    • Challenging the Narrative: Natural vs. Unnatural in Fitness AchievementsHard work and dedication are essential in achieving fitness goals, and it is important to recognize and respect individuals' efforts rather than focusing on questioning their authenticity.

People's obsession with questioning whether someone is natural or not in terms of their fitness accomplishments is largely unfounded. Nick Bare, who is widely successful in the fitness industry, has faced constant scrutiny and accusations of not being natural. However, he has consistently maintained that he is indeed natural and has even shared blood work to prove it. It's important to recognize that hard work and dedication play a significant role in achieving fitness goals. Sahil Bloom supports this notion by emphasizing that individuals who excel in the gym have likely put in extra effort and consistently outworked others over a significant period of time. While genetics certainly play a role, it is unfair and a cop out to attribute someone's achievements solely to unnatural means. Ultimately, it is necessary to appreciate and respect the hard work of individuals rather than questioning their authenticity.

    • The Role of Genetics in Physical Appearance and Athletic AbilityGenetics play a significant role in determining physical attributes and athletic performance, but consistent effort and a disciplined lifestyle are also crucial for achieving personal fitness success.

Genetics play a significant role in determining physical appearance and athletic ability. The conversation between Nick Bare, Sam Parr, and Sahil Bloom highlights the impact of genetics on their respective bodies and performance. While all three individuals may have similar work ethic, diet, and training programs, their genetic differences result in varying outcomes. Nick's family members, for instance, possess remarkable physical attributes even without using any supplements. This demonstrates that genetics cannot be overlooked. However, it is important to note that consistent effort in terms of training, recovery, and diet also contributes to achieving the best possible results within one's genetic potential. Ultimately, understanding and embracing one's genetics while maintaining a disciplined lifestyle can lead to personal fitness success.

    • Achieving Ambitious Goals and Gaining Confidence through Dedication and EffortSetting ambitious goals, putting in consistent effort, and embracing the process of succeeding and failing contribute to personal growth and enhance satisfaction in reaching milestones.

Setting ambitious goals and consistently putting in the necessary effort can lead to an unparalleled sense of achievement and confidence. This is evident in both Sahil and Nick's experiences. Sahil's dedication to running and publicly sharing his progress not only holds him accountable, but also provides him with a strong support system. When he crossed the finish line and achieved his sub-3 marathon goal, the rush of emotions was overwhelming. Similarly, Nick's commitment to pushing his limits and achieving his goals in races has built his confidence over time. The process of succeeding and failing, winning and losing, contributes to personal growth and enhances the satisfaction of reaching milestones. This highlights the importance of continuously challenging oneself to strive for more and reap the rewards of hard work.

    • Changing Your Self-Identity and Building Confidence Through RoutineIdentify as a winner, prove it to yourself by waking up early and exercising consistently. Personal circumstances differ, find routines that work best for you.

Changing your self-identity and creating evidence of your success can significantly impact your happiness and overall position in life. Sahil Bloom suggests that if you're not satisfied with your current state, start identifying as a winner and prove it to yourself. One effective way to do this is by waking up early and working out consistently. Although it may be challenging, this routine helps to alter your perception of yourself and build confidence. On the other hand, Sam Parr feels guilty because he doesn't wake up as early as Sahil and Nick. However, it's important to remember that personal circumstances differ, and it's about finding routines that work best for individual situations.

    • Balancing experiences, investments, and financial decisionsFinding a balance between enjoying experiences and making wise financial choices is crucial. Moderation in alcohol consumption, prioritizing income growth, budgeting, and being mindful of expenses are key aspects of maintaining financial well-being.

Finding a balance is key when it comes to experiences and lifestyle choices. Both Nick and Sahil agree that alcohol can enhance certain experiences and create a more relaxed atmosphere. However, they also emphasize the importance of moderation and not relying on alcohol as a sole source of enjoyment. They both acknowledge that prioritizing increasing income and building revenue streams is essential for long-term financial wealth. Sahil specifically mentions the value of tracking an index and not constantly monitoring investments. Additionally, they discuss the significance of budgeting and being mindful of expenses, with Sam considering a move to a more affordable location. Ultimately, the takeaway is about maintaining a balanced approach to experiences, investments, and financial decisions.

    • Achieve a solid workout in just 45 minutes to an hour by incorporating both cardiovascular conditioning and strength training into your routine. You can achieve health and fitness goals by spending just 45 minutes to an hour per day on a workout that combines cardiovascular and strength training exercises.

When it comes to health and fitness, many people wrongly believe that they need to spend hours exercising each day. The truth is, you can achieve a solid workout in just 45 minutes to an hour by splitting your time between strength and endurance training. It's important to incorporate both cardiovascular conditioning and strength training into your routine. For cardiovascular conditioning, aim for 70 to 80% of your training to be in the aerobic zone, such as walking, hiking, or jogging, with 20 to 30% being high-intensity interval training. When it comes to strength training, a push-pull-leg split can be effective, focusing on upper body pushing and pulling movements, as well as lower body exercises. Remember, you don't need to spend excessive time each day to see results.

    • Consistency and enjoyment are key to fitness success.Small, incremental changes and finding sustainable and enjoyable ways to stay consistent with fitness are more effective than extreme diets or exercise fads.

Consistency and finding enjoyment in your workouts and fitness routine is key. Nick Bare emphasizes the importance of keeping cardiovascular and strength training separate, finding what works best for you. Trying extreme diets or exercise fads may not bring about the transformative changes people expect. Instead, focusing on small, incremental changes such as eating better, drinking more water, and being more active through daily habits and routines can make a significant difference. Sahil Bloom's experience with running further supports this idea, as he gained a newfound respect for endurance athletes and discovered the dedication and monotony involved in training. Ultimately, finding sustainable and enjoyable ways to stay consistent with fitness is what leads to long-term success.

    • The Evolution of Running: From Trend to Mental Fortitude and RespectRunning has transformed from a popular trend during the pandemic into a challenging pursuit, requiring mental fortitude, and gaining recognition and respect.

Running has evolved into a popular and macho activity, especially during the pandemic when gyms were closed. Sahil Bloom and Nick Bare discuss how running has become a trend, with people transitioning from strength training to running for both their physical and mental health. The perception of runners has vastly changed, with runners now seen as badass athletes, even those with a bodybuilder or strength athlete physique. The running world has also seen disruptive and aggressive races, such as the underground Speed Project and the challenging Barkley Marathons. These races require mental fortitude and push runners beyond their limits. Overall, running has become a diverse and challenging pursuit that is gaining recognition and respect.

    • Customizing Training for Optimal Fitness SuccessTailoring a specialized training program for specific goals is crucial, but allowing room for flexibility and taking into account individual needs and recovery is equally important for long-term fitness success.

Fitness goals and training programs can vary depending on individual preferences and specific objectives. Nick Bare emphasizes the importance of following a specialized program when training for a specific goal, such as a marathon, and sticking to it diligently. On the other hand, outside of such focused training periods, there is room for flexibility and auto-regulation, where one adjusts their training based on recovery and how their body feels. Sahil Bloom highlights the value of having someone else write programs and the added accountability that comes with paying for them. Ultimately, the key is to find what works best for you, whether it's following strict programs or incorporating more flexibility, in order to achieve your fitness goals.

    • The Importance of Tracking Nutrition & Finding Reliable SourcesTracking nutrition and finding reliable sources are crucial for individuals starting their health and fitness journey. It helps them learn about serving sizes, macronutrients, and total calories, while also ensuring accurate portion control and access to trustworthy information.

Tracking nutrition can be highly beneficial for individuals starting their health and fitness journey. It helps them learn about serving sizes, macronutrients, and total calories. Sam Parr shares his experience with nutrition coaching and how it guilted him into following his plan, as well as educating him on important aspects of nutrition like protein intake. He also mentions the value of weighing food for accurate portion control, which he learned from Nick Bare's videos. When it comes to finding reliable sources, Nick mentions Layne Norton as someone he trusts for a science-based approach to health and nutrition. He also emphasizes the importance of doing personal research and reading peer-reviewed literature. Additionally, Sam recommends using perplexity, a platform that reviews and summarizes various studies for easier access to reliable information.

    • Diverse sources of knowledge and the significance of trust in acquiring information and building relationships.Access to various sources and evaluating trust are vital in gaining knowledge, while proving oneself and the influence of experts contribute to success in specific fields.

Individuals have various sources for acquiring knowledge and information, even during physical activities like running. While some may prefer audiobooks or self-help books, others rely on resources like examine.com and Pub Med for fitness-related information. Additionally, the conversation highlights the importance of trust and evaluating relationships, particularly in professional settings. Trust is not solely based on the absence of lying, stealing, or cheating, but also on the ability to perform in the expected role. The exchange also touches upon the idea of proving oneself and earning respect in certain circles, as well as the influence of trainers or coaches in specific domains, such as Eric Cressey in the field of baseball performance training.

    • A Variety of Fitness Influencers Catering to Different Needs and PreferencesFitness influencers offer valuable advice and resources for different fitness levels and goals, gaining recognition from both the general public and celebrities.

There is a wide range of fitness influencers and experts who offer valuable advice for different needs and preferences. From Sahil Bloom's admiration for guys who hit absolute tanks in terms of fitness, to Ben Bruno's practical and implementable training for regular people, and Zach's flexible dieting recipes that allow for delicious but healthy meals. Jordan Syatt is also recognized for his general health and fitness information. These individuals have carved out their niches and built strong followings on social media platforms like Instagram. Their expertise and influence have even caught the attention of celebrities like Justin Timberlake. Overall, these fitness and health influencers provide a variety of resources and tips to cater to different fitness levels and goals.

    • Overcoming Doubts and Achieving Remarkable ResultsProgression, determination, and a strong mindset are crucial for achieving goals. With dedication and perseverance, anyone can surpass expectations and achieve remarkable results. Learn from past mistakes and have a proper training program.

Progression and determination are key factors in achieving your goals. Nick Bare's journey from a 4-hour marathon to a sub-3-hour marathon exemplifies this. Despite initial doubts and setbacks, he continued to train and improve, eventually surpassing expectations. It highlights the power of a strong mindset and mental resilience in overcoming physical challenges. Nick's experience also emphasizes the importance of having a proper training program and learning from past mistakes. Along the way, he faced skepticism from others, but his unwavering belief in himself and his ability to mentally overcome obstacles led to his success. This story serves as a reminder that with dedication and perseverance, anyone can exceed their own expectations and achieve remarkable results.

    • The importance of pacing, endurance, and strength training in long-distance runningProper training, dedication, and efficient body mechanics can help anyone achieve their goals in running, regardless of size or body weight.

Proper pacing and endurance are key in long-distance running. Both Sahil and Nick admit that they made the mistake of going out too fast during their marathons, resulting in difficulty maintaining their pace and ultimately missing their time goals. They also discuss the concept of hitting "the wall," which refers to the point where the body's energy stores are depleted and fatigue sets in. Additionally, Nick's experience highlights the importance of strength training and maintaining a healthy body weight to improve performance and prevent injuries. Despite their size or body weight, both Nick and Sahil have achieved impressive times in marathons, showcasing that with proper training, dedication, and efficient body mechanics, anyone can accomplish their goals in running.

    • Setting multiple goals for success and motivation.Having backup goals in different areas of life allows for flexibility, adaptability, and a shift in focus when things don't go as planned. It's important to avoid an all-or-nothing mindset and embrace resilience in pursuit of one's goals.

Setting multiple goals can be a game-changer in achieving success and staying motivated. Nick Bare and Sahil Bloom emphasize the importance of having an A, B, and C goal in various aspects of life. Whether it's running a marathon or pursuing a fitness goal, having backup goals allows for flexibility and adaptability when things don't go as planned. It's about shifting focus and finding alternative ways to stay on track and motivated. The mindset of all or nothing can hinder progress and lead to self-destruction. Additionally, the phenomenon of forgetting the pain and challenges experienced in the pursuit of a goal is common among runners, showing the power of resilience and the desire to push oneself further.

    • Combining Expertise in Supplements and Compelling Media ContentNick Bare's success lies in his ability to excel in creating high-quality supplements and captivating media content, relying on intuition and believing in the potential of his projects.

Nick Bare has successfully combined his expertise in creating high-quality supplements with his ability to create compelling media content. While many companies struggle to excel in both areas, Bare has managed to not only produce top-notch supplements, but also create captivating documentaries and videos that resonate with his audience. His media team, led by his creative director Jordan, has played a crucial role in this success. Despite not relying heavily on financial data to make business decisions, Bare trusts his intuition and gut feeling when it comes to investing in his team and content creation. Although measuring the exact ROI may be challenging, Bare's ability to sense momentum and believe in the potential of his projects has proven to be effective.

    • The Challenges of Separating Personal Branding from a CompanyMaintaining a strong vision and brand identity is crucial when considering separating personal branding from a company to avoid loss of vision and brand confusion.

Separating personal branding from a company can have its challenges and may not always be the best strategy. Nick Bare initially separated his Nick Bare Fitness business and Bare Performance Nutrition (VPN) business, but found that it created a loss of vision and brand. He realized that the separation made no sense and brought everything back into one entity. While there are still separate teams working on different projects, there is crossover and the lines between personal branding and the company are blurrier than before. This experience highlights the importance of maintaining a strong vision and brand identity, and considering the potential consequences and challenges of separating personal branding from a company.

    • Building a Brand and Business with a Long-Term PerspectiveFocus on enjoying the process of building a brand and business, rather than solely on financial gain or reaching milestones. Slow and steady progress over time leads to long-term success.

Building a brand and business takes time, consistency, and a focus on personal enjoyment rather than solely on financial gain. Nick Bare emphasizes the importance of building a brand that he is proud of, regardless of its effect on valuation or the end process. He prioritizes enjoying the process and creating content that he is passionate about, rather than focusing solely on key performance indicators and milestones. This dedication and long-term perspective have allowed him to create a successful brand and generate income outside of his main business. Additionally, Sahil Bloom highlights the power of time as a lever for growth, emphasizing the importance of slow and steady progress in achieving long-term success.

    • Recognizing skills and delegating tasks to achieve business success.Success in business requires recognizing your skills, delegating tasks you don't enjoy, and trusting and effectively navigating partnerships and collaborations.

It is important to recognize your own skills and abilities when building a business or pursuing your goals. Nick Bare realized that he had all the necessary skills to take his business to the top and didn't need to rely on others to do it for him. He understood that he needed to be consistent and dedicated for a long period of time to see the results he wanted. However, he also acknowledged the importance of delegating tasks that he didn't enjoy, such as people management and finances, allowing him to focus on what he truly loved, like creating content and building his brand. Furthermore, Sam Parr learned that being a good partner to a CEO requires trust and the ability to let go of control, understanding that they may bring their own perspectives and ideas to the table. It is crucial to manage each other effectively and navigate the challenges of collaboration. Ultimately, success lies in making the right decisions most of the time, rather than being right all the time.

    • The importance of maintaining passion and soul in every aspect of the creative processStaying true to your passion and being personally involved can lead to long-term success in business and creative endeavors.

In short, one big takeaway from this conversation is the importance of maintaining your passion and soul in every aspect of your creative process, regardless of the challenges that may arise. Building a business and being an entrepreneur may seem romanticized and easy from the outside, but it requires consistent work ethic and prioritizing the growth of your business. It's not always about doing things the efficient way; sometimes, taking the hard way and micromanaging every detail can lead to greater success. Jerry Seinfeld's example of writing every episode of Seinfeld highlights the significance of having your soul in your work. So, whether it's running a business or creating content, staying true to your passion and being personally involved can lead to long-term success.

The SHIFT Podcast - Episode 6 - Reframing Selfish Series - From Self-Sacrifice to Self-Care

We began this conversation in our last episode, with conversation unfolding to shine light on how as a society, we have made it more acceptable to opt in to self-abandonment over self-love.

We are continuing to reframe the concept of “Selfish” and to strip away the negative nuance around the idea of making our well-being and proactive self-care a priority.

This week we have a special guest co-host filling in for Diane while she plays out in the wilderness - talk about the ultimate self-care!

Dr. Brook Sheehan DC joins Trish in the co-host chair for Episode 6 to continue this conversation, offering us a fresh perspective on self-care in the context of both motherhood and her work as “The Body Whisperer”, and how our body is constantly communicating with us to let us know what it needs.

Dr. Brook is a Chiropractor Extraordinaire who speaks the language of the body (as opposed to body language), and helps her patients by taking the guesswork out of health by helping them discover what their body is seeking to do its work. Dr. Brook also hosts her own podcast called “The Body Talks” Podcast, also airing on the Transformation Talk Radio Network as part of our “World’s Best” Network of Collaborators - The Kornelia Stephanie Media Group.

On this episode we’ll dive deeper into the self-care component by discussing:

    • Some of the lifestyle barriers to self-care and the choices we have in navigating those
    • Why it is important to start being proactive in our self-care practice and stop sacrificing our well-being
    • Our bodies speak to us - are we listening? Fine-tuning our Mind-Body-Spirit health
    • Sharing our stories and strategies to reclaim the top spot on our own priority list

We have everything we need inside of us already, and within reach if we take action to tune in. Integrating self-care as part of our regular routine is not only self-empowering, it benefits everyone around us as well.

This conversation is both expansive and fluid in direction as our world is in constant change.

Deconstructing the definition of “selfish” is a cultural shift that begins with us individually.

THe SHIFT begins and ends with us so please join us for this important conversation.

    Let’s do this together!

    120. Understanding your ego

    120. Understanding your ego

In this week's episode we discuss the psychology of your ego and what its trying to tell us! Ego can feel nasty and entitled but it comes from a place of deep insecurity that we need to unpack before we can truly understand ourselves. We look at the 6 signs your ego is in control, where ego comes from and how to replace it with self esteem and humility. We also discuss why ego and self confidence are different things even though they sometimes look similar: how ego is insecure, inconsistent and relies on the perceived inferiority of others whilst confidence is stable, sure and kind. Remember, you are not your ego so in this episode we talk how to rein it in, accept it as part of who we are and move forward. Listen now.
