Poor metabolic health is the largest underlying cause of early death worldwide, making it the canary in the coal mine for not just type 2 diabetes, but a multitude of illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and even some cases of infertility and depression. Sadly, many people are walking around without even knowing they need to address their metabolic health or have any idea how to do that.
In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. William Li, Dr. Casey Means, and Dr. Richard Johnson about why metabolic health is important and ways that we can start improving it immediately at home.

Big Fish Extra Catch: Why you should cold plunge
If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know I LOVE ice bathing. It's a recent addition to my morning routine, but I don't think I'll ever go back. In this episode of Extra Catch with Shaun Stafford we're talking about deliberate cold exposure: how I got into it, what the benefits are and what actually happens to your body. As always, please do your own research before trying it or speak to your GP if you have concerns.
The Misconceptions of HIIT (And the Role It Can Play in Your Fitness Routine)
You've probably heard of HIIT — high intensity interval training. In fact, you may feel so familiar with the idea that you think you understand it. But do you?
People often hold some popular misconceptions about HIIT, and today we'll unpack what some of those are with Dr. Martin Gibala, a foremost researcher of this fitness modality and the author of The One-Minute Workout: Science Shows a Way to Get Fit That's Smarter, Faster, Shorter. Martin explains the main, underappreciated advantage of HIIT, which revolves around the "intensity-duration trade-off": the higher intensity you make exercise, the shorter your workouts can be while still triggering improvements in metabolism, cardiovascular health, and mitochondrial capacity. We get into the fact that the intensity of HIIT needn't be as high as you might think and that, contrary to popular belief, sprinting at intervals is actually a predominantly aerobic rather than anaerobic workout. Martin answers questions like whether Zone 2 cardio has an advantage over HIIT, if the so-called "afterburn effect" of HIIT is real, if you can do HIIT if you're older or have heart problems, and whether you should worry about the way HIIT can raise cortisol in the body. He also shares specific HIIT workouts you can do, including a walking interval workout and one of the best higher-intensity protocols to try.

Evolutionary Anthropology (METABOLISM) with Herman Pontzer
*Content warning up top: This episode discusses sensitive themes like diet culture, caloric intake, the psychological & physical effects of food restriction and includes many listeners’ personal experience with the term “obesity." It may be triggering for those with a history of or sensitivity to disordered eating. We also discuss the Body Mass Index, still used by medical professionals, but acknowledged by many sociologists to be rooted in structural oppression.*
Let’s explore our human machinery. And talk about Brazilian butt lifts. Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and metabolism researcher Dr. Herman Pontzer gives us the data on mitochondrial backstories, muscle mass and hormones, our expanding brains, the flaws of the Body Mass Index, humans’ relationships with nutrition, why crash dieting can change your metabolism, perspectives on sticky medical terms, isotope magic, how much exercise hunter gatherers get, carnivore diets, scales, and what to do if you're grappling with sadness.

#231 Weight loss, Visceral fat and Ozempic with Dr Nick Fuller
On todays episode I chat with friend of the podcast, Dr Nick Fuller from University of Sydney about everything to do with sustainable weight loss including why losing just 5% of your body weight triggers a cascade of processes that slows your metabolism and ultimately leads to weight gain.
We discuss calories in, calories out and a broader view on energy balance, protein requirements and the important practices you need to know about to prevent visceral fat accumulation. We also discuss the potential impact of ozempic and other drugs in this class of medications and how we should be approaching any intervention that leads to weight loss.
Dr Nick leads the research team within the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney which focuses on the physical and mental health disorders associated with obesity. His research has been published in The Lancet and JAMA, and his team provide independent clinical analysis of emerging products and technology for the treatment of obesity and associated illness and disease.

How To Avoid The Original Big Bad C, Cancer
About this interview:
Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, either they have had it, or someone they love has, or someone in their family has died from it.
With almost 1 in 3 people now getting a cancer in their lifetime, it is something that haunts us all.
But despite all the money spent on cancer research, cancer rates remain ridiclously high and survival rates have barely improved.
Current dogma is that cancer is caused by genetic mutation. But it hasn't always been the case. Otto Warburg almost a century ago proposed a metabolic cause, and now there is increasing evidence that this is the case.
This means that most cancers can be prevented and for those with cancer, treatment can be improved if they factor in the metabolic component.
Travis Christofferson is a prolific writer having written several books, including Curable and Tripping Over the Truth. In this conversation we talk about the metabolic origin of cancer and how best avoid it.
I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Why You're Not Losing Fat & Building Muscle (Avoid These Mistakes) | Dr. Andy Galpin PT 2
#376 How to Burn Fat, Heal Your Metabolism and Live Longer with Dr William Li
Dr William Li returns to the podcast to talk about his latest book, Eat To Beat Your Diet: Burn Fat, Heal Your Metabolism and Live Longer. He describes it as an anti-diet book for people who love food. It’s a ground-breaking look at the latest science around how we can harness the power of food, to activate our innate fat-burning systems and transform our health.
We talk about the common foods that are marketed as healthy yet are anything but. We talk about the important role that our gut bacteria play in our metabolism, and we talk about the foods that can damage our gut microbiome, resulting in us processing food less efficiently and potentially contributing to weight gain.
That being said, Dr Li is actually really keen not to villainise any food – there are many reasons why humans choose to eat certain foods and drinks, from our innate sweet tooth to cultural, social or religious traditions. He just wants us to be mindful of what we’re consuming, how and why.
We also do a deep dive on fat. What exactly is fat? Many of us have negative associations with that word but the truth is that fat is a very important endocrine organ. The problems only start to arise when we start storing too much, of the wrong type of fat, in the wrong places. And one of those harmful types of fat is something called visceral fat - which is a harmful type of white fat, not visible from the outside, that can sit inside us, causing inflammation, hormone disruption and playing havoc with the health of our internal organs. Dr Li explains why an expanding waistline and snoring at night, could be early indicators that you have an issue with internal fat, that needs addressing.
As well as being a scientist and medical doctor, Dr Li is really a foodie at heart. And, so of course, we talk about some of his favourite foods which have medicinal properties and fat-burning potential. He also explains why his preferred diet is something that he calls ‘MediterrAsian’ and he is keen to bust some common myths around metabolism – such as, is it true that our metabolism slows down as we get older?
This is an episode jam-packed with insights and practical information. Dr Li is an excellent communicator and full of passion. I hope you enjoy listening.
