    📄 Flip the Script on Suffering & Amplify your Testimony of the Gospel! - Philippians 1:12-14

    📄 Flip the Script on Suffering & Amplify your Testimony of the Gospel! - Philippians 1:12-14

    None of us enjoy suffering, rejection, or persecution, but what if those are some of the most powerful vehicles for amplifying the Gospel? Are you ok with that plan of God in your life? You can either experience those things for no good reason, or you can use those experiences with the purpose of pointing more people to Jesus. Your call, but either way you will experience suffering in this life.

    The Apostle Paul is in chains for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, yet he is allowing God to use his suffering to help advance the Gospel and to encourage other believers to be even more encouraged to share their faith with others as well.

    If you have any questions or ways that I can encourage you and help you be Better Equipped in your faith and walk with Jesus, you can email me at: betterequippedwithcody@gmail.com

    Who needs more JOY? 🙋‍♂️ 🙋‍♀️ Book of Philippians → Intro to Philippians & Chapter 1:1-11

    How much joy, hope, peace, and love would you have if you were in prison for sharing the Gospel of Jesus with others? How much humility would you have if you were in prison for those reasons, and other believers were trying to drag your name through the mud? The Apostle Paul is dealing with all of these things and more as he writes this letter to the people of God in Philipi. There is so much that we can learn through the apostle Paul's teachings and attitude/outlook on life, especially in the midst of trials and persecution. I hope that you will journey along with me as I help guide us verse by verse through the book of Philippians. Be sure to like, subscribe, and share it out with others.

    Lewis Howes is a New York Times best-selling author, entrepreneur, speaker, and host of the popular podcast, The School of Greatness. In this episode, Lewis opens up about the various hardships and traumatic events he experienced starting at a very young age and reveals the valuable lessons he learned as he worked through those traumas to improve his emotional health. He talks about how his past hardships likely contributed to his success in business and athletics, only to leave him feeling unsatisfied and unfulfilled. Next, he discusses how many aspects of his life were suffering, the inflection point that drove Lewis to seek help, and the long but beautiful healing journey that followed. Lewis makes the case that adversity, and even trauma, can be beneficial if one finds meaning in tribulations and has the courage to face one’s fears and insecurities. Finally, Lewis shares the many modalities of therapy that helped him along the way and gives advice for those wanting to find inner peace and live a fulfilling, rich, abundant, joyful life.

    We discuss:

    • Lewis’s upbringing and the impact of his older brother going to prison [2:45];
    • Finding lessons in tragedy and adversity [10:45];
    • Lasting trauma from being sexually abused at age 5 [13:15];
    • Inflection point that drove Lewis to seek help, and a beautiful experience at a therapeutic workshop [16:45];
    • A powerful workshop on emotional intelligence jump started Lewis’s healing journey [27:30];
    • How being authentic can strengthen bonds with family and bring inner peace [39:30];
    • Comparing adversity with trauma and finding meaning in struggle [45:15];
    • Association between adverse childhood events and diseases in adulthood [56:15];
    • How addressing his issues with intimate relationships helped Lewis overcome physical pain related to his past trauma [59:15];
    • Healing is a journey that takes time and requires courage to face your fears and insecurities [1:08:45];
    • How Lewis thinks about mortality and uses it as motivation to pursue his dreams [1:13:00];
    • How anyone can benefit from therapy or coaching, and Lewis’s advice for finding inner peace [1:22:45];
    • Lewis’s newest book, The Greatness Mindset [1:29:15]; and
    • More.

    33. Stra18ht Up

    This is a very special podcast. We're set up on Boyne Mountain at a lodge for the weekend celebrating Nate's birthday. This was an amazing opportunity to converse with so many people from high school, many of which I have not even seen since. This podcast is by far the best one to date. Reason being simply because it brought so many beautiful people together to express appreciation for not only Nate, but for everyone in their lives. I hope that as you listen to this, you can reflect and learn to appreciate more about those around you and most importantly, learn to start loving yourself. This life is so beautiful if you let it be. Hug all your friends. Happy Birthday Nate, I love you brother. Here's to living life, as we know it. Peace and love, Joel.

    Reconciliation Is not for the Other; It's to Make Yourself Whole

    Reconciliation Is not for the Other; It's to Make Yourself Whole

    "I'm starting to understand that I'm in need of liberation. And that when I do this work, when I do anti-racism work, when I do reconciliation work with indigenous communities, it's not for them. It can't be for them. It's because I cannot be whole, I cannot be human, if I'm not doing this work."

    Sermon by Jordan Cantwell at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, February 16, 2020. Readings: Deuteronomy 30:15-20 and
    Matthew 5:21-37.

    We Need a Spectacular Intervention

    We Need a Spectacular Intervention

    "...It's those women [in Nazi Germany] who stood outside of Rosenstrasse in the cold, demanding to be reunited with their husbands. It's their husbands, defying the orders that they must ignore their wives. It's the soldiers putting down their guns and saying, 'I'm not firing on a bunch of unarmed women!' That's the power we have -- to confront the demands of an unjust society. To cause a scene that renders us awake to the political realities of our time. And to wield our collective power wisely together to jam the wheels of injustice. That's a spectacular intervention -- and a spectacular intervention is what we need. So let's get up and get going!"

    A Child Arrived Just the Other Day. He Came to the World...in the Usual Way.

    A Child Arrived Just the Other Day. He Came to the World...in the Usual Way.

    "It’s time for a new narrative that recognizes that God loves us, that God dwells with us and in us not in spite of our humanity but because of it. That it is what we see as the most ordinary about ourselves that is the most extraordinary, the most sacred. A new narrative that says that Mary is worthy of being revered because she was a woman who lived a hard life with grace and power and raised a child under the most perilous of circumstances … and that, praise God, in that she is not unique among women but in the blessed company of so many women throughout time into today. A new narrative that says what Jesus said by sitting down to eat with the most scandalous people of his day. That it is when the world most shames us that God is loving us the hardest and holding us the tightest. That it is each of us just as we are, that God loves so passionately that God cannot bear to be separated from us, from you. That none of us are disposable – and it’s time we stopped treating each other and ourselves like we are. It’s time for a new narrative."

    Sermon by Mike Kinman at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, December 22, 2019. Readings: Isaiah 7:10-16 and Matthew 1:18-25.

    Holy Blackness: the Matrix of Creation

    Holy Blackness: the Matrix of Creation

    "Jesus showed us by how he lived and died and lived again on the other side of death that nothing is too big, too much, too hard for God, that human dignity and flourishing are God’s dream for us no matter under what oppressive systems we find ourselves. The Jesus who allied himself with the poor and disenfranchised by becoming poor and disenfranchised will not abandon us to a world that does not love us, fears us and seeks to harm us. Rather Jesus stands with us as we remake the world that is our heritage, our sacred trust, as we rediscover its poetry and the poetry inside of each of us."

    Sermon by Wil Gafney at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Readings: Genesis 1:1-5, Psalm 8, Romans 8:18-25, and Matthew 24:32-44.

    Say Her Name. Say His Name. Say Their Name.

    Say Her Name. Say His Name. Say Their Name.

    "For a moment, we forget.
    In a moment, we remember.

    For a moment we remember.
    And then in a moment, we forget.

    Today we come together to honor both those whom we love but see no longer and also the struggle and dance of we whose journey on earth is not yet done.

    Today we come together to proclaim that though death seems final, though we long so deeply for the things that still seem so close and yet we increasingly too easily forget – the warmth of her touch, the smell of his hair, the sound of their laugh … we come together to proclaim that the parting of death is but painful and powerful illusion.

    That what God has joined together not even death can tear asunder.

    That when we
    Say Her Name
    Say His Name
    Say Their Name

    We are proclaiming that we have been … and always will be … One."

    Borderlands

    Borderlands

    "Many of us came here because All Saints is a community of radical love and inclusion, that speaks truth to power and advocates for peace and justice. I know this why I came. I could no longer tolerate the hideous exclusion and emotional harm done to LBGTQ siblings. I couldn’t identify with Christianity that aligned itself with a view of God as white and male. I couldn’t connect to a religion that was competitive with other religious paths. I had been traumatized by the concept of a God who required torture and death to appease his anger yet, required I love him. Here, I felt comfortable at last, free of unfair, bigoted concepts that seemed interwoven into the faith I accepted wholeheartedly."

    Is There No Balm in Gilead?

    Is There No Balm in Gilead?

    “So let us not fear our anger... or our tears... or our secrets. Let us wear them all as badges of honor. Because only then...

    Only when we are able to look at the world through tears and wail the lament that any decent feeling person would cry looking at how things are today

    'Is there no balm in Gilead?'

    Only when we are able to share our secrets and cry our laments will we be able to hear and sing that song of healing, that song of power, that song of love, that song of hope that love will always, always, always be greater than fear.”

    I'm Not OK

    I'm Not OK

    "I know that I'm not the only person that asks why. Why would some Being entitled 'the Almighty,' 'the All Powerful,' 'the Ubiquitous God,' allow this to be the state of our world? Why, in God's plan, is there so much pain and so much anger? I was brought up here, learning that God is love -- that we exist to be wrapped up in this love and that in the end it will save us. But with every day that passes, it becomes more and more difficult to believe that that is true -- the negativity keeps spreading."

    "...And then [Jesus] says, 'Be ready.' He's talking to people and it is written at a time where Christians or people who were Jewish who were following after Christ at this point in time -- because there weren't really Christians but people who were following after Christ at this time -- were feeling a little bit comfortable. And Jesus says, 'In your comfortability don't become a hypocrite.' And I wonder this morning, are we the people like the audience in Luke, who have gotten so comfortable with our earthly trappings and accomplishments that we've begun to advocate from a distance? To turn a blind eye to poverty, to foster violence to the body through white supremacy, and violence to the soul by bad policy...?"
