#163: Making Medicine Modern (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

#163: Making Medicine Modern (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

In this 163rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

This week, we discuss individual vs. public health, and whether the failures of the last three years are due to an over-reliance on clinical reasoning. (Spoiler: they’re not.) Rather, the failures are due to a lack of evolutionary thinking, in combination with reductionism and a reliance on both metrics and credentials. Then: continuing last week’s discussion of how models are the product of science, how do we assess the claim that shedding caused a case of myocarditis? Finally: race relations are disintegrating in some circles, and that seems to be the obvious result of race-baiting by supposedly well-intentioned “liberals” wielding DEI initiatives. There is a widespread move to shame people for things that are immutable (e.g. race), celebrate bad things that are mutable (e.g. kinks), and pretend that immutable things can change (e.g. sex).

Sean Illing talks with Dr. Gabor Maté, a physician, speaker, and bestselling author who has written on subjects like addiction, stress, and attention deficit disorder. In Maté's new book, The Myth of Normal, he argues that the Western paradigm of health is fundamentally flawed in its attempt to separate inner, emotional well-being from bodily health. Sean and Dr. Maté discuss how our society and culture can contribute to illness. They also talk about the adverse effects of trauma, the therapeutic potential of psychedelics, and parenting. #298 The Root Cause Of Disease That Nobody’s Talking About With Dr Zach Bush

#298 The Root Cause Of Disease That Nobody’s Talking About With Dr Zach Bush

I believe that conversation matters; that long form nuanced conversation is what we need now more than ever, to make the world a better place. And for me, part of that means exposing ourselves to new ideas, new concepts and new ways of thinking that we may previously have not been exposed to. This week’s guest on my Feel Better Live More Podcast is someone who fits that bill perfectly.

Dr Zach Bush is a medical doctor and founder of the non-profit Farmer’s Footprint, created to find root cause solutions for human and ecological health. His passion for education reaches across many disciplines, including genomics, the immune system, and gut brain health.

Zach spent many years as a conventional doctor, specialising in internal medicine, endocrinology and hospice care. Disillusioned with the state of Western medicine, he began taking an integrative approach, studying the body’s microbiomes in relation to health, disease and food systems. Today though, Zach describes his life and work as ‘dedicated to the health of humanity and the planet we call home’.

In this conversation, Zach makes the case for a revolution in how we understand ourselves, our fellow humans, our healthcare and farming systems – and how we save the world. This episode is a rollercoaster ride through biology, physics, philosophy, economics and environmentalism – all sprinkled with a good dose of inspiration.

Zach and I share the view that healthcare needs radical change. It can no longer be about doctors telling patients what’s wrong and prescribing drugs and treatments that don’t look at the whole person.

We discuss how traits of ego, individualism and competition aren’t really human at all. And Zach explains how the realisation that all living beings are energetically connected and interdependent is the key to transformation – we cannot thrive as one species if we wipe out others.

We also talk about saving our soil and our food systems through regenerative agriculture, and encouraging individuals, farmers and big industry to work together to save the internal and external ecosystems that none of us could live without.

Yes, these are big topics. But ultimately, Zach’s message is one of hope. He’s not afraid to put forward big solutions, and they’re all made up of steps each one of us can start taking from today.

This is a really special conversation. It's honest, evocative and at times, provocative. I hope you enjoy listening.

Gabor Maté || The Myth of Normal

Gabor Maté || The Myth of Normal

Today we welcome Dr. Gabor Maté. A physician, renowned speaker, and bestselling author, Gabor is highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, stress, and childhood development. For his groundbreaking medical work and writing, he has been awarded the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian distinction. He is also a co-developer of Compassionate Inquiry, a therapeutic approach for deep healing and transformation. His newest book is called The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness & Healing in a Toxic Culture.

In this episode, I talk to Gabor Maté about The Myth of Normal. Healthcare in Western societies tend to focus on physical health, without accounting for an individual’s lived experience. The tension between authenticity and attachment and the pressures of a capitalist culture puts undue stress on our minds and bodies. Dr. Maté invites us to rethink trauma and disease, by emphasizing holistic well-being and the role of agency. We also touch on the topics of early childhood, epigenetics, and self-improvement.

#156 The Power of Food with Sheila Dillon

#156 The Power of Food with Sheila Dillon

Today I’m speaking to Sheila Dillon. A multi award winning food journalist, reporter, and presenter for BBC Radio 4’s “The Food Programme” where she has worked for over 20 years.

Sheila and her colleagues have truly changed the way in which we think about food in the UK and beyond. Her work has covered the breaking scandal of BSE, the rise of GM foods, the growth of the organic movement from muck and magic to a multi-million pound industry, the birth of the World Trade Organisation and irradiation at a time when those subjects were not even a gleam in a newshound´s eye.

Sheila has a really special place in my heart as well. A few years ago I was invited to her house to cook a meal and share stories about my mission to help people eat better everyday. Sheila has really championed for nutrition in medicine and bravely shared her personal story of her own cancer and how she uses food to help support her treatment which has thus far prevented the need for a stem cell transplant.

I think you’re really going to enjoy today’s stories of investigative journalism and why finding the courage to share your truth is so important.

Eczema is the topic of today’s  conversation with Dr Ruth Cammish. An NHS GP, a GP trainer and the Regional Director for the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine in Manchester.  She has been a GP for 13 years, mostly working in a deprived inner city area and her own experiences as a patient with severe eczema has highlighted how holistic care is a vital part of any long term condition, especially chronic skin diseases.  You’ll hear about how  Dr Ruth suffered severe eczema her whole life, ending up on cyclosporin, an immunosuppressant medication and discovering topical steroid withdrawal.

As a practice doctor, Ruth and her colleagues have been awarded a CQC ‘outstanding’ rating, twice, based on their approach to their patient  population which includes group consultations, an exercise class for COPD patients and their work for vulnerable patients.

On today’s podcast you’ll learn about:
