    About this Episode

Happy Labor Day! In honor of this holiday devoted to the American worker, I thought I would do a few quotes about the value of hard work. I have talked about some of these before, and a few of them are in my gift book for coaches to give to their graduating seniors called, "Inspiration for the Graduate." However, you will also hear a couple of quotes that are not in the book and that I have not talked about before.

Replay of Episode 31 - Alan Stein Jr. Interview

Replay of Episode 31 - Alan Stein Jr. Interview

As I told you last week, over the next few weeks I am bringing you replays of popular episodes. I have some personal and professional matters that are taking up a lot of my time, and I am headed to Mexico on spring break this week, so I thought I would just let you listen to some of the more popular episodes of the show over these next few weeks.

Today you will hear one of my absolute favorite episodes. It was episode 31, which was my interview with Alan Stein, Jr. If you don't know who Alan Stein, Jr. is, look him up on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, or check out his website - alansteinjr.com

One of the cool things about Alan's quote is that it was Alan's quote! That's right - the quote that we talked about is his own quote, one that has been very popular with many coaches and teams across the nation. (Check out where the quote is emblazoned on a wall for everyone to see when they visit this place.)

Next week, I'll have another replay of a favorite episode. Until then, enjoy my interview from a few years ago with Alan Stein, Jr!

Replay of Episode 1 - Success is a Journey

Replay of Episode 1 - Success is a Journey

Today, we are going to start a few weeks of replays of popular episodes. I have some personal and professional matters that are taking up a lot of my time, and I am headed to Mexico on spring break next week, so I thought I would just let you listen to some of the more popular episodes of the show for the next few weeks.

Today you will hear the very first episode of the show. Its focus was on one of my favorite quotes throughout my teaching and coaching career. It is also under ten minutes long, as were a lot of the first episodes. Oh, how things have changed over the last four years! Anyway, I hope you enjoy Episode 1 - Success is a Journey!

    The Meaning of Life!

    The Meaning of Life!

This week I talk about a little topic called, "The Meanng of Life"! Yeah, no biggie. Just the biggest topic one could tackle, and I come at it straight on with hard-hitting, journalistic integrity that . . .

Okay, I don't do anything like that. But I do have four really good quotes for you that talk about meaning and purpose in life that I think you're going to really like. Enjoy!

Michael Caine - Use the Difficulty

Michael Caine - Use the Difficulty

This week's quote comes to us from an unlikely source. Well, I should say it's an unlikely source, only because I had not heard it until late last week. I was scrolling through my Twitter feed (Arrgghhh! I hate how Twitter sucks me in like that!), and I came across a video of the British actor, Michael Caine. I don't remember who posted the video; I thought it was Brett Ledbetter of "What Drives Winning," but I can't find the video anywhere on their site, so I'm not sure where it came from.

No matter where it came from, though, the quote and the idea behind it are outstanding, and I knew the moment I heard it that I needed to talk about it. So, you get it today!

    Moving Into the Off-Season

Today we move on from our episodes on the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team came up with for us to live by this year, and we move to some quotes the are very fitting for us moving into our off-season work to improve. This is a critical time for any team and any individual who wants to be an impactful contributor in the future.

You will hear five great quotes that will help you as you move into any time that you are working on improvement for your future.

    Core Covenants 4 - Respect

    Core Covenants 4 - Respect

Today we wrap up our episodes on the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has come up with for us to live by this year. Our first three covenants that I talked about are "Discipline," "Trust," and "Team-First Attitude."

Our final covenant is "Respect." I'm so glad my boys chose this as a covenant for a few reasons. One of the reasons I'm so glad is a selfish one—I have never really worked on the theme of Respect with my teams before, nor have I ever written or spoken on it, so it's nice to get a chance to do that.

I hope you enjoy listening to this episode about Respect as much as I enjoyed researching, writing, and then speaking about it.

    Core Covenants 3 - Team-First Attitude

    Core Covenants 3 - Team-First Attitude

Today we continue talking about the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has come up with for us to live by this year. Our first covenant that I talked about three weeks ago was "Discipline," and our second covenant that I talked about last week was "Trust." This week we move to one of my all-time favorites - "Team-First Attitude."

As a team-sport coach—basketball, soccer, football—for the last 40 years, I have preached the value of a team-first attitude to thousands of kids. It is what I love most about coaching—working to build great teams. Well, you can't have great teams without players who are committed to having a team-first attitude.

Today you will hear some ideas on a team-first attitude, and then you will hear 8 outstanding quotes about it.

    Core Covenants 2 - Trust

    Core Covenants 2 - Trust

Today we continue talking about the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has come up with for us to live by this year. Our first covenant that I talked about two weeks ago was Discipline. Our second covenant that I talk about today is Trust.

Trust is an essential ingredient for success for any team. If you don't have trust on a team, you're not going to be a team. That is one of the reasons my boys wanted it as one of our covenants.

I have a variety of quotes for you in today's episode, and then I also read some passages out of a great book I am reading right now called, "Organize Your Team Today,"  by Jason Selk and Tom Bartow. They dive into the importance of Trust in Chapter 2 of the book, and there are some excellent ideas for us all to learn from.

    Core Covenants 1 - Discipline

    Core Covenants 1 - Discipline

I have told you for a while now that I will be talking about quotes dealing with the Core Covenants that my varsity boys' basketball team has chosen for this season. This week we finally start talking about the specific Core Covenants that my team is working on this year.

Our first covenant is Discipline. You will hear 7 quotes on discipline in this episode.

For more information on Core Covenants and establishing them with your team, I highly recommend you check out Bruce Brown's booklet called, "First Steps to Creating a Successful Team—Core Covenants" at the Proactive Coaching website. You can also find a video of the concept there, or you can schedule a speaker to come to your organization to do a presentation on it.
