Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: It’s a 10! The Perfection Game Applied To A Scrum Team And Their Sprint

In this episode, Josh emphasizes the significance of retrospectives, deeming them the most crucial team event. His favorite format, "It's a 10!", involves a 10-column scorecard for team members to evaluate their sprint performance. Questions like "How do you think we did?" and "What would have gotten you to a 10?" encourage open dialogue. Additionally, he suggests periodic retrospectives on the retro itself, using three self-assessment questions to enhance facilitation skills.

What's up Beautiful! Welcome to another enriching episode of our Self-Care Summer Series on the "What She Grows Through" podcast. Today, we're blessed to have the fashion designer and entrepreneur, Passion, sharing her inspiring journey of self-discovery and growth.

Passion is a testament to resilience. Her years in the challenging yet rewarding world of entrepreneurship and fashion have gifted her with a multitude of experiences. Each triumph and hurdle nudged her on a profound journey inward, guiding her to peel back layers of societal labels and discover her true self. Together, we explore the importance of self-reflection and the illuminating power of personal devotionals on our journey to self-discovery.

As we dive deeper into the episode, we address the pivotal topics of self-care, mental health, and resilience among Black women. We unpack the transformative power of vulnerability and the necessity of setting firm boundaries to protect our energy. We discuss the realities of stress, anxiety, and burnout, and how Passion has made significant strides in integrating self-care into her daily routine.

Fear is another significant theme we tackle - fear of success, being seen, fear of failure, and how resilience, persistence, and accountability can transform these fears into stepping stones to success.

In the later part of the episode, we embark on a profound exploration of the journey towards growth and self-reflection. We celebrate the transformative power of journaling and the significance of creating safe spaces, both for ourselves and our communities. As we share our stories, we unlearn negative societal teachings and foster understanding.

As we usher in the summer season, our conversation reiterates the importance of self-nourishment, building meaningful connections, and practicing self-care. My connection with Passion is an invitation for you, Beautiful, to join us on this journey of introspection, growth, and self-actualization.

Remember, it's not just about going through life, it's about growing through it. Let's do it together. Enjoy the episode!

I love that you think we deserve suits: Youth Engagement & Participation

What are the mechanics of effective youth engagement? How do you create an environment where everyone present feels comfortable to participate?  In other words, how do you get Shy Native Youth to speak up? What do you do when Indigenous youth are speaking up and they're tremendously pissed off?

Our host for this series, Sam Bird, explores these questions through conversations with three Indigenous young people:

    • Elycia Monaghan, a Kitikmeot Inuk medical student at NOSM University, and former member of the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre Youth Council.

    • Darian Baskatawang, a two-spirit Anishinaabe man of the Loon clan, member of Whitesand First Nation, and lawyer at OKT Law.

    • Autumn LaRose-Smith, a queer Métis woman, President of the Provincial Métis Youth Council Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, and former USask Student Union President.

Young People Know is a co-production between Indigenous 150+ and the Mastercard Foundation EleV program.

Our theme music is from Minou-Pimatiswen by Nigel Irwin and the Chippewa Travellers. Supplemental music provided by Nagamo Publishing and Andrea Menard. Other featured artists include Justin Delorme, Mimi O'Bonsawin, David R. Maracle, Silla, and G.R. Gritt.

Celebrating Pride Month in Parks and Recreation — Episode 138

Celebrating Pride Month in Parks and Recreation — Episode 138

It is officially Pride Month – a time to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. And while we are thrilled to celebrate Pride Month this year, the reality is that our LGBTQ+ friends, family, colleagues and community members have been under attack.

In fact, just last week, the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ advocacy group, declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. after a wave of anti-LGBTQ legislation across the country. So far in 2023, more than 525 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced and more than 75 signed into law as of the time of this recording – the worst year on record. Be sure to check out Human Rights Campaign’s Impact Report, which shows the real-life impact of this legislation across the country, as well as their guidebook, which provides guidance for navigating states with anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. There are also ways you can make your voice heard on this important issue, and I’ll be sure to link to all of these in the blog post that goes along with this episode.

And while the attacks continue, the fight for equal rights continues. As park and recreation professionals, you have the power to lead this charge through building inclusive, safe spaces, supporting your LGBTQ+ staff and community members, and creating a culture of belonging.

On today’s episode, we’re looking back at some of our previous episodes discussing LGBTQ+ inclusion in parks and recreation. If you haven’t listened to the full episodes from each of these clips you’re about to hear, I encourage you to check them out and consider what role you play in this mission. Together, we can inspire change, embrace our differences, and create a world where EVERYBODY benefits from the power of parks and recreation.

Tune in to the full episode to hear from:

    • Cal Dobbs (he/they), a queer transgender ultra marathoner and long-distance hiker who is running across America — from California to Florida — fighting for the inclusion of transgender people in sports and access to gender-affirming healthcare.
    • Peyton Daisy O’Connor (they/she) a past parks and recreation director for Buncombe County, North Carolina, who produced a formal inclusion policy for trans kids, based on their own lived experience.
    • Chris Mosier (he/him), a trailblazing athlete, coach and the founder of TransAthlete.com. Chris is a six-time member of Team USA, and in 2015 he became the first openly transgender man to represent the United States in international competition.
    • Jason Shriner (he/him), a past marketing manager for City of Manassas Park in Virginia, who discusses how his agency was re-evaluating policies and spaces to ensure they were inclusive for LGBTQ+ people and the ways they were partnering with local LGBTQ+ advocacy and sports groups.

Unlocking the Places Where It Is Safe to be Ourselves

People would be amazed at how often, early in my life, I felt invisible. Sure, I was sitting in the front row in class and raising my hand to answer questions and was a really good student. I was sitting in the 2nd chair in the clarinet section in the band. I was the best player on the basketball team. And yet, deep down I was aware that my friends and classmates truly didn’t see me.

I don’t recall any specific conversations where my parents told me how I had to show up, but I intrinsically knew that I didn’t want to do anything that would draw too much attention. I wanted to fit in. I did not want to be “othered”.

I got so good at it that I didn’t truly realize how adept I had become at compartmentalizing my life. Code-switching. Moving and speaking in a certain way “in public” and exhaling when I was with family and friends who “got me”.

But over the last several years, I have intentionally focused on finding the spaces in which I could be myself. There’s an ease to it. There is comfort. There is understanding. There is…joy.

In this special episode of Unlocking the Club, I revisit conversations we’ve had on the show with previous guests where they have shared those spaces and places they go to to connect with themselves. To be at ease. They reveal the people they surround themselves with in an effort to show up fully. We talk about how to find and how to create the psychological safety that will allow us to be our full selves. We unlock the spaces, sanctuaries and clubs when you can be unapologetically you!

I invite you to join the conversation as I discuss:

    • Importance of psychological safety

    • Creating safe spaces is essential

    • The Four Stages of Psychological Safety by Timothy Clark

    • Prioritize safe spaces

    • Finding community

    • Showing up with authenticity

    • Healing powers of nature

    • Empowerment

    • Finding our sanctuaries

    • Prioritize self-care for psychological safety.

Peer Support and How to Create Safe Spaces with Johnny Crowder| EP. 36

Peer Support and How to Create Safe Spaces with Johnny Crowder| EP. 36

In an increasingly intolerant world, having a safe place to go is critical for maintaining good mental health. A safe space is a physical or virtual location where you can relax and recharge. A safe haven where you can be yourself without fear of being judged. A safe space can exist in the abstract, such as during a sensitive subject conversation, or in physical forms, such as a private meeting room.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Family Support Groups are peer-led and allow participants to share their experiences while also receiving support from other attendees.

NAMI provides support and education to families and individuals dealing with mental health issues. NAMI recognizes the importance of the key concepts of recovery, resiliency, and support in improving the wellness and quality of life of all people affected by mental illness.

In this episode, we are joined by Johnny Crowder, the Founder & CEO of Cope Notes. Johnny Crowder is a 29-year-old suicide/abuse survivor, TEDx speaker, touring musician, mental health and sobriety advocate, and the Founder & CEO of Cope Notes, a text-based mental health platform that provides daily support to users in nearly 100 countries around the world.

With 10 years of clinical treatment, a psychology degree from the University of Central Florida, and a decade of peer support and public advocacy through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Johnny’s youthful vigor for mental health has impacted millions of lives across the globe. Johnny has received recognition from hundreds of outlets, including Upworthy, CNN, and Forbes, and today he has decided to spend some time with you and me on this podcast. I think you’re going to enjoy this one!

    Key Takeaways:

“Anybody who has experience with some type of hardship, whether you've lost a family member, whether you live with bipolar two, whatever it is, if you have experience with that, don't forget that that could be the thing that qualifies you to serve people who know what you're going through. So please don't lose sight of that.” - Johnny Crowder

“What do we need as human beings? And I think one of the biggest things is CONNECTION. And if we don't have that safe space, if we don't feel like we can open up, if we can’t be honest, then there is no real connection.” - Johnny Crowder

“One of the things that have made me feel comfortable in peer support settings is the feeling of reciprocity. One of the coolest peer support scenarios I was ever in. I wasn't even with like a certified recovery peer specialist. Nobody was certified. It wasn't me sharing and somebody listening and then them trying not to judge me, we were both sharing and the feeling of reciprocity, like both of us being there for the same reason really made it feel nonjudgmental.” - Johnny Crowder

'Undoctrinate' Your Kids: Pushing Back Against Classroom and Campus Propaganda

'Undoctrinate' Your Kids: Pushing Back Against Classroom and Campus Propaganda

Tolerance of different viewpoints and values is a key principle of a free society, and yet in classrooms and on campuses across the country, young people increasingly self-censor and self-silence to avoid speaking out against the dominant cultural narrative. Some may not even realize that there are different viewpoints and values, conditioned as they are from their early days in a public school classroom to accept whatever their teachers say. And their teachers are being similarly conditioned, spending time in schools of education that tie grades to ideological activism and link achievement to allegiance with an approved interpretation of concepts like “social justice” and critical race theory.

All of this can lead parents to wonder what they can do to help prevent their children from being indoctrinated into a belief system that may run counter to their own values or may not allow for viewpoint diversity.

The answer, according to Bonnie Kerrigan Snyder, is to undoctrinate your kids. Bonnie is the director of high school outreach at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), and author of the new and important book, Undoctrinate: How Politicized Classrooms Harm Kids and Ruin Our Schools—and What We Can Do About It.
