3:12 - The HRP Podcast, Episode 37: PFAS Pulse & Carolina Hats

We're using this month's podcast to tell you about the vital content happening on HRP's PFAS Pulse, and aggregator of all things PFAS. HRP's Environmental Practice Leader, Tom Darby tells us about the best articles we've seen so far. We then join Matt Wallace, cohost of P3, the PFAS Pulse Podcast, to look back at some of the best episodes we've put out. Finally, we're in HRP's South Carolina office this week! So, for the Play Hard segment, we headed on over to the Brewery we share a hallway with, to settle an office debate on appropriate hats.

On this episode of 3:12, we're taking a deep dive in the Women's Employee Resource Group (ERG). ERGs are employee identity or experience-based groups that build community. ERGs are sometimes known as Affinity Groups or Diversity Groups. ERGs are generally based on building community, providing support and contributing to personal and professional development in the work environment.

We hear from staff on the value of the Women's ERG before being joined by Yvonne Alston of Indelible Impressions for our play hard segment, where we get to know each other a little better with the card game: Actually Curious.

What makes a good marine scientist with Prof. Kirsten Benkendorff

What makes a good marine scientist with Prof. Kirsten Benkendorff

What does it take to be a great scientist? What skills do you need? What is most important? We speak with Professor Kirsten Benkendorff from Southern Cross University to learn her thoughts as well as discover the work she does to protect our marine ecosystems.

Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education

    About Professor Kirsten Benkendorff

There’s evidence that people can be happier and healthier if they regularly eat seafood. However, we can’t produce healthy seafood if we don’t look after our estuaries and oceans.

Kirsten is a Professor of Marine Science and loves inspiring students with my passion for marine biodiversity. She mentors students in evidence-based research and leads multi-disciplinary teams investigating the value and vulnerability of marine resources. Her research focuses on the nutritional and medicinal properties of marine species and how these are impacted by a range of environmental stressors, including climate change and pollution. To date, her research teams have produced over 150 scientific papers.

Kirsten works with the fisheries and aquaculture industry, government agencies, traditional owners and community groups to find solutions to environmental problems. Her contributions to science have been recognised in several awards including Young Australian of the Year for Science and Technology
and the Australian Academy of Science Dorothy Hill Award for marine and earth science. She is hoping her ongoing research will influence policies on water quality management and pesticide regulation, in order to keep our seafood safe and healthy.

She is keen to collaborate and connect with the community to share her knowledge. So, look her up if you want to learn more about marine biodiversity and what we need to do to protect it!

Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education

With interviews with leading science educators and STEM thought leaders, this science education podcast is about highlighting different ways of teaching kids within and beyond the classroom. It's not just about educational practice & pedagogy, it's about inspiring new ideas & challenging conventions of how students can learn about their world!

S2 E2: “It was almost the revelation of my own humanity.”

Spending just two hours a week in nature could improve your mental and physical health. That’s the conclusion researchers at the University of Exeter Medical School came to in their 2019 study; that analysis would change Mike Fuhrmann’s life forever. After struggling with anxiety and depression, he would go on to hike over 13,000 miles of the country’s most spectacular trails. Along the way, he learned to manage his mental health, was inspired to pick up a camera, and made lasting connections with fellow wanderers.

    315. The World is Not Ending | Bjørn Lomborg

Dr. Peterson's extensive catalog is available now on DailyWire+: https://utm.io/ueSXh

Dr Jordan B Peterson and Dr. Bjørn Lomborg discuss the present sense of impending doom that has swept the western world- and specifically today's young people. Together they break down the ideas of social credit and easy activism, and paint the picture of a world we can strive for, without the demonization and destruction of the one we currently inhabit.

Bjørn Lomborg is a Danish author, having written numerous books on climate change such as “False Alarm,” “The Skeptical Environmentalist,” and “How to Spend $75 Billion to Make the World a Better Place.” He is the president of the think tank Copenhagen Consensus Center that focuses on doing the most good, for the most people, with increasingly limited budgets. Previously, Lomborg was the director of the Danish government's Environmental Assessment Institute.

Electric Cars: The story of L.A. smog, a homemade scooter and the ultimate redemption

Electric Cars: The story of L.A. smog, a homemade scooter and the ultimate redemption

In an age where gas-powered vehicles account for nearly half of greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, electric vehicles are a way to help slow global warming. Over the last decade, the EV industry grew by leaps and bounds and Tesla has arguably done more for the industry than any other company. But the next big thing for EVs… might be making them smaller.

In this episode, Wally Rippel remembers gazing out his classroom window at the air pollution hanging over LA one smoggy day and how that led to building what would become GM’s infamous EV1. Then Wim Ouboter recalls how his homemade push scooter started a chain of events that inspired him to build a miniature electric bubble car named the Microlino.

In 1968, Wally converted an old VW microbus to electric drive and raced it across the country. By 1990, he was designing the prototype for the world’s first commercially available electric vehicle of the modern era. It had the design, it had the buzz. But most EV1s ended up in the crusher and some believe GM sabotaged their own project.

Wim's Microlino is an extension of the work done by Wally and other EV pioneers. It embodies the ‘micro-mobility’ philosophy he first imagined while building his scooter empire and has environmental benefits that bigger EV’s can’t match.
