    enDecember 06, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • The Influence of Russell Howard's Upbringing and Family BondRussell Howard's parents and siblings have played a crucial role in shaping his personality, sense of humor, work ethic, and overall outlook on life. They are a source of pride and connection for him.

Russell Howard's parents have had a significant influence on his personality and outlook on life. His mother's joyful and funny nature has shaped his sense of humor and his ability to find laughter in difficult situations. On the other hand, his father's determination and resilience have instilled in him a strong work ethic and the belief that he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to. Russell's contrasting upbringing, with two dominant personalities, has made him who he is today. Additionally, Russell shares his close bond with his siblings, particularly his brother, with whom he played football and shares a similar sense of humor. Despite their quirks, his family is a source of pride and connection for him.

    • The Power of Humor in Connecting, Empowering, and HealingHumor can be a valuable tool for relieving tension, fostering connections, and boosting self-esteem. It has the power to bring joy, relieve stress, and offer insights into life's complexities.

Humor can serve as a powerful tool to ease tension, create connections, and build self-esteem. Russell Howard and Steven Bartlett discuss how their comedic abilities were influenced by their family dynamics and personal insecurities. They highlight how making their loved ones laugh brought joy and relieved stress, leading them to pursue comedy as a means of self-expression. Both comedians emphasize the addictive nature of making people laugh and the ability to create their own energy through humor. They also touch on the role of comedy in deflecting attention from personal flaws or insecurities. Overall, this conversation reminds us that humor has the potential to bridge gaps, heal wounds, and offer insights into the complexities of life.

    • Finding Humor in Everyday LifeComedians gather inspiration from the mundane and use it to create content. They also need to find balance in their personal lives after the thrill of performing.

Comedians often find inspiration in the everyday moments and observations of life. They collect these "dots" from society, making notes of things that stand out to them. These small observations eventually make their way into their stand-up sets or creative projects. Comedians like Russell Howard and Chris Martin find these little things intriguing and see them as potential material. The process of collecting these dots and figuring out how they form later on is a way for them to create content without starting from scratch. Additionally, after experiencing the adrenaline rush of performing, comedians need to find ways to reintegrate into everyday life and plan enjoyable activities to balance out the highs and lows of their profession.

    • Finding Your Passion: The Key to Personal FulfillmentDiscovering and pursuing your passion is essential for finding true happiness and purpose in life. Surrounding yourself with people who support and understand your passions is equally important.

Finding your passion and pursuing it is crucial for personal fulfillment. Russell Howard emphasizes how much he loves his life and the recharge he gets from holidays. He compares it to plugging in a mobile phone to recharge. On the other hand, Steven Bartlett reveals that his girlfriend is the reason he goes on holiday and explores new things. He admits that if it were up to him, he would prefer staying in the hotel room on his phone or laptop. However, he highlights the importance of being with someone who understands and supports your passions. Both individuals demonstrate the significance of having a job or hobby that you adore, as it brings true happiness and a sense of purpose. It is a reminder to seek out and embrace what truly brings joy and fulfillment in life.

    • The Power of Supportive Parents in a Comedy CareerHaving someone who believes in us and gives us the opportunity to chase our dreams can make all the difference in achieving our goals.

Pursuing a career in comedy can be a challenging and uncertain path, but having supportive parents can make a significant difference. Russell Howard's dad was not only understanding but also encouraged him to give comedy a serious try. He advised Russell to put everything into it for a year and see where it takes him. This supportive push gave Russell the motivation and deadline he needed to fully commit to his comedic aspirations. It was this dedication and hard work that eventually led to his success. This serves as a reminder that having someone believe in us and give us the opportunity to chase our dreams can make all the difference in achieving our goals.

    • The Journey to Success in ComedySuccess in comedy requires a combination of hard work, luck, and natural talent. Comedians must be willing to dedicate themselves, constantly renewing their material and seizing opportunities to build a following and impact their self-esteem.

Success in comedy requires a combination of hard work, luck, and natural talent. Comedians must be willing to dedicate themselves to their passion, even if it doesn't promise immediate financial reward or guarantee success. Hard work is essential, as is the ability to seize opportunities and listen to the audience's reactions. Comedians must constantly renew themselves, creating new material and learning from their mistakes. The feeling of making an audience laugh, receiving positive feedback, and building a following can greatly impact a comedian's self-esteem. Similar to a youth team footballer breaking into the first team, comedians must have the talent, work ethic, and clinical ability to take advantage of opportunities that come their way.

    • The Power of Silence: Comedians' Journey to Captivating an AudienceComedians face challenges and overcome failures, realizing that silence can be just as powerful as laughter in captivating an audience.

Comedians may seem to have high self-esteem when they're making people laugh, but their confidence quickly crumbles when their performances don't go well. They experience deep shame and embarrassment when they fail to make people laugh, but this motivates them to work harder and try again. Laughter is seen as a measure of truth and victory for comedians, while silence is seen as failure. However, over time, comedians learn that there is power in silence and that captivating an audience doesn't always require constant laughter. It is difficult for comedians to gauge whether they've been captivating or dull because the sound is the same, but they appreciate serious conversations that don't necessarily involve laughter.

    • Russell Howard on the Pitfalls of Seeking Validation on Social MediaStay focused on creating and sharing finished content instead of seeking validation on social media, which can be a negative and volatile space for comedy.

As a comedian, Russell Howard recognizes the importance of staying in his creative zone and not seeking validation or feedback from social media platforms like Twitter. He describes how the comic brain constantly churns out ideas and observations, often going into a fantasy land. However, he acknowledges that social media can be a volatile space where negativity and anger thrive, making it unsuitable for comedy. He explains that comedy clubs create a bonding experience where people are there specifically to laugh, whereas social media lacks this collective intention. Instead, Russell focuses on creating finished content and sharing it, avoiding the negative impact of seeking validation online.

    • The Impact of Imposter Syndrome on ComediansImposter syndrome can drive comedians to constantly improve and stay humble, but it is important to manage its psychological impact and prioritize personal well-being.

As a comedian, it is common to experience imposter syndrome, even for the best in the business. Russell Howard shares that even legends like Billy Connelly have felt nervous and doubted themselves before performances. Imposter syndrome can actually be a driving force behind becoming the best version of oneself on stage. It keeps comedians humble and constantly striving to improve. Without imposter syndrome, growth as an artist may be hindered. However, it is important to manage the psychological impact of imposter syndrome and not let it consume one's mental well-being. It is essential to leave the comedy scene on one's own terms, recognizing when the pressure becomes too much and making choices that prioritize personal health and happiness.

    • The Trade-Off of Pursuing Goals: Mental Health Implications and AnxietyPursuing success requires sacrifices and facing fears, but prioritizing mental well-being and finding balance is equally important.

Pursuing goals and achieving success often comes with a trade-off or cost. Russell Howard and Steven Bartlett discuss the mental health implications and anxiety that come with their respective careers. They acknowledge that fear can be a powerful motivator, driving them to work hard and create good content. However, this fear also causes internal turmoil and anxiety. They explore the idea of finding a healthier way of being and mention the importance of being kind to oneself. Ultimately, they conclude that while fear may not be the most enjoyable motivator, it is often necessary for them to produce their best work. The key takeaway is that achieving great things often requires sacrifices and facing fears, but it's equally important to prioritize mental well-being and find a balance.

    • Balancing Work and Personal Life for Happiness and FulfillmentFinding happiness and fulfillment in life involves surrounding oneself with fantastic people and experiences, seeking joy through various activities, creating memories with loved ones, and appreciating the small pleasures of life.

Finding happiness and fulfillment in life requires more than just focusing on work. Russell Howard emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with fantastic people and experiences outside of work to maintain a balanced and joyful life. He believes in seeking out dopamine hits of joy through activities like good food, travel, books, and music. Additionally, he highlights the significance of creating memories and cherishing social moments with loved ones. The pandemic has reminded people of the value of these experiences and has left many with a desire to find majesty in the universe. Ultimately, finding happiness means blending work and personal life, prioritizing joy, and appreciating the small pleasures that bring fulfillment.

    • Creating Memorable Live Shows and Managing Fear for Creative SuccessCrafting ambitious and finished productions, seeking help, and managing fear are crucial for creating engaging live shows and achieving success in creative pursuits. Quotes, conversation, and self-improvement are invaluable in this journey.

Audiences crave connection and a memorable experience. British crowds, in particular, yearn for a sense of engagement that was taken away from them. Both Russell Howard and Steven Bartlett emphasize the importance of creating a live show that goes beyond a simple Q&A session. They believe in crafting ambitious and finished productions that will rock and blow away the audience. Additionally, they discuss the significance of seeking help and using coping mechanisms to manage fear and anxiety, which can hinder one's potential. Russell Howard shares his experience with therapy and highlights the value of recognizing moments of mania and finding ways to calm down. Lastly, they express the value of quotes, conversation, and self-improvement in the pursuit of creative endeavors.

    • Exploring Different Creative Processes and Therapeutic PracticesDifferent artistic disciplines have unique approaches to creating their work, and practicing therapeutic techniques can enhance mental well-being and personal growth.

People have different creative processes and methods of managing themselves. Musicians and comedians have contrasting approaches to creating their art, with musicians often jamming and riffing in a cool room or studio, while comedians create in front of a live audience. Additionally, engaging in practices like neuro-linguistic techniques, cold showers, and breathing exercises can serve as a form of therapy or medicine for the mind. These activities may have psychosomatic effects, providing a sense of fulfillment and well-being. Moreover, podcasts and interviews can be a source of fascination and mental stimulation, allowing individuals to explore various interests and expand their understanding of different subjects.

    • Russell Howard's Pre-Performance Routine: Keep-Ups and Silly ConversationsRussell Howard eases pre-show jitters by juggling a football and engaging in lighthearted chats, emphasizing the significance of personal rituals and the support of family in overcoming challenges.

Russell Howard, a comedian, has a pre-performance routine that involves playing football with his team. This activity of doing keep-ups, or juggling the football, helps him feel more relaxed and prepared before going on stage. It has become somewhat of a superstition for him, as he believes that doing ten keep-ups is necessary to have a successful show. Additionally, Russell Howard finds comfort in chatting with his tour manager and brother, engaging in silly conversations and talking about random topics to loosen up. This conversation also highlights the importance of family and the impact of losing loved ones, as Russell Howard shares a touching memory of his beloved granddad.

    • Finding Strength in Family Love and PrideFamily love and support can help overcome obstacles and bring comfort in times of sadness. The passing of loved ones highlights the bond within a family and the unexpected humor that can lighten even the heaviest of situations.

Family love and pride can be a source of strength and comfort in the face of deep sadness. Russell Howard reflects on the mixed reviews he has received and the disbelief that he, coming from a family background where being on TV seemed impossible, could achieve success. He shares the profound love he felt from his grandparents and how their stories and support shaped him. The passing of his grandfather and later his grandmother brought immense grief, but also a realization of the excellence and bond within his family. Despite the sorrow, there were moments of unexpected humor that lightened the heaviness of the situation. The interconnectedness of their deaths suggests that their strong connection may have played a role.

    • Emotional Moments That Shaped ThemPersonal experiences can greatly influence one's perspective on relationships and emotions, leading to a unique way of navigating through life.

Both Russell Howard and Steven Bartlett have experienced significant emotional moments in their lives that have shaped them. Russell reflects on the loss of his grandparents and the impact it had on his family dynamics. He highlights the strange but memorable moments he shared with his grandma and the heartbreaking decline they experienced due to dementia. Steven, on the other hand, remembers seeing his dad emotionally vulnerable for the first time and the profound effect it had on him as a child. He also recounts the moment his dad revealed his true feelings about his marriage to his mom, causing him to question the stability of his family. These experiences have influenced their perspectives and the way they navigate relationships and emotions.

    • The Power of Laughter: Finding Relief and Satisfaction in HumorLaughter is a natural coping mechanism that brings relief and satisfaction, offering a temporary escape from life's challenges and allowing us to find humor in difficult situations.

Laughter is a powerful coping mechanism that provides respite from the trials and tribulations of life. Russell Howard expresses how making people laugh makes him feel good and acts as a socially accepted orgasm, offering a sense of satisfaction. Laughter is deeply human and soothes us, regardless of the difficulties we face. It lightens the load and temporarily transports us to a different realm where we are lost in the moment. For Russell, making people laugh is a way to take the sting out of pain by finding humor in it. Ultimately, laughter acts as a lubricant that makes life livable, providing a much-needed break from reality.

    • The Power of Storytelling: Uncovering the Pureness of Human Experiences.Seek out and share magnificent stories that have the ability to deeply touch and connect with others, as they have the potential to resonate on a profound level.

Storytelling has the power to deeply touch and connect with others. Russell Howard shares two contrasting stories - one about a lady making coffins and another about yowie hunting. Both stories evoke emotions and bring out the pureness of human experiences. Howard recognizes his ability as a communicator to make these stories relatable and impactful. He understands that such stories cannot be found in books but must be experienced firsthand. The conversation also highlights the unpredictable nature of storytelling, as unexpected events and encounters can lead to new and interesting narratives. Ultimately, the key takeaway is the importance of seeking out and sharing these magnificent stories that have the potential to resonate with people on a profound level.

    • Perspectives on Happiness and MindsetHappiness is a mood that can fluctuate, but proactive steps such as exercise and gratitude can help shift mindset. Finding fulfillment in work is important, even if it requires hard work and occasional loss of self.

Happiness is viewed by Russell Howard as more of a mood rather than a long-lasting state. He experiences more moments of happiness than sadness, but acknowledges that his mood can fluctuate and negative thoughts can get on top of him. While he has never been diagnosed with clinical depression, he takes proactive steps to shift his mindset, such as exercising. On the other hand, Steven Bartlett believes he is happy overall, despite his relentless ambition, through practicing gratitude and acknowledging his financial freedom. Both Russell Howard and Steven Bartlett emphasize the importance of finding fulfillment in the work they love, even if it means working hard and occasionally losing themselves in it.

    • Appreciating the Joy and Privilege of Pursuing PassionsFind moments of reflection and gratitude for the opportunities in life, share struggles with others, and treasure laughter as a powerful tool for happiness and connection.

It is important to appreciate the privilege and joy that comes with pursuing a hobby or a job that you love. Russell Howard emphasizes that even though there may be low moments and challenges, it is crucial to have moments of reflection and gratitude for the opportunities that others may long for. Discussing these struggles with friends, therapists, or through platforms like this conversation can help in finding those shimmering lights of hope and realizing the blessings in one's life. Additionally, Russell Howard's upcoming Netflix special, titled "Lubricant," is a love letter to laughter, emphasizing the significance of humor and silliness in our lives. It invites viewers to treasure laughter, viewing it as a musical instrument that anyone can play. Through slower and more thoughtful storytelling, Russell Howard aims to make his comedy more enjoyable for people watching from home.

    • The Power of Humor in Building Connections and Finding Common GroundLaughter is a universal language that has the ability to unite people and break barriers, creating genuine connections and fostering understanding among individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Humor is a powerful tool to bring people together and provide a release from the seriousness of the world. Russell Howard expresses his desire for his comedy to be deeply human and create a connection with his audience. He believes that exploring the weird and silly aspects of life can reveal the humor that is often overlooked. Both Russell and Stephen discuss how fake outrage and sensationalism sell, but they recognize the value of genuine, funny stories that can bridge divides and engage people from different backgrounds. They emphasize the importance of laughter as an essential part of our lives and how it can unite us in a deeply meaningful way.

The conversation ends with Steven Bartlett expressing his gratitude for Russell's comedic talent and his ability to uplift people during difficult times. This highlights the importance of comedians as national treasures who provide a service to the world by cheering people up. Overall, the key takeaway emphasizes Russell's excitement for his upcoming projects and the positive impact of comedy during challenging times.

Moment 165: This Exercise Enhances Mood, Memory & Concentration: David Raichlen

Moment 165: This Exercise Enhances Mood, Memory & Concentration: David Raichlen
In this moment, leading professor of evolutionary biology, David Raichlen discusses how to boost the brain benefits that come from exercise. Most people know that exercise can improve cognitive function, but don’t realise that different sort of exercise, like cardio or strength training, can provide different types of neurological benefits. David says that whilst all exercise is beneficial to the brain, research shows that the best sort of physical activity is a combination of physical and cognitive challenges. This helps the brain function as it copies how humans evolved to find food and survive. So this could mean that the next time you go for a run, choose the great outdoors over the treadmill and try different routes you haven’t taken before.
