An estimated 85% of women experience symptoms of menopause that vary from hot flashes to weight gain, brain fog, low mood, sex drive, chronic fatigue, and more. Recognizing menopause as a gradual, uniquely personal transition rather than an abrupt change is crucial. This insight can help empower women to take proactive, supportive measures early on, ensuring a smoother journey through this natural phase of life.

Today, Dr. Cindy Geyer from the UltraWellness Center joins me as we unravel the Functional Medicine perspective and approach to menopause. Our conversation highlights the crucial role of lab testing in uncovering the root causes of symptoms, paving the way for tailored nutrition and lifestyle interventions. Moreover, we critically examine the limitations of traditional medical approaches and discuss the nuances of hormone replacement therapy, the different forms, and who may benefit the most from this treatment.

Dr. Cindy Geyer received her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. She joined The Ultrawellness Center in 2021 after practicing and serving as the medical director at Canyon Ranch for 23 years.

Are Your Hormones Out Of Balance? | Know Your Numbers

This episode is brought to you by Essentia and Cozy Earth.

Conventional medicine often fails us when it comes to hormonal imbalances. Hormones aren’t commonly tested, and many of the symptoms of imbalance are written off to aging and never addressed. Our hormones are like a symphony, with each one acting as a specialized instrument to keep our bodies in tune. Unbalanced hormones can lead to impaired mood, poor sleep, memory difficulties, sexual problems, and more. Get your hormones back in balance, and these problems usually disappear.

In today’s episode of a new series I’m calling Know Your Numbers, I dive deep into male and female sex hormones. I discuss what you should measure to understand your hormonal health in a whole new way, the difference between conventional and optimal lab ranges, and much more.

You can test your hormonal health with Function Health, a company I co-founded. It has been a lifelong dream for me. 227 - Children and the menopause: the importance of talking

227 - Children and the menopause: the importance of talking

In this episode, Dr Louise speaks to the youngest of her three daughters, Lucy, about all things menopause. Lucy, 12, recalls making her mother an HRT tote bag when she was six, plus hiding in her room when there were arguments at home, when Dr Louise was struggling with her symptoms.

Lucy shares her experience of having her mum in the public eye, gives Dr Louise sage advice for dealing with bullies and offers her views on why menopausal women need help to remain in the workplace. In a survey conducted for her book, Dr Louise discovered 75% of women had never discussed menopause in their home when they were growing up. Barriers included a lack of knowledge, embarrassment, lack of communication, being short on time and feelings of shame around the topic.

While Lucy has had lots of conversations about the menopause at home, she reveals that school education on the subject was limited. But conversations with children about the menopause are important as they can help normalise it.

This World Menopause Month, help us start the most menopause conversations – ever. Everyone’s menopause is individual and to help others understand and manage their menopause, we must break taboos, educate and start the conversation.

    How to get involved

    1. Have a conversation about the menopause
    2. Log your conversation on the balance app or website
    3. Share that you’ve got involved by tagging us on social media, using the hashtag #PauseToTalk

#392 Menopause: How To Burn Fat, Sleep Better & Live In Harmony With Your Hormones with Dr Mindy Pelz

CAUTION: This podcast discusses fasting, and its advice may not be suitable for anyone with an eating disorder. If you have an existing health condition or are taking medication, always consult your healthcare practitioner before going for prolonged periods without eating.

I first spoke to today’s guest on Episode 342 - and that episode has become one of the most downloaded episodes of the year - it has transformed the lives of many women - and men and I think this conversation will do the same.

Dr Mindy Pelz is a nutrition expert, a pioneer on the subject of women’s health & hormones, and the author of Fast Like A Girl and The Menopause ResetGet Rid of Your Symptoms and Feel Like Your Younger Self Again.

Mindy’s aim is to empower women by explaining the biological changes that take place each month and throughout a woman’s life. She believes that, armed with that knowledge, they can improve their health, happiness and relationships. But this conversation is just as relevant for men.

We discuss whether weight gain is inevitable as we age. Is it our fate – and particularly a woman’s fate – to gain weight once she hits 40? It can be, she tells me, but only if women don’t know how to harness their hormones to prevent it. She explains how declining oestrogen levels can make women insulin resistant which may be one the reasons why the diet and lifestyle that worked for them in their 20s and 30s, no longer does once they hit 40.

At the same time, declining levels of progesterone, the calming hormone, can result in lower-quality sleep, more perceived stress and increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol - which, in and of itself, will contribute to an increase in belly fat. It makes so much sense when Mindy explains it, but unfortunately, this information is still not widely known.

We cover so many different topics, including:

    • How to adjust when and what you eat during different phases of your cycle.
    • The importance of gut health when thinking about hormonal health.
    • Why women often handle stress in a different way to men.
    • The impact that hormonal changes can have on brain function.
    • The practical steps we can take to improve our sleep.
    • The importance of lifestyle changes irrespective of whether a woman chooses to have HRT or not.
    • The best times in a woman’s cycle to resolve conflict and deal with relationship issues.

This episode is jam-packed with insightful information and practical take-homes. I hope you enjoy listening.

In her well-known #MedicalMonday, Frankie posted a weekly poll on her Instagram to allow people to ask health-related questions, each time focusing on a different topic. Frankie’s profile in this space began to grow, and as a result Frankie now also makes regular appearances to disseminate her knowledge, becoming an enthusiastic public speaker for general preventative health.

Although there are many things I’d love to discuss with Dr Frankie, today we share a conversation about training, nutrition and the female menstrual cycle,. The episode covers the entire cycle story, exploring what a ‘normal cycle’ looks like, when ovulation occurs, and how to identify important changes that sometimes signal significant health problems. Dr Frankie also discusses how a women's strength may be affected by constantly changing hormone levels, and how we can adjust our training and nutrition to reach our full potential at any point in our cycle.

This episode is important for both men and women, so if you're a female (or know one), I strongly recommend you listen...

189 - Joeli Brearley from Pregnant Then Screwed

189 - Joeli Brearley from Pregnant Then Screwed

Two important issues for women come together in this episode of the Dr Louise Newson Podcast featuring guest Joeli Brearley. Joeli founded the charity Pregnant Then Screwed after she was fired from her job the day after telling her employers she was pregnant. Joeli wanted to create a space for others to share their stories of discrimination at work, which quickly grew into Pregnant Then Screwed, a charity dedicated to ending the motherhood penalty and campaigning for change.

Joeli shares a personal story of her own changing hormones in her late 30s; she recounts her struggle to be listened to by healthcare professionals and to find the right treatment for her symptoms that were exacerbated by progesterone intolerance.

Joeli’s three tips for women who think they might be perimenopausal:

    1. Talk to other women, it’s a great way to find out really useful information
    2. Keep going and don’t give up. Trust in yourself and how you know you’re feeling. Keep pushing for what you feel you need.
    3. If you don’t feel well and feel like you’re going mad after having the Mirena coil fitted, tell your healthcare professional. You could have a sensitivity to the progestogen in it and there may be a better alternative method for you.
