    enJanuary 19, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • The Power of a Supportive Family in SportsHaving a strong support system, especially from family, can play a crucial role in pursuing a career in sports and achieving success.

Having a strong support system, especially at an early age, is crucial for pursuing a career in sports. Jesse Lingard's grandma and granddad played a significant role in his journey to becoming a professional football player. Despite facing challenges like his parents' separation, Lingard had the desire and hunger to succeed. His grandma took him to training and games, while his granddad pushed him to practice and develop his skills. They both believed in his talent and made efforts to provide opportunities for trials with different clubs. Lingard's granddad, in particular, was tough and critical at times, but it came from a place of wanting to push him towards success. This unwavering support and guidance from his family helped shape Lingard's career and led him to his happy place on the football pitch.

    • Jesse Lingard's Mother: A Silent Battle with DepressionUnderstanding and supporting individuals dealing with mental health issues is crucial, as Lingard's mother's silent battle with depression highlights the need for adequate help and understanding.

Jesse Lingard's mother struggled with depression during his childhood. Initially, Lingard didn't understand what was happening, but as he got older, he became aware of his mother's condition. She lacked a support system at the time, and Lingard didn't fully grasp the extent of her struggles until he was around 16 or 17. Lingard's mother would often stay in bed all day, lacking motivation to get up or participate in everyday activities. However, Lingard expresses pride and gratitude when his mother found the strength to attend one of his World Cup games, despite her ongoing depression. This conversation underscores the importance of understanding and supporting individuals dealing with mental health issues, as Lingard's mother battled quietly without adequate help or understanding.

    • Jesse Lingard's Journey: Understanding Mental Health and Expressing EmotionsMental health is a crucial aspect of our lives, and expressing emotions and providing support to loved ones can make a significant difference in their wellbeing.

Jesse Lingard's mother struggled with depression after he was born, and he didn't fully understand her behavior at the time. He recalls moments when she would stretch his legs before bed, which confused him as a child. Lingard believes that his mother always had depression, but with the support system around her, she has learned to cope and manage it. Lingard himself didn't have many models for emotional expression, except for his mother, grandmother, and grandfather, who would often express their love and ask about his well-being. Lingard realizes the importance of expressing emotions and wants to show love and support to those around him, especially his mother. This conversation highlights the impact of mental health and the value of emotional expression in our lives.

    • The Importance of Self-Growth and Setting Boundaries in Romantic RelationshipsPrioritize self-care and establish boundaries to avoid attracting toxic partners, as one's emotional and mental stability directly impacts the quality of relationships.

It's important to prioritize self-growth and self-care before seeking a romantic partner. Jesse Lingard discusses his mother's tendency to attract toxic and manipulative partners, which ultimately leads to drama and unhappiness. Steven Bartlett relates this to his friends' experiences with mental health and explains how individuals who are not in a stable place emotionally or mentally tend to attract similar partners. They highlight the dangers of seeking someone to fix us, as it often leads to unhealthy relationships. It is crucial to work on ourselves and build a strong foundation before entering into a romantic relationship. Recognizing manipulative behavior and setting boundaries is essential to maintaining a healthy and fulfilling partnership.

    • The Influence of Sir Alex Ferguson on Manchester United's SuccessA strong team culture, instilled by Sir Alex Ferguson, comprising hard work, discipline, and a winning mentality, was crucial to Manchester United's success.

The culture and values instilled by Sir Alex Ferguson played a significant role in the success of Manchester United. The importance of hard work, discipline, and a winning mentality were deeply embedded in the players, even from a young age. The senior players, like Rio, Gary, and Patrice, were tough, honest, and critical, pushing the younger players to improve and strive for greatness. Being part of the Manchester United family meant being surrounded by banter, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. However, after Sir Alex Ferguson left, there was a noticeable shift in the club's atmosphere, with some feeling that it lost its familial touch, with Ed Woodward now in charge. Maintaining those values and a strong team culture remains crucial for long-term success.

    • Building Strong Relationships for Team SuccessPersonal connections and genuine care for players enhance performance and team cohesion, as seen through the examples of Alex Ferguson and José Mourinho.

Strong personal relationships and genuine care for players contribute to their performance and overall team cohesion. Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager, was known for taking the time to understand players on a personal level, getting to know their families, and showing genuine interest in their well-being. This man management approach created a strong bond between him and the players, earning their trust and loyalty. Similarly, Jesse Lingard highlights the importance of current manager José Mourinho's efforts to connect with players through personal interactions, such as random FaceTime calls. These actions demonstrate care and create a sense of importance for the players, leading to better performance and team unity. The examples provided highlight the power of showing genuine interest in individuals beyond just their performance on the field.

    • Team Bonding and Communication in Money ManagementEffective money management is important, but it's equally crucial to have a cohesive team with open communication. Lingard emphasizes the challenges of pressure and adapting to change while highlighting the importance of enjoying the game.

Effective money management is crucial in tournaments, but equally important is the collective understanding and connection within the team. Despite Gareth Southgate's reputation as a strict manager, he surprises many by not relying heavily on the "hairdryer" approach used by other managers. Instead, he focuses on creating a positive vibe and open communication with the team. However, Lingard also highlights the challenges faced by Manchester United during certain eras, despite signing world-class players. Lingard attributes some of the struggles to pressure and the need to continually adapt to new managers, which can lead to false promises and hinder team cohesion. Overall, Lingard emphasizes the importance of enjoying the game and the difficulties faced when trying to sustain success in the face of constant change.

    • Lingard's Personal Challenges and Professional StrugglesLingard's story emphasizes the significance of mental well-being and its impact on one's professional performance.

Jesse Lingard experienced significant personal challenges while also facing struggles in his professional football career. Lingard faced disappointment and confusion when he wasn't selected to play for the national team despite his exceptional performance at West Ham. He questioned the reasons behind his exclusion and couldn't understand why his form on the pitch wasn't enough. Outside of football, Lingard had to deal with his mother's hospitalization due to depression, leaving him as the primary caregiver for his younger siblings. This personal turmoil affected Lingard's mental state and focus on the pitch, making it difficult for him to perform to his full potential. Lingard's experience highlights the importance of mental well-being and the impact it can have on professional success.

    • Overcoming Mental Health Struggles: Jesse Lingard's Journey to RecoveryCommunication and seeking support are vital for mental well-being. Online criticism can worsen mental health. Remember, anyone can be affected, even professional athletes.

Jesse Lingard faced significant mental health struggles, including depression and anxiety, during a challenging time in his life. Lingard reveals that he felt isolated and overwhelmed, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Opening up about his struggles and seeking support from trusted individuals, such as his manager and team members, helped him find some relief. Lingard emphasizes the importance of communication and understanding, urging others to speak up about their feelings and challenges. He also cautions against seeking out online criticism, highlighting how it can worsen one's mental state. Lingard's experience serves as a reminder that mental health issues can affect anyone, even professional athletes, and that seeking support is crucial for overall well-being.

    • The Impact of Criticism on Professional Football PlayersNegative comments from pundits and social media can affect a football player's performance and mental state. A supportive and controlled environment is crucial for players to thrive.

Professional football players are not immune to criticism and it can have an impact on their performance and mental state. Jesse Lingard and Steven Bartlett discuss how players can be affected by negative comments from pundits and social media, and how they try to stay strong despite it. Lingard also talks about his experience with Manchester United and the lack of control and trust within the club during certain managerial periods. Lingard suggests that players nowadays have more platforms to express their opinions and that the culture has changed compared to the time when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge. The conversation highlights the importance of a supportive and controlled environment for players to thrive.

    • Lack of Structure and Balance: Lingard's Frustration at Manchester UnitedLingard emphasizes the importance of clear vision, player understanding, and modernizing facilities for success at Manchester United. Change and improvement are necessary to regain former glory.

There is a lack of structure and balance within the club, resulting in players feeling like it's a free-for-all. Lingard expresses his frustration with the current state of affairs at Manchester United, noting that even talented players like Paul Pogba struggle to perform at the club. Lingard believes that having a clear vision and understanding of what the manager wants, as seen during the Van Gaal era, is crucial for success. Furthermore, Lingard points out the importance of staying relevant and modernizing the club's facilities, as it not only impacts the players' overall experience but also reflects the club's commitment to excellence. The conversation highlights the need for change and improvement within the club to regain its former glory.

    • Lingard's Frustration with Lack of Love and Respect from West HamLingard stresses the significance of feeling valued and respected by a club, revealing the need for modernization and transparent decision-making in football clubs.

Jesse Lingard feels that his former club, West Ham, did not show him the love and respect he expected during contract negotiations. Lingard chose to join Nottingham Forest because they demonstrated a strong desire to have him on their team and went above and beyond to make the deal happen. Lingard emphasizes the importance of feeling valued and respected by a club, especially considering his contributions to West Ham's success. This conversation sheds light on Lingard's frustration with the lack of modernization and decision-making clarity within football clubs. Lingard's decision to leave his childhood club, Manchester United, was emotional and difficult, highlighting the deep attachment he had to the team.

Lingard is driven to explore different opportunities and find the next big thing in esports, gaming, and fashion. He wants to be happy and engage in activities that bring him joy. Lingard is also interested in acting and dreams of being involved in films or series, starting with comedy. Furthermore, Lingard greatly values his mother and wants the best for her, considering her journey and struggles with depression. He hopes to make her proud and have her witness his personal growth and success.

Moment 171: STOP DOING THIS! It's Ruining Your Sex Life

Moment 171: STOP DOING THIS! It's Ruining Your Sex Life
In this moment, world-renowned philosopher and thinker Alain De Botton discusses how communication can lead to a better sex life. Alain says sex is like a mirror to the relationship as a whole. If something is wrong with a couples sex life, it’s usually a symptom of a wider problem. He says that a first step towards a more fulfilling sex life is reflecting on how you are as a partner. Being open about yourself in a relationship is the best way to create mutual trust, which means that you can ‘tease’ out any issue in a relationship. This then leads to being open with one another sexually. Moment 170: The Scientific Method For Unstoppable Confidence: Professor Steve Peters
In this moment, elite sport psychologist, Professor Steve Peters discusses the way to overcome low self-esteem. Often low self-esteem manifests itself outwardly in abusive relationships, the wrong career, and impulsive behaviours. Dr Peters says these are ‘maladaptive coping strategies’, where you are punishing yourself, thinking that you don’t deserve to treat yourself well, as you believe that you fundamentally don’t deserve happiness. Dr Peters says the solution can be as simple as getting a blank piece of paper and writing down who you want to be, and what behaviours you want to have. He says that this exercise works, as once you remove the interference of your mind, this person you hope to become is actually you, as you are defining yourself. Moment 169: CIA Spy Reveals How To AVOID Media Manipulation & Brainwashing: Andrew Bustamante

Moment 169: CIA Spy Reveals How To AVOID Media Manipulation & Brainwashing: Andrew Bustamante
In this moment, the former CIA intelligence officer Andrew Bustamante discusses the crucial techniques of manipulation, which he describes as a core part of CIA training. Andrew  introduces the R.I.C.E. analogy, which stands for Reward, Ideology, Coercion, and Ego. This framework is essential for understanding the motivations of others, allowing you to connect with them, build relationships, and influence their actions. According to Andrew, reward involves anything the other person desires, while ideology reflects the person’s core beliefs and is the most powerful element of the acronym. Coercion involves using negative behaviours on someone such as guilt or blackmail, and ego relates to how the other person sees themselves. Andrew translates this manipulation technique to marketing. He suggests that by sending targeted messages to your audience and assessing their responses, you gain insights into their ideology, providing you with useful information for future sales.
