Curious Case Vault #3 - A Non-Fatal 19th Century Gunshot Wound to the Head

Curious Case Vault #3 - A Non-Fatal 19th Century Gunshot Wound to the Head

This episode of the Curious Case Vault has an admittedly grim premise--a patient who suffered two gunshot wounds to the head.  In this discussion, Alba leads us through a case of a young Brooklyn, NY man who, in the spring of 1888, sustained what could have been a devastating injury in any time in history.

In his case, we'll see how the neurosurgeon of the time treated this patient leading to an amazing if not inspiring outcome.  We'll talk about the evolution of this type of neurosurgical trauma care and form an appreciation for the resilience of the human brain to trauma of this sort.

Standard Deviation: Louis Chang on checking out the detours and leaving no regrets

Standard Deviation: Louis Chang on checking out the detours and leaving no regrets

As a young person, Louis Chang would make lists. Lists of long term, mid-term, and short-term goals as well as the daily tasks that he needed to do to achieve them. When he didn’t finish his daily list, he would push it to another day. One major goal was medical school right after college. But after a less than stellar grade in his intro chem class, he felt his chances at med school were over. A momentary detour afforded him the opportunity to take a range of other classes from government to German, but he actually stuck with chemistry as a major, facing the challenge head on. The breadth of experiences he had during college and his true interest for organic chemistry, however, made him question his original idea of medical school so he didn’t even take the MCATs before graduating. Instead, he worked in a chem lab at the NIH, almost pursued a PhD, and ultimately realized bench science was a little too isolating.

Unsure what was next, he tried his hand at a law firm in DC but pretty soon he knew that wasn’t the right fit either and finally applied to med school. The mix of tenacity and a willingness to try something new came in handy again when he actually did follow the to-do list toward his anticipated speciality, only to find out life had other plans.

In this episode, find out from Louis how checking out the detours can help you leave no regrets …on today's Roads Taken with Leslie Jennings Rowley.

    About This Episode’s Guest

Louis Chang a neurosurgical spine specialist with expertise in minimally invasive surgery for spinal disorders. He also is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

But it all started with the question, “What now, Lord?” Special Guest: Darlene Lobel.

    The Future of DBS

    The Future of DBS

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is complex brain surgery in which electrodes are placed at strategic, predetermined targets within a patient's brain. The electrodes are then connected to a battery pack which is surgically inserted under the skin of the chest, like a pacemaker.

When DBS was first introduced as a treatment option for people living with Parkinson’s disease more than 20 years ago, it was a game changer.

In this episode of Your Complex Brain, we’ll speak with Krembil Brain Institute neurosurgeon, Dr. Suneil Kalia, and neurologist, Dr. Alfonso Fasano, about the future of DBS – and how it could be used to help many more patients improve their quality of life, including those living with other neurological diseases.

We’ll also hear from CBC journalist Harry Forestell about his DBS journey.

    Featuring:
Dr. Suneil Kalia – Neurosurgeon & Senior Scientist at the Krembil Brain Institute & Associate Professor in the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto. As a stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon, Dr. Kalia focuses on the surgical management of movement disorders, epilepsy and pain. He holds the R.R. Tasker Chair in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery.

Dr. Alfonso Fasano – Neurologist & Clinician Investigator with the Edmond J. Safra Program in Parkinson’s Disease, Morton and Gloria Shulman Movement Disorders Clinic, at the Krembil Brain Institute (Toronto Western Hospital). Dr. Fasano is a Professor of Medicine, Department of Neurology, at the University of Toronto. He holds the Chair in Neuromodulation at UHN.

Harry Forestell – Long-time CBC journalist who has reported on some of the biggest stories of our time, and is the current host of CBC News New Brunswick at 6. At the age of 53, Harry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and subsequently had DBS surgery. Harry is first and foremost a family man; he is married to Jennifer and they have two beautiful daughters.
