On Sexual violence and… Silence - with Shari Mendes

On Sexual violence and… Silence - with Shari Mendes
Having recently passed the 100 day-mark of Hamas’s massacre against Israel, two events in recent weeks occurred that should have occurred some time ago. The New York Times published a major investigative piece on the details and the scale of Hamas’s use of sexual assault in its warfare against Israeli women. And, in recent days, Pramila Patte -- the U.N. special representative on sexual violence in conflict -- has finally agreed to come to Israel to lead an investigation of what Hamas did on October 7. In this episode, we are joined by Shari Mendes (who was quoted in the New York Times investigation and also spoke at the U.N. on Hamas and sexual violence). Shari is an immigrant to Israel who has raised four children in Israel. She is an architect, the founder of an innovative non-profit in Israel to help cancer patients, and an IDF army reservist who serves in the unit responsible for preparing the bodies of female IDF soldiers through all the steps in advance of burial. Shari has seen firsthand what the world seems to want to ignore. In our conversation, she shares some of her observations, as well as her broader take on Israeli society as we pass the 100-day mark.

Elina St-Onge - Surviving as a Young Woman in the Modern World

I came across Elina St-Onge after seeing a video she created on Facebook called "An Uplifting Perspective In These Chaotic Times" that featured clips of me speaking. I started following her vlog that documented her attempt at 100 days of meditation. Her vulnerability, or in other words "realness", captivated me. She invited me to speak on her team's podcast at The Uplifted Life, and I wanted her on Slo Mo. The result is something very special, an authentic document on what it's like to grow up as a young woman in this generation.

Elina is a self-taught video editor, graphic designer, copywriter, photographer, singer and songwriter who works as the content creator for Uplifted Life, a company dedicated to help individuals, entrepreneurs and businesses to thrive from the inside out.

While she may have found her gifts and place in the world today, her childhood and time in school was plagued with rejection from peers and a chronic sense of not belonging, of being "dumb" for not measuring up academically, and of teachers recommending Ritalin as early as her first year of elementary school.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • Her journey of unlearning the heavy burden of self-hatred and feeling broken from a system that seemed to highlight her weaknesses rather than her strengths
    • How she is finally learning to love herself, know her worth and work with the way she is wired as opposed to fighting against it
    • Her goal of becoming her "own best friend"
    • How attempting 100 days of meditation, and not finishing, taught her that goals can often defeat their own purpose
    • Looking for her tribe and the lonely millennial struggle of looking for belonging
    • The sobering realization that she is not broken and the true battle of "Me vs. Me"
    • Looking for love in all the wrong places
    • ADHD and what we think it actually is
    • The difference between "Bye, bye, childhood" and "Bye, bye, childhood traumas"
    • Women in comedy
    • Squirrels

731 Mindset of Becoming World Champion with Sasha Digiulian

731 Mindset of Becoming World Champion with Sasha Digiulian

“PASSION IS THE NUMBER ONE INGREDIENT TO SUCCEEDING IN ANYTHING.”
    Are you governed by fear?
If so, it’s time to figure out if what you’re scared of is real or imaginary.
What if there really isn’t anything to be afraid of?
You might have some setbacks or “fall,” but at the end of the day you’ll be fine.
In the face of stress, you can get overwhelmed by negative emotions, or you can look forward. You can instead focus on the task ahead.
    It’s all about your mindset.
On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about fear with a champion climber who has learned to be mental tough by constantly pushing her limits: Sasha Digiulian.
Sasha Digiulian first began climbing at 6 years old, in 1998. She has won the World Championships for Female Overall and has placed Silver in the Bouldering World Championships, as well as Bronze in the Duel. Sasha has been the undefeated Panamerican Champion 2004 to the present, and she is a three-time US National Champion.
Outdoors, Sasha is the first North American woman to climb the grade 9a, 5.14d, recognized as one of the hardest sport climbs achieved by a female. She has done two. Sasha was the third woman in the world to accomplish this grade. Additionally, she has onsighted multiple 8b+’s, 5.14a’s, ascended groundbreaking multi-pitch routes of up to 1000 feet of 8c climbing, and has accomplished multiple First Ascents and 28 First Female Ascents around the world, including a First Female Ascent on the North Face of the Eiger.
Sasha has learned to trust the process and the universe in order to quiet her anxiety.
She says that the only way to get up a mountain is to think positively. She’ll find herself saying, “Just go, just go, just go” when she’s in a tough spot.
So get ready to learn how to have the mindset of a champion risk-taker on Episode 731.
    Some Questions I Ask:
    What’s the highest mountain you’ve climbed? (20:00)

Bonus Minisode: Kalology -- Your Letters

Bonus Minisode: Kalology -- Your Letters

As a companion to Kalology (BEAUTY STANDARDS) Alie reads your thoughts about appearance and beauty culture in this, a bonus minisode. You wrote in about how make-up is a creative outlet, how beauty standards can be an oppressive time suck, about hairy pits and culture clashes, money burdens, appearances in different professions, trans and non-binary perspectives, and what you wish the next generation did differently. Y'all made Ol' Ward tear up more than once, and it's an honor to share your stories.

Kalology (BEAUTY STANDARDS) with Renee Engeln

We love it. We hate it. BEAUTY CULTURE.

Looking good can make us feel decorated, empowered and more confident -- but why?

And why are certain groups subtly told to "make-up" for their appearance?

What's the line between self-care and oppression?

Psychologist and beauty-researcher Dr. Renee Engeln shines a huge bright floodlight on the sometimes ugly machinery of the billion-dollar beauty and "fitness" industry. This is an episode for make-up lovers, haters and the millions of us confused about being both at once. It's also an opportunity for dudes to learn just how how skewed the standards are. Buckle up -- this ologist will change the way you see the world, others and hopefully, yourself.

Gynecology (NETHER HEALTH) with Philippa Ribbink

Gynecology (NETHER HEALTH) with Philippa Ribbink

Let's get intimate with the mechanics of nether parts via a frank chat with the calmest, coolest gyno in Portland, Dr. Philippa Ribbink. She visited Alie's weird hotel to chat about vaginas (vs. vulvas), self-care, mental health, imposter syndrome, trans care, childbirth, body image, the accuracy of assault statistics, grooming, hygiene and more. NO QUESTION WAS TOO DELICATE, FOLKS.

Language alert: In considering the inclusion of trans women, I opted for the use of the term "women's health" and "women" -- as gynecology is currently (yet antiquatedly) defined. In so doing, I fucked up and overlooked and excluded non-binary and trans men friends in that language and I'm so so so sorry. Some amazing Ologites alerted me to this and I just want to say I'm so so sorry that the language I used (women/lady) made anyone feel unseen. So please know that trans inclusion was on my mind, but I'm super embarrassed to have missed the mark and overlooked the non-binary community and trans men community. I see you, I love you, and I care a bunch, and I will strive to do better when it comes to inclusionary language. Curiosity and compassion are so key to social health, and as you know I'm all about asking smart people dumb questions. So thank you for patience as we all learn new things and evolve into an even more inclusive, better-linguistically-equipped society. Please continue being patient and kind to each other and as always, keep your mind open to learning new things, whether it's about snake butts or bee dancing or the origins of the Universe or another person's perspective. Learning shit is cool.
