Coping with Nerves and a Conversation with Bruce Tychinski

Do you ever get nervous before playing. I know I get nervous when taking tests, in a crowded room with many people I don't know. Sometimes nerves have been a killer to a performance, like a degree recital or just get me side-tracked for a few measures and then snap out of it. As I get older things become easier, but after the lock down and COVID, some of those old things returned and I had to work through them again on a small scale. Take a listen to this interview with Dr. Bruce Tychinski and get to know his story as he tells how he dealt and deals with performance anxiety.

    EP 8: Public Speaking

    EP 8: Public Speaking

    Points of discussion:

    • One of my biggest fears (public speaking) and how I grew more confident in my abilities.
    • Physical changes when feeling nervous: reddening, stuttering, heart racing & why they are normal.
    • Secondary school: ducking the head down during readings, running to the toilet & avoiding speaking out.
    • Cultural differences with vocalizing opinions.
    • Liking the sound of your voice vs Expressing an opinion.
    • Studying at university in Ireland vs Studying in America.
    • Are children overly praised nowadays and is it a good thing?
    • Have we normalized using alcohol as a social crutch / confidence booster?
    • What teaching high school students taught me about public speaking.
