Lack of Maintenance Sunk $6M Barge

Lack of Maintenance Sunk $6M Barge

It turns out a lack of ambition sunk the “Ambition,” a crane barge that was declared a total loss after capsizing in the Gulf of Mexico last year.

The Ambition was being towed when it sank on June 15, 2022 and released nearly 2,000 gallons of oil. The vessel, owned by Rigid Constructors, was a $6.3 million loss. Results from a recent National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation blamed the accident on failure to properly inspect and maintain the barge.

Man-Made Hamster Wheel Tries to Cross the Atlantic Ocean

An extreme runner is in a bit of trouble following an ocean voyage. The runner, Reza Baluchi, was trying to traverse the Atlantic Ocean in a structure that resembles an adult-sized hamster wheel when the U.S. Coast Guard spotted him.

According to a criminal complaint, the Coast Guard found Baluchi while transiting the Atlantic Ocean 70 nautical miles off the coast of Georgia in preparation for Hurricane Franklin. The officers saw Baluchi’s “Hydro Pod vessel” and later deemed that Baluchi was conducting a manifestly unsafe voyage when they discovered his vessel was afloat as a result of wiring and buoys.

Engineers Hack Voice Recognition with PVC

Automatic speaker identification has gained popularity in security applications due to its proficiency in detecting and countering fraudulent attempts to mimic a user’s voice through digital manipulation.

In this episode, Troy asked Peter Mann, the founder of Oransi based in Blacksburg, USA, the final five questions:

    1. What does Peter believe is the hardest thing when growing a small business? Smaller firms frequently lack resources like money, a team, and brand names with instant credibility and trust. Peter emphasizes how crucial it is to research the market and understand what your company's product or service is because, as a small business, you may not be well known.

    2. Peter’s favorite business book is “This is Marketing” by Seth Godin. He also listened to How I Built This with Guy Raz. He talks with type of bigger business individuals to get their story asks questions and gets the essence of what the path was for a person in establishing their firm.

    3. Peter finds reading and watching keynotes to be of utmost significance in terms of professional development. He focuses a lot of his time and energy on the marketing side of things because that is where his interests lie.

    4. Peter suggests an effective tool for small business growth is mastering communication and coordination. And so Slack is one that they use just to help remote people communicate really well together, as well as the folks at their office.

    5. Finally, if Peter could go back to day one of starting out, he would advise himself to bear no fear. He also shared that it feels like in your 20s you have 50 years to work and you don't have to crush it on day one. Because it's a long process and it takes longer and costs more than you think to get there.

Perovskites: Solar power revolutionary or cleantech fad?

Perovskites: Solar power revolutionary or cleantech fad?

In the year since the Inflation Reduction Act supercharged clean energy manufacturing, rarely does a week go by without a new solar factory notice. Rich incentives have led to unprecedented investments.

But making solar panels is really hard. Not only does it require a lot of energy, but complicated global supply chains leave profit margins razor thin. And existing technology is bumping up against theoretical efficiency limits.

Industry heavyweights see perovskite solar cells as the heir apparent to the crystalline chemistries that currently dominate global supply. They're betting that perovskites will offer a domestically produced, higher-efficiency, flexible, and cheaper alternative.

The perovskite revolution is not without its detractors, though. Sizeable achievements are needed to take perovskites from labs to commercial viability.

Episode 57 of the Factor This! podcast features Joseph Berry, a Senior Research Fellow at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Paul Warley, the CEO of Ascent, a company working to commercialize perovskites for agriculture and space applications.

Perovskites could be the missing link as terawatt-scale solar and broad decarbonization are pursued. Or, they could end up on the proverbial ash heap of history. Which is it?
