    📝 Podcast Summary

Getting to know Governor Ron DeSantis on a personal level

Governor Ron DeSantis has established himself as a credible policy advocate and administrator. However, many people still don't know him personally. Jordan Peterson aimed to address this by getting to know DeSantis on a personal level during their conversation. DeSantis grew up in Dunedin, a town in Florida with a population of around 30,000. He had a working-class upbringing, with his father working in the steel mills and his mother being a nurse. Despite humble beginnings, DeSantis worked hard and ultimately became the governor of Florida. The town of Dunedin also had a special connection to Canada through the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays, which played a significant role in DeSantis' upbringing. Overall, the conversation aimed to shed light on DeSantis' personal background and experiences.

From Little League to Governor: Ron DeSantis's Journey

Ron DeSantis's love for athletics, particularly baseball, played a crucial role in shaping his life. From a young age, he excelled in sports and had the opportunity to compete at a high level, even making it to the Little League World Series. His talent in baseball eventually led him to Yale University on a scholarship. While baseball taught him the importance of teamwork, it also instilled in him a sense of individual responsibility and the drive to succeed on his own. This combination of team-oriented thinking and individual determination has likely contributed to his success in various endeavors, including his current role as governor.

The Power of a Strong Team in Achieving Success

Building a successful team is crucial for achieving significant accomplishments. Ron DeSantis emphasizes the importance of having a supporting cast and teammates who can implement ideas and contribute to success. He recognizes that individual achievement is essential, but it is the collective efforts of a team that ultimately lead to great outcomes. DeSantis acknowledges the need for a strong vision and making informed decisions, but the execution and implementation depend on the supporting cast. This lesson extends beyond the realm of sports and is applicable to various areas of life, including leadership roles. Genuine leaders, like DeSantis, focus on listening, team building, and providing opportunities for others, rather than hoarding all the power and credit for themselves.

Balancing delegation, corrective action, and resilience in leadership

Being a good leader requires setting a vision and expectations, while giving people the freedom to do their jobs without micromanaging. However, there is a flip side to delegation, as sometimes the job may not get done or people may stray from the vision. In such cases, it is important to take corrective action, which may involve replacing personnel or implementing internal course corrections. Additionally, it is crucial to praise people publicly and address issues privately, without throwing anyone under the bus. When building a team, especially in government or a conservative perspective, it is essential to understand that there will be resistance and blowback from established order and the media. It takes intestinal fortitude to resist the desire to be liked and to handle the stress that comes with attacks.

Embracing attacks as a positive sign

Facing attacks and negative attention can actually be a positive sign that you are making a difference and striking at the core of something that matters. Governor Ron DeSantis shares that when you stand up for what you believe in and speak the truth, you can expect blowback and criticism. However, he sees this as a confirmation that he is on the right track. It is a different psychological perspective where the most vicious attacks become an indication of making an impact. Instead of taking it personally, he uses these attacks as motivation to continue fighting for what he believes in. This mindset allows him to withstand the storm and not let it affect his personal relationships or self-esteem.

Ron DeSantis: Nurturing Conservative Ideals amidst Liberal Education.

Ron DeSantis developed his conservative philosophy through his studies in history and his exploration of the enduring truths that shaped the founding of America. Despite attending liberal and leftist institutions like Yale and Harvard Law School, DeSantis rebelled against the militant leftism he encountered on campus and gravitated towards ideas that he believed truly mattered. He focused on studying the Federalist Papers, the Constitution, and other key sources that influenced the country's foundation. This emphasis on understanding the philosophical and historical roots of America allowed DeSantis to develop and defend his conservative beliefs, even amidst a predominantly liberal environment. It highlights the importance of intellectual curiosity and the exploration of enduring truths in the face of ideological opposition.

    Contrasting Ideologies: Left vs Conservatives

In short, one big takeaway from these statements is that there is a stark contrast between the ideologies and values of the political left and conservatives. Ron DeSantis reflects on his experience at Yale and how the environment was filled with anti-Americanism and left-wing ideologies that were often favored by the affluent or trust fund kids. On the other hand, DeSantis, along with Jordan Peterson, highlights the importance of preserving the founding principles of the United States and the idea of liberty. They argue that these principles can provide an alternative to the utopian visions presented by radical leftists, particularly for the working class. This suggests that the conservative perspective values patriotism, God-fearing beliefs, and a limited role of government in order to preserve freedom.

The impact of government on the working class and the importance of limited government.

The role of government and the power it holds significantly impacts the opportunities and well-being of the working class. Jordan Peterson and Ron DeSantis express concerns about the negative effects of a bloated government, especially on the working class. They argue that limited government allows for more individual freedom, economic opportunity, and a better chance to escape poverty. They point out the dangers of relying on centralized planning and unelected bureaucrats, which can lead to a culture of dependency and hinder upward mobility. Additionally, they highlight the need to exercise power in accordance with the constitution and to challenge the growth of government agencies. Ron DeSantis' success in eliminating two agencies in Florida demonstrates that managing and reducing the size of colossal organizations is possible.

Governor Ron DeSantis advocates for shrinking and streamlining government, highlighting Florida as a prime example of efficient service delivery with a smaller budget.

Governor Ron DeSantis emphasizes the need to reduce the size and scope of government. He believes that many aspects of the government are unnecessary and can be trimmed down, while still maintaining the core functions. DeSantis points out that despite having the lowest cost per state employee and a smaller number of state employees per capita, Florida offers better services compared to states with larger budgets like New York. He argues that cutting taxes and reducing government debt while improving services is possible. DeSantis also highlights the importance of effectively managing the process of downsizing, ensuring that personnel are ready for ratification, utilizing executive actions, and working with key members of Congress. Ultimately, he believes that reducing both the size and scope of government is essential.

Ron DeSantis: Prioritizing Education Reform and Protecting Parental Rights in Florida

Ron DeSantis is prioritizing educational reform in Florida. He is focused on protecting the rights of parents, ensuring transparency in curriculum, and providing school choice regardless of income. DeSantis rejects the federal government's interference in state affairs, including their attempt to enforce policies like allowing biological men in women's sports. Florida has implemented measures to combat critical race theory and gender ideology in elementary schools, emphasizing core academic subjects and American civics. They have even implemented a program for teachers to receive a bonus for completing a course on the intellectual roots of America. DeSantis recognizes the importance of educating students about their responsibilities as citizens to safeguard freedom and preserve the republic.

Promoting Academic Integrity and Conservative Perspectives in Education

Ron DeSantis emphasizes the importance of academic institutions focusing on preparing students to be good citizens and pursuing truth rather than being hijacked by ideological indoctrination. He believes in bringing a more balanced approach to academics, presenting views that are not necessarily politically correct or aligned with leftist orthodoxy. DeSantis has taken steps to support conservative perspectives in colleges and universities, appointing conservatives to leadership positions and creating centers for public policy. He also highlights the significance of media presence and information flow in a presidential campaign, as well as the opportunity to articulate conservative policies and contrast them with the failures of other states. Overall, DeSantis aims to reflect the mission and interests of the state in academic institutions and communicate his message effectively to voters.

Ron DeSantis: A Record of Leadership and Delivering on Promises

Governor Ron DeSantis believes his record of fighting for people sets him apart from other Republican contenders. He emphasizes that he doesn't cave in the face of opposition and has won battles and elections in the past. Winning is important, but delivering on promises is the missing ingredient. DeSantis also stresses the need for true leadership, doing what's right even when it's not easy. He aims to address crucial issues such as stopping the border invasion, reducing bureaucracy, and maximizing energy production. With a demonstrated record of leadership and a vision that people can rally around, DeSantis believes he can bring about positive change if elected as the Republican candidate for the next presidential election.

    442. BILL C-63 - Everything You Need to Know | Bruce Pardy & Konstantin Kisin

    442. BILL C-63 - Everything You Need to Know | Bruce Pardy & Konstantin Kisin

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down in-person with Canadian lawyer Bruce Pardy and podcaster Konstantin Kisin. They discuss Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Bill C-63 (aka The Online Harms Act), what powers it gives to the government, what rights it strips from citizens, and why even Americans should be concerned.

Bruce Pardy is executive director of Rights Probe, a law and liberty thinktank, and professor of law at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He is a lawyer, academic, columnist, and outspoken critic of the illiberal managerial state, fighting at the front lines of the culture war inside the law. Bruce writes for the National Post, Epoch Times, and the Brownstone Institute, among others, and serves as senior fellow at the Fraser Institute, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, and the Frontier Centre for Public Policy. He has taught at law schools in Canada, the United States and New Zealand, practiced civil litigation in Toronto, and served as adjudicator and mediator on the Ontario Environmental Tribunal. The legal ground, Bruce has written, is shifting beneath our feet. The individual is losing to the collective. An ever-expanding bureaucracy regulates life from cradle to grave, including private behavior and speech, in the name of common good. The law has become discretionary, arbitrary, and unequal. The end of Western liberal civilization, as we have known it, is conceivable.

Konstantin Kisin is a Russian-British satirist, social commentator, and co-host of the TRIGGERnometry Youtube show. He is also the author of “An Immigrant's Love Letter to the West,” a Sunday Times bestseller. He has written for several publications, including Quillette, The Spectator, The Daily Telegraph, and Standpoint, on issues relating to tech censorship, woke culture, comedy, and other topics, but he currently publishes articles on his popular Substack. Kisin made headlines in 2018 when he refused to sign a "safe space contract" to perform comedy at a British college and again in 2023 when he participated in an Oxford Union debate on the motion of "This House Believes Woke Culture Has Gone Too Far." His speech at the debate received viral attention and has been seen by over 100 million people around the world.
