How Political Language Is Engineered — with Drew Westen and Frank Luntz

How Political Language Is Engineered — with Drew Westen and Frank Luntz

Democracy depends on our ability to choose our political views. But the language we use to talk about political issues is deliberately designed to be divisive, and can produce up to a 15-point difference in what we think about those issues. As a result, are we choosing our views, or is our language choosing them for us?

This week,Your Undivided Attention welcomes two Jedi Masters of political communication. Drew Westen is a political psychologist and messaging consultant based at Emory university, who has advised the Democratic Party. Frank Luntz is a political and communications consultant, pollster, and pundit, who has advised the Republican Party. In the past, our guests have used their messaging expertise in ways that increased partisanship. For example, Luntz advocated for the use of the term “death tax” instead of “estate tax,” and “climate change” instead of “global warming.” Still, Luntz and Westen are uniquely positioned to help us decode the divisive power of language — and explore how we might design language that unifies.

CORRECTIONS: in the episode, Tristan refers to a panel Drew Westen and Frank Luntz were on at the New York Public Library. He says the panel was “about 10 years ago,” but it was actually 15 years ago in 2007. Also, Westen refers to a news anchor who moderated a debate between George H. W. Bush and Michael Dukakis in 1988. Drew mistakenly names the anchor as Bernard Kalb, when it was actually Bernard Shaw.

Matthijs Schouten - A Clause for Protecting Nature in the Social Contract

Matthijs Schouten - A Clause for Protecting Nature in the Social Contract

Who do we think we are on this planet? We've objectified nature and somehow made it seem unnatural to us. Now, more than ever, we need to build a partnership with the environment and include it as a protected party in the social contract.

That is exactly what today's guest, Matthijs Schouten, preaches through his work as a Dutch ecologist and philosopher. Matthijs works for Staatsbosbeheer, a Dutch government organization for forestry and the management of nature reserves. He is a Professor by Special Appointment of Nature and Landscape Protection at the Universities of Cork and Galway in Ireland and special professor of Ecology and Philosophy of Nature Conservation at Wageningen University.

Matthijs is a rare blend of disciplines - biology, Celtic linguistics and literature, comparative religious studies and Eastern philosophy - and has conducted research and campaigns on protecting peat bog ecosystems. This has led him to advocate that a sustainable future for the community of all life begins with understanding that the well-being of nature and the earth is interrelated with our own well-being.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • How Matthijs became one of the world's preeminent protectors of peat bogs
    • That any one of us can make a difference
    • The baffling entitlement of the government to destroy habitats by their own decree
    • Who the hell do we think we are on this planet?
    • The objectification of nature as something "made for us"
    • How disrespecting nature led to the COVID-19 epidemic, and how that relieved it
    • The need to see nature as a collection of subjects, not objects
    • Applying the social contract to "other than people-persons"
    • The health benefits of nature and moving from the head to the heart
    • The foolish idea that we're separate from the world
    • The hidden impacts of a life lived passionately

Alexandra Cousteau - Life as an Explorer and Restoring Our Planet's Lost Abundance

Alexandra Cousteau - Life as an Explorer and Restoring Our Planet's Lost Abundance

Today's guest is the magnificent Alexandra Cousteau, a third generation member of the legendary Cousteau family who explore and explain the natural world. She is captivating.

Continuing the work of her world renowned grandfather Jacques-Yves Cousteau and her father Philippe Cousteau, Sr., Alexandra is a National Geographic "Emerging Explorer," filmmaker and globally recognized advocate on water issues. She is a masterful storyteller dedicated to advocating the importance of conservation and sustainable management of water in order to preserve a healthy planet. Alexandra is the co-founder of OCEANS 2050, a global program of ocean afforestation aiming to restore abundance to the oceans in one generation. She is also a Senior Advisor to OCEANA and is deeply involved in its campaigns to curb overfishing.

I had so many questions for her: What's it like to live as an explorer? And be a mother? What is your happiness? Are people meant to live among nature? What I got was an incredible series of stories, a wealth of wisdom on the state of our world's oceans and environment, and a whole lot of reasons to finally be optimistic about the future of our planet. Her words are essential listening.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • How Alexandra exposed her "city boy" husband to nature
    • Why she avoids field missions and instead focuses on advocacy and activism
    • The pain of leading a mission you believe will help the world, only to face opposition
    • Her mindblowing OCEANS 2050 initiative
    • The shocking state of our oceans (with horrifying statistics)
    • Whether humans are meant to live in nature or cities (I'm feeling the itch)
    • How the current generation is making her optimistic
    • Did COVID-19 help the environment? The answer isn't so simple.
    • Her amazing thoughts on happiness: "I'm aligning my beliefs with my actions for the first time in my life, and I feel like I'm leaving a better world for my children"
    • How her father, who died when she was a child, left a lasting guide for her
    • Does Alexandra want her children to be explorers? - "I just want them to be happy."
