrum.
This… is a Bit of Optimism.

THERE IS ORDER TO THE CHAOS.
What is this place?
Are we even really here?
Is there a higher power that created us, or was it a random explosion?
These are some big questions.
But the odds of life actually existing are insane. Everything would have had to had come together so perfectly.
It’s hard for people to wrap their minds around, but we need to admit there is so much about the universe we don’t understand.
For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with John Brenkus where we discuss how the soul and science can meet.
John Brenkus is a six-time Emmy award-winning creator, host, and producer of Sport Science on ESPN. He is also co-founder of BASE Productions and a New York Times bestselling author. He currently hosts his own podcast The Brink of Midnight.
He dives into the idea of time and how humans put labels on things that are hard for our brains to comprehend.
I really enjoy the way that Josh is able to explain complicated scientific ideas.

“PROGRESS IS THE SOUL OF THE UNIVERSE.” - DE CHARDIN
What do you believe in?
We all agree that certain things are wrong. We’re constantly redefining what it means to treat each other with compassion and respect.
So what is it that’s inspiring us to change?
You might think that it’s random. But maybe there is a force behind it all.
For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with author, speaker and former pastor Rob Bell where he talked about why he believes in God.
Rob Bell is the author of ten books, including the New York Times Bestsellers What We Talk About When We Talk About God, The Zimzum of Love, Love Wins and What Is the Bible?. His podcast, called the RobCast, was named by iTunes Best of 2015. He’s been profiled in the New Yorker, toured with Oprah, and in 2011 Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Rob reminds us that moving forward and leaving harmful practices behind is what it means to be human.

THE SCHOOL OF GREATNESS IS TURNING SIX.
I’ve been hosting The School of Greatness for six years.
We’ve done 750 episodes.
That’s 750 conversations with inspiring people like Kobe Bryant, Scooter Braun, Maria Sharapova, Tony Robbins, Sarah Blakely, Maria Shriver and more.
When I started, I hoped it would reach millions of people. Now the podcast has over 90 million downloads.
My life has changed for the better because of The School of Greatness. I hope yours has, too.
Anniversaries are a great time to reflect back on how far you’ve come.
That’s why, for this Five Minute Friday, I bringing back a conversation with Robert Greene from my first podcast episode ever.
Robert Greene is a best-selling author known for talking about strategy, power, and seduction. His books include The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law (with rapper 50 Cent), Mastery, and The Laws of Human Nature.
You can hear the sound quality was different back then. That’s because I started out recording episodes on my iPhone! I now have an entire team that supports me and my business.
Robert discusses the idea of having the discipline to achieve mastery after finding something you’re passionate about. Interestingly enough, that’s why I started this podcast and why I continue to do it.
Thank you for listening and joining me in the pursuit of greatness.
Learn about the concept of mastery and see where it all started in Episode 750.

WHEREVER YOU ARE IS A NEW TARTING POINT.
We often think of pain as bad.
Whether you’re going through a breakup, getting let go from a job, or making a big move, the experience is uncomfortable.
But you need that feeling to truly make changes in your life. It’s how you can adopt new thought patterns and let go of old habits.
Think back on your own challenging experiences and how it affected your outlook.
You are the person you are today because something made you want to rise above mediocrity.
On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about the mindset of abundance and the power of pain with the founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center: Michael Beckwith.
Michael Bernard Beckwith is a minister, author, and founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center, a New Thought church with a congregation estimated in excess of 8,000 members. Michael was one of the featured teachers in The Secret and is the originator of the Life Visioning Process, a technique purporting to offer its practitioners a method for putting a stop to being a passive tourist in one's life.
Michael knows the power of thought and how it can lead you to the life you’ve always wanted. Once you start asking the empowering questions, the universe will answer you.
So get ready to learn how to stay in the flow of life by creating your vision on Episode 748.

EMOTIONS ARE GREAT SERVANTS, BUT POOR MASTERS.
So many men are hurting, and then hurting others.
People don’t want to hear that.
But men feel like they’re emotional prisoners.
They are committing suicide at much higher rates. They are the ones performing mass shootings. They are reacting in violence.
We have to allow men ways to process their past and to express their emotions in order to become the people they are meant to be.
It’s not important to “be a man,” it’s important to be human.
On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about the definition of masculinity with a man whose mission is to mentor boys: Jason Wilson.
Detroit’s Jason Wilson is a husband and father of two, and the founder and head instructor of the Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy, also known as CATTA. In 2015, he received the Campaign for Black Male Achievement Innovation Accelerator Award. In 2016, Wilson received the President's Volunteer Service Award in Washington D.C.
Wilson has also been a guest on The Dr. Oz Show where he discussed his Emotional Stability Training® approach. In 2016, Wilson was a presenter at the White House for the My Brother's Keeper Showcase presented by then-President Barack Obama.
What Jason is doing so needed in the world.
Like Frederick Douglass said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
So get ready to learn how to heal past trauma, rule your emotions, and “man down” on Episode 745.

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A BOOK, HOW WOULD YOU WANT YOUR STORY TO GO?
Whatever it is that you want to do in this new year- declare it.
Tell everyone.
One of the scariest things you can do is to admit your goals. What if you fail?
But saying your intentions out loud allows the universe and those around you to make them a reality.
Holding yourself accountable to what you really want won’t be easy, but it will force you to dig deep.
No one knows this better than my guest on today’s special episode of The School of Greatness. I’m sharing a speech from this year’s Summit of Greatness with an inspirational athlete and author: Amy Purdy.
Amy Purdy is a para-snowboarder, motivational speaker, clothing designer and New York Times bestselling author. She is a 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist, 2018 Paralympics silver medalist, and co-founder of Adaptive Action Sports. In 2013, She was named one of the top 15 most marketable para-athletes in the world by the International Olympic Committee.
Amy has competed on CBS’s The Amazing Race and ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, eventually becoming the show’s runner-up.
Amy used a tragedy that took her feet to push her to the next level. She teaches us to use obstacles not as a reason stop but as a springboard to new ideas.
So get ready to learn how to write your own story on Episode 743.
Some Questions Asked:

DON'T LET "POTENTIAL" BE WRITTEN ON YOUR TOMBSTONE.
About ten years ago when I was playing professional football, I got injured.
I ended up on my sister’s couch.
I felt bad for myself and thought that there should be a way for people like me to get help.
Then I realized- what if I could solve this problem?
It was that experience that led me into the work I do today.
One of the reasons I don’t follow politics is because I want to focus on overcoming our own challenges.
That’s why I’m so interested in my guest on today’s episode of The School of Greatness: Ben Shapiro.
Ben Shapiro is editor-in-chief of The Daily Wire and host of "The Ben Shapiro Show," the top conservative podcast in the nation. Ben is the New York Times bestselling author of seven nonfiction books and is constantly featured on major newspapers and websites.
Ben believes that people need to look within when they have a problem. He’s more interested in root values than debating specific issues.
He ruffles a lot of feathers and I don’t agree with everything he says, but I still think you’re going to enjoy this one.
So get ready to learn about going from victimhood to a powerful mindset on Episode 742.

Maybe you’re waiting until you reach your goal weight, you get that car, or you get that promotion.
What if I told you that your happiness is not going to be there when you get those things?

On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I created a mashup on happiness with quotes from Marisa Peer, Rich Roll, Trent Shelton, Brooke Ence, James Clear, Rachel Hollis, Shaun T, and Susan David.
All of these people agree that happiness cannot be found in things or achievement. It’s within your power RIGHT NOW to be happy.
