    Derek Villaceran - Jumping from Pharmaceutical Science to Public Health, Volunteering Experiences, Personal Values, Top 3 Public Health Challenges and Solutions

    Derek Villaceran is a Public Health student at Monash University, with a passion for people, health and science. He’s a Workshop Facilitator at Respectful Communities, in which he promotes anti-racism and addresses gender-based violence to create a safe and inclusive environment. Apart from that, Derek is the 2023 President of Monash Health Science Society (MHSS) - aims to raise awareness of public health and support Health Science and Public Health students at Monash. He’s also a Peer Assisted Study Sessions Leader (PASS Leader), who develops lesson plans and facilitates optional tutorials for first-year Pharmaceutical Science students in Physiology, focusing on active learning.

    In this episode, we will be chatting about Derek’s course transfer from Pharmaceutical Science to Public Health. Then we’ll take a deep dive into Public Health to see what the main branches are, how they fit into society, the top 3 challenges that we’re facing, and what we can do to solve those problems. We’ll also chat about Derek’s volunteering experiences, values, and how all these aspects complement his Public Health journey.

    Samuel Montalvo - From Sports to Stanford University: Martial Arts, Physical Training, Academic Performance and Quarter-life Crisis

    Samuel Montalvo - From Sports to Stanford University: Martial Arts, Physical Training, Academic Performance and Quarter-life Crisis

    Samuel Montalvo, Ph.D., CSCS., CPSS., is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Sports Biomechanist with a focus on creating new practical training methods to improve human exercise and sports performance. He is also a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance and at Stanford Cardiovascular Institute of Stanford School of Medicine. Apart from that, Sam is a Coach at Strength and Fitness Lead at 720 Martial Arts Academy. He is a 5-time International Wushu medalist with diverse experiences in Wushu, Gymnastics, Tricking and so much more.


    In this episode, we chat about Sam’s backstory: how he got into sports, became a coach, and made his way to Stanford University. We also touch on the connection between physical training and academic performance, as well as how he tackles quarter-life crisis and many other challenges in life.

    Christine Tolotchkov is an R&D formulation scientist at Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC). Christine is an experienced public speaker with more than 1000 followers and over 500 connections on LinkedIn, and a guest Speaker for employability week at Monash Uni, where she organises workshops to help students stand out on LinkedIn. She is also a Co-founder and Director of Dose of Pharma vodcast - sharing bite-sized discussions on personal development, student life, pharmaceutical world and STEM career pathways. Apart from that, she has got various volunteering experiences, one of which is with STEM Sisters a group of culturally and linguistically diverse women who find approaches to empower women of colour in STEM

    Giang Nguyen - Navigating Diverse Pathways: Job Search, Impostor Syndrome, Volunteering, Autism and Multiculturalism in Mental Health

    Giang Nguyen is a third-year Psychology student at Swinburne University of Technology, with many volunteering experiences: a research assistant at Swinburne University, a volunteer for Umeed Psychology - an organisation that is dedicated to promoting multicultural mental health - and a mentor for Raise Foundation - mentoring teenagers. Her work revolves around supporting children and teenagers with their play-based learning, creating a non-judgemental space for young people with disabilities to be themselves, nurturing their talents, and building meaningful relationships with families. She is hoping to help highlight the need for multiculturalism in mental health and to learn more about policy work so that she can bring more beneficial changes to our community in the future.

    In this episode, Giang will be sharing her job-hunting process, imposter syndrome, and how to start her volunteering journey as a psychology student. We also discuss autism, multiculturalism, and potential challenges in mental health.

    (Bessie) Chunyi Qian - Performance, Self-Discipline, Motivation and Consistency In Martial Arts Training

    (Bessie) Chunyi Qian is a third year Pharmaceutical Science student at Monash University, with a growing passion for structural biology. She had a vacation internship experience at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). She’s also a Dean’s Scholar with Monas h International Merit Scholarship and a Monash Parkville Student Union (MPSU) President.

    Outside of university, she is a dedicated wushu trainee with more than 1.5 years of consistent practice. In this episode, she highlights the motivation and strategies behind her training. Bessie also unveils the transformative power of martial arts, from the practice floor to life's challenges, and how training has enhanced performance, resilience, focus and determination throughout her journey.
